My top gaming picks this Prime Day (live) - regular updates from a seasoned tech reviewer

Times are tough, every little helps. Here are the best deals we've found over at Amazon, Best Buy, Newegg, Walmart and more.

It's time to wade into the thick of it once again. Amazon is about to kick off its next major Prime event, Big Deal Days, running from October 6–7. Though that's not the only discount derby in town. We're expecting discounts on components, peripherals, monitors, chairs and more across all the major tech retailers.

I'll be personally curating the deals on this page. I've been testing hardware for about ten years now, and over that time I've covered many sales events just like this one. So, I know what to look for, and I also get it when people say, 'hey, that's not a deal, it was X% cheaper last year!' I know, I was there. Prices are high right now—it sucks—but that's all the more reason to try to save some money on the stuff you really need.

I've been writing and testing hardware for 10 years now, and for at least seven of those, I've covered a bunch of deals events. So, I know where to look and what to look for.

My personal Prime Day picks

No. 1
XFX RX 9070 GRE | 12 GB: $549.99 at Best Buy

The RX 9070 GRE is the only graphics card still surviving at MSRP. Sure, the MSRP is a bit higher than it should be, but it's nowhere near as inflated as pretty much every other graphics card on the planet. I'd love to see this sub-MSRP this October Prime Day, but I've just gone through our graphics card deals hub, and I'm just happy the GRE is still around at this price, to say the least.

Key specs: 3072 shaders | 2920 MHz boost | 12 GB GDDR6

RX 9070 GRE price check: Amazon $569.99 | Walmart $599.99 | Newegg $569.99

No. 2
Save $2,200
HP Omen 35L | RTX 5080 | 9800X3D: was $4,999.99 now $2,799.99 at HP US

I wish I could take the credit for finding this one, as it's genuinely a mega deal by today's standards. It's about a thousand bucks more than the cost of an RTX 5080 alone, yet comes with around $1,500 bucks of other expensive stuff, like a 2 TB SSD and 32 GB of RAM.

Key specs: Ryzen 7 9800X3D | RTX 5080 | 32 GB DDR5-6000 | 2 TB SSD

No. 3
Save $75
MSI MPG A1000GS PCIE5 II: was $169.99 now $94.99 at Newegg

I am quite partial to a power supply. They feel good to hold but more importantly they ensure good functioning of a gaming PC. This MSI one has been reviewed by someone we've trusted with our own power supply reviews in the past, Aris from Cybenetics, who called it a "good PSU". It's only built for Nvidia GPUs, as it has just three shared 8-pin CPU/GPU connectors. Use code FTTF7873 for the full discount.

Key specs: 1000 W | 80+ Gold | 2x 12V-2x6 | 10-year warranty

Save $200 G27G41ZDF

AOC G27G41ZDF

The cheapest OLED gaming monitor I'd recommend right now: you're getting a fast response time, high refresh rate, and everything else you expect from a modern OLED panel. Key specs: 27-inch | 1440p | 240 Hz | 0.03 ms | QD-OLED

Save $2200 Omen 35L | RTX 5080 | 9800X3D

HP Omen 35L | RTX 5080 | 9800X3D

I didn't expect to see an RTX 5080 alongside a Ryzen 7 9800X3D for this kind of price again, given the state of the current market. But here we are, and I'm certainly not complaining. There's no slack in the other specs, either, given you're getting 2 TB of storage and a full 32 GB of fast DDR5 memory. Key specs: Ryzen 7 9800X3D | RTX 5080 | 32 GB DDR5-6000 | 2 TB SSD

Save $30 Scape | 40 mm drivers | 40-hour battery life

Fractal Design Scape | 40 mm drivers | 40-hour battery life

With a magnetic charging stand, a comfortable fit, and lush sound, the Fractal Design Scape earns its hefty MSRP. It's let down a little by a lack of noise cancelling and an average microphone, but it's a gorgeous set of cans. Oh, and pretty much the most convenient headset I've ever used. There's that, too. Key specs: 40 mm drivers | 20 - 20,000 Hz | Closed-back | Wireless | 40-hour battery life

Save $30 Pro Click V2 Vertical

Razer Pro Click V2 Vertical

With a high DPI, RGB lighting, 2.4 GHz connectivity, and USB Type-C charging, you're not missing out on much by opting for this vertical mouse. It's just better on the joints, is all. Key specs: Wireless | Type-C charging | Up to 30K DPI | RGB lighting

Save $176 LOQ | RTX 5050 (100 W) | 16 GB DDR5

Lenovo LOQ | RTX 5050 (100 W) | 16 GB DDR5

Ordinarily, an RTX 5050 gaming laptop for nearly $1,000 wouldn't be particularly special. However, this one has a 100 W GPU power limit, which means it should be reasonably punchy when paired with a 1080p display. It's a shame the RAM is limited to a single module, but in terms of gaming performance the lack of dual channel shouldn't affect it much, as we found when we reviewed an RTX 5060 model late last year. Key specs: RTX 5050 (100 W) | Core i5 13450HX | 15-inch | 1080p | 144 Hz | 16 GB DDR5 | 512 GB

Save $480 Nitro V 16 | RTX 5060 (75 W) | 16 GB DDR5

Acer Nitro V 16 | RTX 5060 (75 W) | 16 GB DDR5

If you're shopping for a gaming laptop anywhere near the $1,000 mark, SSD sizes can unfortunately suffer. This Acer lappy has a 512 GB model, which is pretty small, and the GPU's 75 W power limit is a touch low. However, it's still the cheapest (good) RTX 5060 gaming laptop I can find, and it should perform well with its 1200p, 165 Hz screen. The HP below is worth a look—but if you're pinching the pennies I still think this is a good price for this particular machine. Key specs: RTX 5060 (75 W) | Core 7 240H | 16-inch | 1200p | 165 Hz | 16 GB DDR5 | 512 GB SSD

First day on the blog.

Jacob here. I've done a few too many of these sales events at this point. Moreover, I've tested a whole lot of hardware over my many years in this job. So, hey, hopefully I can pick out something you like.

This year's second Prime Day (Big Deal Days or whatever) doesn't kick off until tomorrow, October 6; however, every other major tech retailer has already gone live with their respective deals. So, without further ado.
