Although I would not consider myself an expert at such thinks might I ask why having only 1 or 2 'raid' healers and 4+ 'tank' healers would not counter some of Saurfangs horrible damage. Seeming as its so spikey the fight seems to me to be a fight with very little 'raid' damage and heavy multiple random spikes of tank damage (especially once frenzy hits).

This is just a thought ofc it may just be that we lacked ranged and i should go ltp shadow immediatly.

    Peace out mon!

The key mechanic for this encounter on both normal and HC is Saurfang's blood power. We can easily brute force normal with our dps, making it trivial. However, on HC he gains blood power much much quicker. It may help for everyone to refresh themselves as to the sources of this:

Melee swings (hitting the tanks - avoidance is goooood for this fight)
Rune of Blood (tanks only - fast tank swaps are essential)
Blood Nova - people standing too close
Blood Boil - dot placed on random target
Blood Beasts chomping on people - 'Blood Link' iirc

Feel free to add any I've missed (durp durp) and/or call me a nub! Anyway, each ability feeds him blood power much much faster on hc. Our problem is that he's gaining blood power (and therefore Marks of the Fallen Champ) too fast. As Darieth said last night, it's a soft enrage mechanic. So, how do we beat him? We either need to reduce the speed at which he gains or get him down faster (both would be just lovely!), which will reduce the number of Marks he gains overall. This is tricky to balance. More tank healers will not help this. More raid healers will help the healing but hurt the dps. In short: taking from Peter to give to Paul. It won't work. Moar heals, moar pewpew and definitely less blood power will help. Blood lust on pull next time we try it will give Darieth and Akee a nice little insight as to if and how quickening the kill could work for us.

P.S. I'm reliably informed by Darieth that shields, while helping with the damage, won't reduce the amount of blood power gained from Blood Boil on his random targets for this. Immunities from damage do reduce the blood power gain though. So, everyone needs to do some homework: figure out a) whether your class offers an ability that can help in this regard; and b) learn to use it under the pressure of this fight.

Shields don't reduce the accumulation of blood power anymore.

There are two things that need to happen to beat Saurfang:

    1) Healers need to make sure they can keep the Mark targets and tanks alive. This is a spam healing fight. Mana regen is more important than spell power. Healers should be constantly casting. Don't forget mana potions, shadow fiends and other mana regan tricks. Pre-arrange an innervate if necessary.

    2) Moar dps plox.

We were painfully close last night. Hopefully next time...

I suspect we'll kill him by improving BOTH our raid DPS, and our healing, by a small margin. Next week, I'd be eager to skip Saurfang, with the aim of doing some of the easier heroic encounters, getting better gear for us. Hopefully, with a few weeks' farming heroic gear, we'll have the necessary numbers.

In response to Ykyik, we had 2 holy pallies and 2 disco priests, as well as a holy priest and a shammy, so we did load up on single-target specialists. We were very, very close.

It may seem like a chore but especially for the cloth DPS try and load up on Indestructable potions - once there are 4-5 marks flying around popping one will significantly reduce the damage you take and make the sub-30% phase less stressful for the healers.

Not sure if you were doing this already but the longer you can delay the first mark the better. Using HoP on the first wave of Boiling Blood targets should keep it at bay for a fair bit longer.

Sounds like a bit of a challenge then. How did you find Lord Marrowbone et all?

Stomped all the way up to Saurfang, marrow hc, LDW normal, GSB hc. I'm sure there's a more detailed report on the way.

Having watched a few vids the number of marks people are getting varies wildly, although the earlier the vid is the more marks there are. Around the first 100 kills you are looking at 6 or 7 marks, so that is around the right number.

There is a notable appearance in hard modes for healers that is rarely seen in normal modes - non tanks taking very heavy damage spikes. It's only really seen with the harvest soul DoT in normal mode, which is only on a single target at once. Hard mode healing however currently requires lightning reactions, as can be seen doing hard mode content that is 2 tiers old up to current hard mode content.

There are several ways to help with this. The first is ensuring that your graphics settings are at a bare minimum. Projected textures and particle density control the visibility of bad stuff you need to avoid. Everything else just makes it look pretty. This isn't needed. A good healer UI is also near essential, as is a boss mod. It is of utmost importance that you know who has debuffs, who has your hots, if beacon needs refreshing, who can be shielded etc etc.

Specific to this fight you need to know mark targets and blood boil targets instantly. If blood boil is on a mark target healers need to know instantly, and react according, as they only have a couple of seconds to live otherwise. You will be pleased to know that the buff and our gear pretty much negates the early problem guilds faced of having their tanks insta-gibbed.

TL: DR hard mode healing healing is hard, anyone can die in a matter of seconds to unavoidable damage.

It sounds (and looks from the 2 videos I've watched) like one of those fights that having a couple of trees just rolling hots on the players with marks can really make a difference.

Oz you may need to grow an extra couple of branches...
