At long last, fishing will finally come to RuneScape: Dragonwilds tomorrow, so I'll wave goodbye to my other skills now

RuneScape doesn't feel like RuneScape without the ability to spend hours of your life fishing. In fact, levelling that essential skill is a quintessential part of the experience, so when RuneScape: Dragonwilds released with no fishing element—I can't lie—I was incredibly disappointed. Fortunately, we don't have much longer to wait, and it has been revealed that fishing will come to Ashenfall on April 21.
A trailer shared to the official Dragonwilds YouTube channel shows what to expect from the skill, as well as featuring a pretty jolly remix of Sea Shanty 2 in the background, and it's exactly what I had hoped for. I mean, there are only so many ways you can really imagine fishing in a survival game, but it still ticks those boxes. You and your friends will be able to gather around ponds and pools across the world, cast your line, and spend all your waking moments fishing—as Jagex always intended. What more could you want?
Except it's not just about fishing with a rod. Judging by the trailer, it looks like you'll be able to fish with a net at the edge of ponds and pools of water too. If you're particularly proud of a catch, you'll be able to create a mounted trophy of that fish to display in your base. The trailer shows seven different fish mounted in a player's base, but I'm sure there will be more lurking beneath the surface for us to discover.
Article continues belowIt also looks like we'll be able to use magic skills to fish, as a player is seen using a spell on the water in the trailer, resulting in all the poor little fishies being flung into the air. If a rod and net is too old school for you, at least this looks like a more efficient option.
Much like the rest of the skills in RuneScape: Dragonwilds, we can expect fishing to have a level 99 cap as well. If you make your way through this skill, you'll be rewarded with a sleek blue-ish purple-y cape with a silver fish embellished in the middle. A worthy prize for dedicating what I can only imagine will be hours upon hours to fishing, but well worth it if you ask me. After such a long wait for this skill to be added, it would be rude not to make the most of it anyway.

Kara is an evergreen writer. Having spent five years as a games journalist guiding, reviewing, or generally waffling about the weird and wonderful, she’s more than happy to tell you all about which obscure indie games she’s managed to sink hours into this week. When she’s not raising a dodo army in Ark: Survival Evolved or taking huge losses in Tekken, you’ll find her helplessly trawling the internet for the next best birdwatching game because who wants to step outside and experience the real thing when you can so easily do it from the comfort of your living room. Right?
