I've started ripping CDs with this disc drive and if you also find it weird we don't own things anymore then it's currently on sale for Prime Day

PeroBuno External CD/DVD drive: was $19.99 now $16.99 at Amazon

A compact and convenient CD/DVD drive. What more do you need to kickstart your data hoarding? It'll write discs, too, and it comes with a cable built-in for Type-C and Type-A connectivity.

Key specs: CD/DVD | USB 3.0 | Built-in cable | Type-A/C

I stopped ripping CDs around the early 2010s. I started again in 2026. Whether down to the current state of the world or just my quest for greater ownership of my data, it feels like the right thing to do. A weird new hobby to adopt nowadays, sure, but if my internet dies for a day, I still have my favorite albums—I'm not totally dependent on streaming services.

To start your own media hoarding journey, you'll need a disc drive. Right now, you can grab the exact same PeroBuno one I have for $16, with a 19% saving. It's much like any other disc drive, however, and there's also this one from Suidek for $25 with extra USB ports.

If you want to go one further, there's a version for $37 with a SATA SSD slot. Yeah, you can plug a whole SATA SSD into it for some added cold storage or backups. Or for $40, one with an NVMe slot. Just select those from the options on the page with the link above.

This is more than a disc drive. It includes an M.2 slot, loads of USB ports, SD card slot, and a couple cables.

Key specs: CD/DVD | Dock | 10 Gbps | M.2 slot

Though, to be honest, I'm happy with just a solitary disc drive. Depends on what you're planning to hoard. If you're looking at keeping copies of your CDs or DVDs, the PeroBuno will do just fine. It doesn't take up too much space in a drawer, either.

This drive comes with a 2-in-1 USB cable: Type-A and Type-C. It's only rated to 5 Gbps, but that's more than quick enough for this sorta work. The drive will also write to discs as well if you need to make a replacement for a dodgy disc.

According to Amazon, the PeroBuno disc drive is at its lowest price in 30 days. The Suidek options are also low for the past 30 days, according to the site's own price tracker. So I think whichever you go for, you're saving a nice bit of cash.
