Zach Cregger's take on survival horror in his recent Resident Evil film has gone down pretty well—ask just about anyone here at PC Gamer and they'll tell you how much they loved the interpretation. But it's not just done well critically, Resident Evil is also raking in the cash.
Cregger's Resident Evil earned $23 million across the US and Canada in its second week (via Fangoria), second only to the re-release of Avengers: Endgame, which has returned to theaters in the lead up to Avengers: Doomsday. But Resident Evil did manage to beat out Brad Pitt's The Heart of the Beast and the Chris Hansen biopic Primetime, a pretty impressive achievement.
$23 million may not sound like a lot, especially when you chalk it up against the whopping $75 million Sony Pictures spent making the film, so it's a good thing that Resident Evil has made way more money overall. Looking at The Numbers, Cregger's Resident Evil is already the third most lucrative movie in the Resident Evil film franchise, with $60 million earned in its opening weekend, $103 million in total domestic box office, and an impressive $197 million in the worldwide box office.
Interestingly, Cregger's Resident Evil is easily the top domestic box office Resident Evil film ever, with Paul W. S. Anderson's Resident Evil: Afterlife taking second place, and Resident Evil: Degeneration and Extinction vying for third place.
But the worldwide box office tells a different story. Here, Cregger's Resident Evil remains in fourth place, behind Resident Evil: The Final Chapter's $314 million, as well as Resident Evil: Afterlife and Resident Evil: Retribution.
The overall standings for top five grossing Resident Evil films—so far—are as follows:

Cregger's Resident Evil still has some ground to make up but with it only being out for a couple of weeks now I'm pretty confident in its ability to rise above the rest.
