CD Projekt Red showed up to close out Gamescom Opening Night Live with two big announcements: a first look at The Witcher 3's final expansion, Songs of the Past, and a surprise "Remastered" patch coming to the base game on September 29.

If you're just hearing about this now, yes, The Witcher 3 is getting a big expansion 12 years after its release, though we got no firm release date today. To hold us over, we caught a glimpse of the new region that Geralt will explore, Letten, and a weapon type new to the games: the chain whip.

I was wondering if CDPR would ever let the White Wolf wield his favorite weapon from the books. What a nice surprise.

It'd take a bigger Witcher nerd than I to glean much from the trailer story-wise, but I'm willing to bet Geralt has been contracted to kill a thorny, druidical monster. The YouTube description for the trailer says a bit more:

"This full-fledged third expansion takes the White Wolf on a new adventure to the peaceful realm of Letten, where dark secrets lurk beneath the surface."

Songs of the Past, sadly, has no imminent release date. It's out "next year," according to the trailer.
