It’s fair to say that gaming monitors are particularly hot right now. The latest-technology QD-OLED panels have addressed their early foibles, and many are now well-suited to both gaming AND creating. But, what you might be unaware of, is that the original OLED technology has also been evolving in the background. Its maturity means that these WOLED monitors can cost a fraction of bleeding-edge rivals while offering comparable performance and features that might even better-suit your needs.

Gigabyte recently released its latest WOLED range, which includes one of the cheapest OLED gaming monitors on the market. Many will look at them and wonder, ‘Wait! Why should I pay more?’ Here’s what you need to know...

Gigabyte’s WOLED and Tandem OLED gaming monitors

There are certain features that push a regular monitor into gaming monitor territory and Gigabyte’s range shares them all. We’ll cover them below, but first we’ll focus on individual models and the display technologies they use.

The GO27Q24G aims to be the most-affordable OLED gaming monitor on the market without skimping on premium specs. It costs a third of some similarly specced rivals and yet features a 27-inch screen with a 1,440p resolution, a blistering 240Hz refresh rate plus AMD FreeSync Premium and Nvidia G-sync support (to prevent image tearing).

Being an OLED panel, it exhibits vibrant colours, near-infinite contrast (with true blacks) and a pixel response time of just 0.03ms (GTG) – which is as fast as any OLED screen gets. The technology has also evolved to the point where its glossy coating retains the superior impact of blacks and colours and yet manages to eliminate almost all distracting reflections. It’s colour-accurate to the point where it displays 99% of the demanding DCI-P3 colour space and it supports HDR contrast with a VESA DisplayHDR True Black 400 certification.

HDR performance is barely recognisable compared to original WOLED screens. Gigabyte’s Micro Lens Array+ technology (MLA+) and a 1,300-nit peak brightness deliver much brighter and more-vivid visuals with more depth. What’s more, Gigabyte’s exclusive Hypernits tech boosts overall brightness by up to 30 percent and makes highlights pop-out from dark areas without washing-out details – even more so than traditional HDR.

These specs match some of the most-expensive gaming monitors on the market. And yet Gigabyte isn’t skimping elsewhere. The panel has a borderless design, the stand offers pivot, tilt, swivel and height adjustments and there are two integrated, 5-Watt speakers so you don’t need to reach for headphones whenever a video appears. On top of all that, Gigabyte’s AI OLED Care tech has advanced to the point where the company offers burn-in protection as part of its generous three-year warranty.

All this in a gaming monitor that retails for just $599 – and we haven’t covered the gaming features yet!

Gigabyte MO27Q28G and MO27Q28GR

Gigabyte introduced the MO27Q28GR OLED monitor for demanding gamers

The new Gigabyte MO27Q28GR has the specs you desire, including 280Hz refresh rate; 99.5% DCI-P3 colour accuracy; VESA DisplayHDR True Black 500 HDR certification with 1,500-nit peak brightness. (Image credit: Gigabyte)

A relatively recent development in the OLED world has been Tandem OLED screens. Tandem OLED is an innovative technology that stacks two RGB (red, green, and blue) emissive layers within a single OLED panel. Compared to conventional OLED, it improves lifespan and brightness while reducing power consumption, thereby further-reducing burn-in risks.

All the intrinsic OLED benefits remain: bright, vibrant colours, near-infinite HDR contrast and a 0.03ms GTG response time but some facets are dialled-up a few notches.

Gigabyte offers two similar 27-inch, 4th-Gen Tandem OLED gaming monitors: the MO27Q28G and the MO27Q28GR. The only difference between them is that the ‘R’ variant uses Gigabyte’s glossy, anti-reflection coating while its sibling has a matte finish. Many gamers prefer glossy screens, but non-glossy OLEDs are extremely rare and desirable. The MO27Q28G will turn-many heads just for offering OLED colours and contrast with a matte finish – especially with people using the same monitor for both work and play.

Both monitors share the same key specs: 1,440p resolution; blistering 280Hz refresh rate; 99.5% DCI-P3 colour accuracy; VESA DisplayHDR True Black 500 HDR certification with 1,500-nit peak brightness, MLA+ technology and Hypernits; a borderless display; all-direction adjustable stands; AI OLED care and a three-year warranty that includes burn-in, for peace of mind.

Both also ramp-up the connectivity options. There are two HDMI 2.1 ports, DisplayPort 1.4, USB-C (with 18-Watt Power Delivery), a headphone jack, plus two USB-A 3.2 ports (and a USB-B) for multi-device KVM support. All cables are provided.

It’s gaming time!

Use your Gigabyte OLED to play on PC or console

All these monitors already intrinsically enhance gaming through image quality that increases immersion plus speed for fast-and-frantic FPS performance. But Gigabyte goes further by adding its Game Assist features to its entire range.

First up is Tactical Switch 2.0 which is designed for competitive FPS players and is intended to minimise the workload on the PC, enabling very high frame rates. Pressing this configurable button immediately reduces the display area to 24-inches, drops the resolution and switches the aspect ratio to 4:3 (or even 5:4 on the Tandem OLED models). Such players will also like the small-footprint stands that let you get right-up close to the action. Plus, there’s a host of adjustable onscreen crosshairs and an Eagle Eye zoom box to help snipers.

All players will benefit from Gigabyte’s Ultra Clear technology which eliminates ghosting and motion blur by inserting black frames between rendered images. This is particularly useful for console gamers who will benefit from Gigabyte’s Aim Stabilizer, Flicker Free technology and VRR to keep the image from tearing when the action gets wild in the 120Hz-limited console universe.

There are also on-screen timers that count up or down and a variety of Picture-in/by-Picture modes to monitor two screens on the same display.

Finally, it’s worth remembering that all Gigabyte monitors have multiple eye-care technologies that enable you to comfortably work or game for extended periods.
