With a scorching summer leaving a trail of melted tarmac and parched lawns in our rear view mirrors, we've all probably had enough of, haven't we? It's time to start getting snug in the face of cooling weather, and two classic ways of doing that are study and gaming; low lights, hot beverages, maybe a cat within arm's reach—it's a whole vibe.

Going back to school or uni also means exchanging stories with classmates on your summer gaming exploits, getting hyped about upcoming releases you can play together between classes, and maybe getting a laptop that will function as both a study aide and gaming companion.

Thanks to Nvidia and its range of GeForce powered laptops, gone are the days of relying on an underpowered Chromebook for your studies, then firing up a desktop when it's time to hunker down for some gaming. Here are five laptops for different budgets and needs, all powered by Nvidia's latest GeForce RTX 50 Series Laptop GPUs, that can see you through the school year and beyond.

Lenovo LOQ R7 – The affordable all-rounder

Lenovo kicks our list off with a modest 1080p resolution on the LOQ R7, and with the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5050 dedicated GPU inside, you're more likely to see the frame rates reach that plentiful 144Hz refresh rate on this workhorse.

Thanks to the RTX hardware inside this system, you can switch on DLSS 4.5 with multi-frame generation, letting you max out the frame rate on that display in games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, and enjoy Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p with Ultra settings (with some lovely ray-tracing ensuring that Night City's neon lights really reflect off those glossy puddles). With a 1TB SSD, you won't be running short on space any time soon either.

The 16GB RAM and Ryzen 7 CPU give the R7 enough firepower for hands-on tasks like coding, video editing, and CAD. The GPU power is capped at 65W, so for heavier-duty gaming and tasks like 3D editing, you may want to keep scrolling…

ASUS V16 – Gaming power in a svelte package

The Asus V16 jumps onto the 16:10 aspect ratio bandwagon, offering that little bit more vertical space for scrolling through documents, code editors, spreadsheets, and other studious activities that you'll be using this for (after recovering from sugar-fuelled late-night gaming sessions, that is).

The V16 has the same RTX 5050 GPU and 16GB DDR 5 RAM as the LOQ R7, so expect similar gaming performance, with Nvidia Reflex on hand for both to give players the edge in competitive online shooters. DLSS 4.5 with multi-frame generation will work their magic to unlock framerates that wouldn't have been imaginable on a laptop of this spec.

One thing to note for art, photography, or design students is that this display has a 45% NTSC colour gamut, which isn't super-poppy, so an external display is recommended for colour-sensitive work. On the other hand, the V16 is the lightest and slimmest laptop on this list, so it's great for travelling with you between classes and the gaming station.

MSI Cyborg 15 – A step up for gaming and creative work

Progressing to the next level in graphical fidelity, the Cyborg 15 comes with an RTX 5060, which is the next step up from the RTX 5050. At 1080p and with all the DLSS bells and whistles, the frame rate could comfortably max out the 144Hz display (so 144 frames per second) in games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Hogwarts Legacy. Power is capped at 55W in this one, which is great for thermals and battery efficiency but be aware that it may restrict the frame rate a tad.

That said, the RTX 5060's CUDA acceleration - which shares the load typically designated for the CPU with the GPU - still makes the Cyborg capable of working with things like Blender, video editing, computer science, and introductory AI or data-science work.

For its spec, the Cyborg 15 comes in quite lightweight at 2.1kg. There's plenty of space on the 1TB NVMe SSD for games and work projects, while the 10-core Intel Core 7 CPU will handle most workloads the typical student is likely to throw at it.

HP Omen 16 – A heavyweight work-and-play machine

16in 2560x1600 240Hz display | RTX 5060 Laptop GPU | AMD Ryzen AI 7 350 | 24GB DDR5 RAM | 1TB SSD

If you can handle a bit more bulk for a bit more horsepower, and don't mind your laptop spending more time on the desk than in your actual lap, then the Omen 16 is a serious contender. Powered by 24GB RAM and an octa-core Ryzen AI 7-series CPU, it's a good fit for students working with 3D design, engineering, video editing, and data science. Art and photography students will appreciate the IPS display's 100% sRGB coverage, which means strong colour reproduction in the standard sRGB gamut.

Those colours will also look lovely when gaming, which should be a smooth experience with the RTX 5060 GPU. Using DLSS 4.5 with multi-frame generation, that equates to about 168fps for Modern Warfare 3 and 128fps in the infamously demanding Black Myth: Wukong, while you'll be maxing out that 240Hz refresh rate with games on the graphical level of Marvel Rivals.

The display is 1600p too, so if you're happy to sacrifice a few frames for some visual crispness, then you can crank up the resolution (though if you ask us it's worth saving a higher resolution for when you connect this beast up to a bigger display).

Acer Nitro V 16 AI – for blockbuster games and serious study

At the top end of today's selection is this powerhouse, packing an RTX 5070 GPU that can exceed 200fps at 1080p on Ultra settings in DOOM: The Dark Ages (and, by extension, plenty of other games). Naturally, this is with the help of Nvidia's nigh-magical DLSS and multi-frame generation technologies.

But this laptop doesn't overlook the day job for the students either. With 32GB RAM and the Ryzen AI 9 365 CPU, there's plenty of headroom for tasks like Blender rendering, 4K video editing, game development, engineering, machine learning, and data analysis. Nvidia specifically highlights RTX acceleration as benefiting tasks like 3D modelling too. With a 16:10 LED display, the Nitro V makes it that little bit easier to trawl through documents, data, and in-depth reading.

If you'll accept no compromise in the gaming arena, and your studies demand more of your PC's resources than most other students would require, then this is the most future-ready of the five laptops here, ready to guide you through your degree and years of triple-A gaming.

If you want a sidekick that'll shoot you to the top of the leaderboards in the classroom by day and in your favourite FPS by night, or one that'll help you build code for your studies and sprawling cities in your games, one of the above offerings has got your back. Head over to Nvidia's Back to School page for even more laptop options, and learn about how Nvidia's hardware can help students on their journey.
