Lost Planet 3 has man in robot suit fighting giant ice crab, here’s Dave with the weather
The lost planet was found a few years ago when the first game came out, and since then armies of futuristic marines have been wishing the damn place had stayed lost, on account of the giant horrible bug monsters and the awful cold. In the newly announced prequel, Lost Planet 3, humanity’s solution to both problems takes the form of well heated giant robots with great big drill hands. Bravo, humanity.
The debut trailer for Lost Planet 3 shows a day in the life of Manly Beard Man (Jim), a man with a beard who doesn’t sit down for breakfast without having first climbed into a giant robot suit to fight an ice crab. Lost Planet’s massive boss monsters famously sported huge glowing weak spots, but that’s all a bit moot when you can punch through the thing with a giant drill arm. See more of those monsters and some icy vistas in the new screenshots below.
See World of Warcraft with infinite draw distance
Spotted on the r/wow subreddit, user lurker_becomes_lurkd dialed up the draw distance in World of Warcraft to capture 231 high-altitude images. The jigsawed landscapes give some mild insight into the smoke and mirrors act level designers and artists perform in creating game worlds that have to occupy thousands. View the gallery here on Imgur.
If you’d like to try it yourself, these steps seem to be the player’s method for cranking up draw distance and eliminating fog.
Game of Thrones RPG screenshots tour Kingslanding
The second season of HBO’s sumptuous TV retelling of George R. R. Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire series is well and truly underway. Shots of Tyrion strolling the halls of power whistling nonchalantly have been topped only by Joffrey’s latest slapping at the hands of his mother, the power hungry queen Cersei, and the sight of those grand halls is only making me more eager to explore them.
Cyanide’s Game of Thrones RPG should let us do just that. The great city of Kingslanding will be one of the locations we’ll get to explore, but will it capture the hustle and bustle of the city’s streets, or the silent scheming of the library-quiet halls of that grand palace? By The Seven, I hope so. It would be such a shame to see such a great license go to waste. Here are some new screenshots, showing the streets of Kingslanding, and some suitably ostentatious Lannister armour.
PAX East: Dungeons & Dragons Online weaves a tale of expansion
With a huge, intricate spider web hanging down from the rafters of the Boston Convention Center, the Dungeons and Dragons Online booth is overshadowed by the evil presence of Lolth, the main villain for the upcoming Menace of the Underdark expansion, hanging overhead. The spider queen’s presence lends an air of, well, menace to my time with Executive Producer Fernando Paiz and Senior Producer Eric Boyer as we take an extensive look through what Menace of Underdark will offer players, as well as a quick look at the Druid class and some of its abilities.
Survive a Nuclear Blast in City of Heroes’ next Incarnate Trial, The Magisterium
In most MMORPGs, your beefy max-level character can take on some monstrous enemies and withstand a serious beating—but have you ever survived a nuclear blast? City of Heroes is giving players the opportunity to test their staying power against atomic explosions in an epic finale against Tyrant—the main antagonist of the Going Rogue expansion—in the upcoming Incarnate Trial, The Magisterium.
Exclusive reveal: Neverwinter’s CG PAX teaser trailer and screenshots
Cryptic’s upcoming Neverwinter game has undergone a lot of changes. Originally announced in 2010 as a small-scale co-op RPG, the game’s been blown out to a full-scale MMO and, from these first glimpses at the new product, it looks beautiful. The game’s playable on the PAX East show floor this weekend, so stop by if you’re attending. If not, don’t fret: we’ll give you our hands-on impressions of the game tomorrow. In the meantime, get excited with this quickie CG teaser and nine dragon-rific screenshots, and check out the official site for more info.
Storming into Hell (again) in The Secret World
![]()
A couple months ago, I talked about my hands-on time with The Secret World and its hit-and-miss Illuminati starting area, the frustrating-yet-awesome open-world Egypt zone, its Minecraft-like crafting system, and the brilliant character customization system. But today, we’re getting into the really good stuff: the no-frills, fast-paced dungeons.
First up, we step through “The 13th Gate” and go straight to Hell. That’s right, the burning lake of fire where demons use liars for chew toys.
Aliens: Colonial Marines screenshots show huggy aliens, big guns and abandoned ships
Aliens’ Xenomorphs are perhaps the least huggable creatures in the galaxy, which is sad, because they’re desperate to hug you TO DEATH. James Cameron’s Aliens teaches us that the it’s possible to dissuade unwanted alien hugs using bullets and, occasionally, big yellow bipedal loaders. You can expect to be doing lots of vigorous dissuading in Aliens: Colonial Marines, Gearbox’ upcoming co-op shooter, due out later this year.
