If ever there was an MMORPG golden age, it was the mid-to-late 2000s. Computing firepower was blasting us into believable worlds, the internet and online communities were expanding, and major MMOs set a design template that helped the genre break through into the mainstream, with a wave of great games building on what it started.
In the midst of that era came AION, an MMO that merged years of Korean MMO lineage with an epic PvPvE endgame that rages on to this day. It was among the first Korean MMOs in the post-WoW era to grab a global audience. Eighteen years on, the sequel is inbound, with developer NC setting out to deliver on every ambition the original reached for.
AION 2 is building on its predecessor's dedication to delivering an epic faction war in a beautiful world that invites exploration. We return to the world of Atreia once more, albeit 36 times larger. From the beautiful lakes of Poeta to the dreamy forests of Altgard, all the way up to the skybound PvPvE realm of the Abyss, everything's been reimagined and brought to life thanks to NC's artistic talent and the horsepower of Unreal Engine 5.
Flight was always part of AION's identity. Back in 2008, the original distinguished itself from other MMOs by letting players sprout wings and take to the skies. AION 2 weaves that into a single open world from the start, so flight shapes how you move through Atreia and how its regions connect, rather than being bolted on at the endgame.
As you travel the beautiful but collapsed world, you'll cross from the floating landmasses of the Abyss down into the sprawling nature and half-buried mysteries of the mainland, encountering other players along the way, some of whom will become allies for expeditions into the game's 200+ dungeons.
There are dedicated one-, four-, and eight-player party compositions. You'll need to approach monster encounters carefully, relying on smarts as much as on the dexterity that AION 2's fast-paced manual combat demands. Auto-combat is out; tactical positioning and backstabs are in, and players will need to balance their parties if they're to defeat some of the threats lurking in the world.
Footage has already revealed some imaginative boss designs. In one encounter, a group of players takes on an angel-winged beast in a hellish arena. After fighting the boss in classic action-RPG fashion, dodging its AoEs, healing, and chipping away at its health with well-timed strikes and magic, the fight pivots to a phase where players run through a gauntlet of deadly forcefields, threading the gaps between them with silk-smooth animation. NC clearly isn't afraid to bend the rules here, which is just what's needed in a genre that can sometimes lean too hard on tried-and-tested formulas.
The other kind of player you'll meet is the enemy: a soldier in the perpetual faction war at the heart of AION 2, where the light-aligned Elyos contest dominance against the desire-driven Asmodians. Whichever side you pick, you'll lay siege to and defend fortresses across Atreia alongside dozens of other players, backed by NPCs who put up staunch resistance as you push each siege forward.
Reaching a fortress from the open skies and dropping straight into the fight at its walls looks like a particular kind of thrill, and it's the AION fantasy carried into a new generation rather than a nostalgia trip.
Combat in AION 2 isn't only about skillful maneuvers and squad synergies. It's also about looking the part while you do it. You'll be able to make hundreds of customizations to your character, with styles ranging from alluring demonic armor to steampunk swag with brass-lined goggles and sturdy leathers. So pick your best battle drip and get ready to spread those Daeva wings.
AION 2 is expected to release in September 2026 on Steam and on NC's platform, Purple, with the whole world accessible to players from the start. You can add AION 2 to your wish list now and start prepping for the long-awaited evolution to one of the most exhilarating MMO faction wars.
