Borderlands 3 PC is releasing exclusively on the Epic Store in September

Borderlands 3 will release September 13 on the Epic Games Store, which will be the only place to buy it on PC until April 2020. After that six month exclusivity period, it'll release "on additional PC digital storefronts," according to a press release from 2K.

“Our mission, in addition to delivering the most engaging and captivating entertainment experiences, is to embrace new distribution platforms that will contribute to our effort to grow the audience for Borderlands 3," said 2K President David Ismailer via the press release.

Ismailer didn't elaborate on how the Epic Store will grow the Borderlands audience, but Epic provided some relevant numbers back at GDC, where it announced that the store has accrued 85 million registered users. 40 percent of those users don't have Steam installed, according to Epic's surveying (which surprised me until I thought about how Fortnite was one of my nephew's first games).

PC gamers aren't a monolithic group, and this move by 2K (and by extension Take-Two) signals a lot of confidence that Epic can cater to a healthy segment of players.

2K/Take Two has exclusive publishing rights for Borderlands 3 and makes all decisions regarding price-points, territories, distribution and platform partnerships.

Randy Pitchford

Epic Store exclusivity was rumored earlier this week, which Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford had a few things to say about.

"2K/Take Two has exclusive publishing rights for Borderlands 3 and makes all decisions regarding price-points, territories, distribution and platform partnerships," he tweeted. "Please direct all inquiries regarding any of those topics to 2K."

Pitchford followed up by saying that, to him, "exclusives are fine when they come w/ advantages and when they are short—say, six months." (Hint, hint.)

He also expressed appreciation for "Epic’s leadership with cross platform support."

Steam loyalists may want to look away, but for everyone else, Gearbox will be livestreaming an "extended gameplay reveal" on May 1. There's a new gameplay trailer above, too, and head over here for details on Borderlands 3's four editions.
