I've said it before, and I'll say it again: I love wireless gaming headsets, but I don't love how often they have to become wired in order to charge. As such, I was pretty stoked to try out the Glorious GHS InfinitePlay and its hot-swappable battery system earlier this month. Unfortunately, even with 80 hours per battery pack, it didn't quite impress enough to make it onto our best gaming headsets guide. Besides, you know what's better than 80 hours of battery life? 300.
In her review, our Hope wrote the HyperX Cloud Alpha Wireless has a "battery life that can only be described as witchcraft." It's certainly none too shabby in many other regards, but an up to 300-hour battery life makes this still the longest-lasting gaming headset we've ever tested. Besides the beefiest battery, you're also getting an excellent music listening and gaming audio experience for the cash too. 50 mm drivers deliver clear, crisp sound, and the headset's directional sound capabilities bring gameplay to a whole new level.
"When playing games the directional sound is also very nice. I was able to easily locate hidden batteries by directional beeps in Deep Rock Galactic, and had a wonderful time bouncing along to the tight beats of Shadow Warrior 3." Hope writes, "I loaded up some Doom Eternal and promptly terrified myself. If you've ever wanted to know what it sounds like having a Cacodemon suddenly show up and whisper sweet blah-things into very specifically your left ear then these can absolutely deliver."
She goes on to add, "A+, would have my soul leave my body again." I don't know about you, but that certainly sells the headset's directional sound to me. Add to that exceedingly cushy ear cushions, and 'immersive' almost feels like a bit of an understatement.
The main let-down with this wireless headset is the microphone, which Hope describes as simply not "up to par with the rest of the headset." Still, her microphone test turns in perfectly legible sound, if not a bit sibilant and 'hissy'.
On top of that, even though the microphone is removable, Hope notes, "There's no hiding the gamer cred with these bad boys on your head." If you're looking for a versatile set of cans you could take into the office, then you may want to look elsewhere. Furthermore, the HyperX Cloud Alpha Wireless lacks both Bluetooth connectivity and noise cancelling, meaning it's hardly ideal for a crowded bus either. Otherwise, as a wireless headset dedicated to capital-G-gaming, the HyperX Cloud Alpha Wireless ticks all the boxes.
