High-end gaming laptops have a fairly obvious problem: the more performance you squeeze in, the harder it gets to keep the machine slim, cool and actually pleasant to use day to day.

Being both powerful and portable isn't an impossible task, but it takes some serious engineering to make it happen, and the boffins behind the Aorus Master 16 Gen 2 are up to the challenge.

The Aorus Master 16 Gen 2 is a 16-inch gaming laptop built around some very high-performance parts, including AMD’s Ryzen 9 9955HX3D processor and up to an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 Laptop GPU.

That gives it the kind of hardware you’d expect from a desktop-replacement laptop, but Gigabyte has squeezed it into a much thinner design.

It’s not all about raw power, either. There’s a new HDR1000 OLED display for games that benefit from deep contrast and high brightness, Windforce Infinity EX Cooling with up to 230W of thermal capacity, and Gigabyte’s GiMATE software for more personalised performance control.

There’s also a launch bundle valued at over AU$900 available from AFTERSHOCK PC for eligible buyers, which makes it that bit more compelling if you’re already looking at a serious gaming laptop upgrade.

High-end parts in a slimmer 16-inch laptop

The processor is where the Aorus Master 16 Gen 2 starts to separate itself from a lot of other gaming laptops. AMD’s Ryzen 9 9955HX3D is one of the more gaming-focused CPUs you can put in a laptop right now, with 16 cores, 32 threads and AMD’s 3D V-Cache technology.

That 3D V-Cache is especially important, as it gives the processor a larger pool of fast on-chip cache to work with, helping the GPU hit higher frame rates in games that rely heavily on the CPU. It’s also great at handling other demanding tasks like streaming, editing or 3D modelling when you’re not gaming.

The video card options are just as premium and the Aorus Master 16 Gen 2 is available with up to an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 laptop GPU with 24GB of GDDR7 memory. It can also use up to 175W Maximum Graphics Power with Dynamic Boost, giving the RTX 5090 the same headroom in a slim 16-inch machine that you’d normally only get from a much chunkier model.

That’s the kind of graphics chops needed if you want to handle newer games at high settings, get some extra help from Nvidia DLSS 4 for smoother gameplay, or use ray tracing without immediately shedding a tear and dialling back the settings.

Cooling that can keep up

All this powerful hardware only works if the laptop can manage the heat. A thin 16-inch chassis with a Ryzen 9 X3D chip and up to an RTX 5090 Laptop GPU sounds great on paper, but no one wants that performance disappearing after ten minutes because the cooling system can’t keep up.

That’s where Gigabyte’s Windforce Infinity EX Cooling comes in. It’s rated for up to 230W of thermal capacity, which gives the CPU and GPU room to run at higher power levels without the laptop needing to turn into a full suitcase.

The design uses dual Frost Fan 2.0 fans, a large vapour chamber, four exhaust outlets and double-sided air inlets to move heat away from the core components.

That all might sound a bit like marketing speak, but we've had hands-on time with the Master 16 Gen 2. The cooling is excellent and keeps the hardware running flat out without undue throttling.

Of course, it’s also quite noisy under load, but hey, that’s not the worst trade-off and is something a pair of gaming headphones can fix.

It’s not purely about keeping the CPU and GPU from catching fire either. Gigabyte’s 3D VortX air-channelling is designed to guide hot air away from the chassis, while the WASD cool zone helps keep your fingers from getting toasty.

An OLED screen built for fast, bright games

Before you even start thinking about frame rates and GPU wattage, you’ll be staring at the display. The Aorus Master 16 Gen 2 uses a new 16-inch OLED panel with a 2560 x 1600 resolution, 16:10 aspect ratio and 240Hz refresh rate, so it’s sharp, fast and gives you a little more vertical space than a standard 16:9 screen.

The HDR1000 OLED spec is the big upgrade here. You get the proper black levels and contrast OLED is known for, with enough brightness to make HDR games pop rather than look washed out.

It also has the colour credentials for more than just games, with 100% DCI-P3 coverage, Pantone Validation and Dolby Vision support for creative work and video.

Practical control and everyday ports

Gigabyte also gives you deeper control over how that performance is used through GiMATE, its software for tuning the system without digging through a mess of separate settings.

For gamers, the key feature is Customized Mode, which lets you adjust the GPU for better game performance when you need more out of the hardware. Or you can let the system intelligently handle the adjustments for you.

Now, a high-end gaming laptop still needs to work as an actual laptop day to day, not just a portable room heater. The Aorus Master 16 Gen 2 includes Wi-Fi 7, plus a decent spread of ports, including 1G LAN, HDMI 2.1, USB4, USB-C (with DisplayPort and power delivery), two USB-A ports, a microSD slot and a 3.5mm audio jack.

There’s also support for up to 64GB of DDR5 memory and PCIe Gen5 storage, so there’s room for bigger game libraries, creative projects and heavier multitasking.
