Both reporting on and reading about the raging memory supply crisis has meant a procession of bad news. So when someone actually has a win to share, I'll gladly take it. Case in point, purveyor of modular laptops Framework is actually lowering the price of some of its memory products.
"We have a positive update today on LPCAMM2 pricing!" The company wrote on X, "We were able to source a limited quantity at lower cost, and are retroactively reducing prices for orders that shipped at higher price, as well as offering the lower price to orders through Batch 10."
In a blog post, Framework explains that it's been able to secure a limited supply of Micron 32 GB and 64 GB LPCAMM2 memory modules at a lower cost than before.
The company adds, "We are committed to passing on savings whenever we can and keeping computers as accessible as possible in the current environment, so we are rolling out price reductions across both already shipped and a subset of currently pending pre-orders."
These modules were previously the subject of bad news back in July, when Framework shared that its supplier's memory prices were 'more than double' its previous shipment. Framework admits that the pricing of this latest, lower-cost batch of memory is still "above our original pre-order launch baseline," but that "they are lower than the last cost update that drove our current pricing for new pre-orders."
If you were eyeing an upgrade for your own Framework Laptop 13 Pro, now is the time to scoop one as the lower price stock likely won't last. Framework wrote in a follow up post on X, "We have a limited quantity available, so are offering this first-come, first-serve to customers through Batch 10. If we're able to source additional quantities or have remaining inventory, we'll open it to later batches and then to new pre-orders."
Similarly, if you'd just placed an order, Framework should've automatically refunded you the cost difference—even if it's already shipped. What's more notable is that folks who have already received their DIY Edition Framework 13 Pro can reach out via this contact form if they'd like to switch to a 32 GB or 64 GB memory module at the new reduced price.
Framework appears to be going out of its way to pass on the benefits of this cost-reduced stock. It doesn't feel all that dissimilar to the tariff refund situation with Panic, where those who bought the company's Playdate handheld at a higher price due to US tariffs received a refund. To paraphrase Panic co-founder Cabel Sasser, perhaps Framework also feels that any savings it makes on this latest LPCAMM2 memory shipment is just not its money to keep.
