I'm always on the lookout for the next great survival game, and Hello Sunshine, which revealed a new story trailer on the PC Gaming Show Tokyo Direct this weekend, firmly grabbed my attention. With a huge robot companion, you scavenge a sun-scorched world, craft gear, and upgrade your robot buddy. Here's a few reasons it looks robo-tastic.
Giant robot, do I need to say more?
I mean, it's got a giant robot in it! And it picks you up and you can stand on its hand. That's just cool. I don't even need to explain it further.
Robot keeps you cool
During the day, you walk in the shade of your giant robot pal, which protects you from the dangers of the burning sun.
Robot warms you up
At night, your robot's heat will keep you warm in the freezing darkness, giving you a reason to stay close.
Stålenhag vibes
I'm a huge fan of Simon Stålenhag's graphic novels, and the post-apocalyptic setting and massive robots give off huge Stålenhag vibes without feeling completely derivative.
It's got an ending
Typically I don't finish survival games, I just eventually stop playing them. Here, you're driven by a goal, to follow your robot to the end of the road, so there's a proper ending, which is rare for the survival genre.
Make friends with the robot
You'll get to know your 'bot. As you progress and upgrade your companion, you'll unlock new ways to communicate. I want to be friends with a giant robot, don't you?
Corporate takedown
You play the final employee of the mega corporation that ruined the world. A bit of social commentary is always welcome, especially considering... *waves hand at the state of the real world*

You can register for a playtest on Steam now, so maybe you'll get a chance to play a bit of Hello Sunshine before it's out. I'll cross my fingers for you.
Big robot punches
Your robot will kick other robot's asses. Part of your companions' abilities are "shielding you from threats, fighting back against hostile war machines." Hell, yeah.
