Default Bad Omen for Tomb Raider

Was looking forward to this until I saw the pre-order 'bonus' on Steam:

    Quote:
    Reward 1

A free copy of Lara Croft and the Guardian of the Light. Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is the first ever co-op multiplayer action/adventure game featuring Lara Croft. Begin an adventure combining the hallmarks of the Tomb Raider franchise, including exploration and discovery, platforming, and puzzle solving combined with character progression, fun fast-paced combat, and elements of human cooperation and competition.
Already own it? Gift it to a friend!
Well that's very kind of them.

    Quote:
    Reward 2

The Challenge Tomb DLC for Tomb Raider*
An exclusive tomb for Lara to raid! In this new location, Lara will encounter all new environment puzzles that will test her abilities.
DLC? 'Challenge Tombs'? Aren't all of the tombs inherently a challenge?

    Quote:
    Reward 3

The Endurance DLC Pack for Tomb Raider*

Be amongst the first to experience The Endurance DLC pack. Final details will be revealed in January 2013.
    More DLC? FUCKYOUFUCKYOUFUCKYOU

    ----------------------

The game is being released in March 2013 and they've already got two DLC packs lined up. Not pre-order incentive alternate costumes and a TF2 hat - presumably this is going to be released for all soon after the game.
I'll eat my own shoes if this isn't just the start.

I thought you guys were cool, Square Enix.

Pre-release DLC - with the game still having four months' development (maybe minus one or two for publishing/shipping) left to go.
That means they'll already have the content ready to go from day zero and they're intentionally holding it back as a separate package to sell later.

This isn't the kind of thing that fills me with confidence that I'm not going to get sold half a game for full retail. Again.
In fact it won't be again because I won't risk it.

Are we OK with this now?

I think the first problem is it trying to ape Uncharted.

Never got to play Uncharted, so I'm OK with this. Maybe I would've bought a PS3 if Drake had a nice pair of breasts.

In all fairness, these days nearly every major game starts their DLC development within as long as the last year of development of the main game. It makes sense, because you'll have people working on earlier parts of the game that will now be finished and rather than pay them to sit on their hands doing nothing or letting them go only to hire them back six months down the line, they work on the DLC.

For Tomb Raider in particular, I think it's slightly premature to call it content being "taken away" from the main game - the name Challenge Tombs says to me that they'll be separate specific challenge maps that are completely unrelated to what is going to be a heavily story driven game.

There's other aspects of the offering of the pre-order bonuses on Steam that are worth questioning (not mentioning how many folks are needed to unlock the other bonuses and offering stuff that people may put their money down and may not get if not enough people pre-order for example)- but the pure fact of the game having DLC is not one of them, and shouldn't be a surprise.

I will forever think of that game as Womb Raider, courtesy of PCG.

Which makes the Endurance DLC sound all the more amusing.

I would rather have them include all the DLC and just charge us $90 instead of trying to force games to stay the same price decade after decade, but I guess this is the way we have to do it.

Genuinely, I'm quite surprised by that comment - I wouldn't really assume DLC has anything to do with keeping game prices for long periods - only because apart from a select few (The FIFAs, CODs etc) they seem to come down in price very quickly these days anyway, DLC or not?