These latest screenshots show a few close and personal faceoffs with some of Giger’s ugliest creations, a giant cannon turret with which you’ll be able to destroy Giger’s ugliest creations, and a gloomy spaceship interior full of cracks and dark corners, perfect for hiding dozens of hungry aliens.
Shogun 2: Fall of the Samurai screenshots show moustaches, swordsmen and sunsets
The standalone expansion to Total War: Shogun 2, Fall of the Samurai, is out, and it’s a very handsome game, as these launch screenshots demonstrate. Of course, most of the time you’ll be floating high above the battlefield, surveying the landscape and dishing out orders to vast armies, but if you take a moment every now and then to zoom down to ground level, you’ll get to see every cut and thrust. Thanks to the influx of guns, Fall of the Samurai’s battles are much smokier, noisier places.
If you’re wandering whether or not to pick up the expansion today, check out our Fall of the Samurai review. If you’ve already taken the plunge, have a look at our guide to taking Japan. If you want to see men with huge moustaches being rushed by a unit of samurai swordsmen, check out these screenshots.
Max Payne 3 PC will have DirectX 11 support, new PC screenshots arrive
Tessellation is a fancy expression for a DirectX 11 technique that divides up the surfaces created by polygons, resulting in more rounded, detailed characters and craggier faces. If anyone needs a bit of facial Tesselation, it’s Max Payne. Luckily, he’ll be getting that much-needed beauty treatment in Max Payne 3. DSO gaming have spotted an interview on German site, PC Games Hardware in which Rockstar PR chief, Simon Ramsey, confirms that the PC version will come with DirectX 11 support.
Assassin’s Creed 3 screenshots chop up redcoats, hide in trees, pose on rooftops
Six new Assassin’s Creed 3 screenshots have appeared on Evil Avatar. They’re full of magnificent red coats . Assassin’s Creed 3 takes place in a time when camouflage was considered cowardly, though the new assassin, Conner, hasn’t quite grasped the concept either. The bright white cowl has become synonymous with Assassin’s Creed, though, and Conner may as well be wearing a clown costume for all it matters. Like the best videogame goons, Assassin’s Creed’s soldiers never look up.
Dishonored screenshots delve into Dunwall’s seedy underworld
A new batch of sinister Dishonored screenshots have arrived. It looks as though the shooter’s open levels will have a few seedy nooks and crannies tucked away behind those grand facades. Many of the pictures are high res versions of some of the shots Arkane showed in the recent Dishonored developer diary. They show some of Dunwall’s less reputable establishments, a bit of rooftop combat, and a man being disintegrated by a pair of tesla coils. He does not look happy.
The Secret World Dragon preview
It’s the morning after the GDC earthquake (only 4 or 5 on the Richter scale, but enough to make your correspondent feel like he was about to be thrown out of the bedroom window) and the Funcom crew are having trouble getting their demo kit working. A major power surge ten minutes before we arrived fried half their room, and Ragnar (Torquist, Creative Director) and Joel (Bylos, Lead Content Designer) perform a double-act as cables fly in a back-room. It seems unknown chaotic forces are attempting to prevent them showing us the Dragon introduction to the Secret World, complete with character creation, soul, achievements, lore, and crafting. We suggest they act out the introduction instead. They look at each other, before Joel glances away, muttering; “you really don’t want us to do that.”
The following day, we come back, to find out why. The set-up seems to be working now and the interfering forces (possibly the gods of Chaos, possibly the Lego Batman 2 demo team in the hotel room below) seem to have been temporarily thwarted. The Dragon demo starts running.
Mists of Pandaria: Everything you need to know
Blizzard released a lot of new info about World of Warcraft’s next expansion today. But does it all mean? We walk you through all the changes, tell you what we think of them from our hands-on time with Mists of Pandaria, and break down what they mean for every aspect of the game: from questing to casual gameplay to release date.
The Secret World takes Minecraft’s crafting system and makes it better
Smash Cthulhu with hammer. Loot gun. Break hammer and gun down into raw materials. Rearrange materials to construct new super-powered hammer. Smash reanimating Cthulhu. Rinse, repeat until Cthulhu stops moving.
The Secret World‘s crafting system is immediately familiar to any of the millions of people that’ve spent time inside the blocky wonderland of Minecraft. In both games, you place raw materials into a small grid to craft new items. The item produced is determined by the arrangement and quality of the materials you put in. It’s simple, it’s fun, and Funcom’s added a lot of additional aspects to the system that makes it more engaging and flexible. Here’s the full run-down.
