After a month of voting, PC Gamer readers have picked the best RTS unit of all time
Tanks for voting.
We've done it, folks. After four rounds of voting over the last month, we can finally answer the question: what is the greatest RTS unit of all time? No take backs.
When we kicked things off, we had 16 units, culminating in a battle between Age of Empires' Priest and Command and Conquer: Red Alert's Mammoth Tank. Organised religion against the indomitable Soviet war machine.
Am I still upset with you all for knocking out Warcraft's Peon, who started strong in the first round when he demolished Rise of Legends' Glass Dragon? Yep, still pretty sore over that one! And I can't believe y'all let the Priest beat Red Alert 2's Dolphin. When it came to the final, though, I think you made the right call.
The result
It was a close fight, but with 52% of the vote, the Mammoth Tank wins!
I am pleased but surprised. The Priest was incredibly strong throughout the tournament, soundly beating all of its rivals. In the first round, it won 80% of the votes when it faced Total Annihilation's Peewee—the second biggest disparity in the whole tournament. But it couldn't keep up that momentum, I guess!
Both units had a similar path to the final. In the quarterfinals, for instance, they both went up against beloved underdogs, with the Mammoth Tank duking it out against the Peon, while the Priest murdered the Dolphin. And in the semifinals, they both faced massive spaceships and somehow survived.
Since the Mammoth Tank was Josh's pick, I'll let him bask in the glory now.
Victory speech
Comrades, fighters, tankisti. This is a triumph, but not a surprise, for how could anyone be shocked that iron and gunpowder beat hoary dogma? In what world does collective might fear personal faith? Also, Hell March is sick and wololo is annoying. Whatever, it's a new world, we're allowed to say unsayable truths now.
What do these results mean? Friends, you know the answer: big tanks rule and the PC Gamer readership rightfully recognises that. You are people of taste and discernment. The proletarian revolution is unstoppable, albeit very, very slow.
Now that we've had this stirring but humble speech from Josh, there's only one reasonable way to conclude this definitive tournament. We will all be listening to Hell March on repeat for the next 24 hours. 🫡
