There are four days left on the Starcraft Universe Kickstarter klock, and the fan-made multiplayer RPG still needs to raise just over $10,000 to reach its $80,000 goal. In an attempt to drum up some interest, the mod's developers have released a new module on Battle.net, and - unlike the singleplayer prologue - this time players can go online to find similar, like-minded dungeon crawlers, who can team up to slap a boss around some neon squares.
StarCraft Universe, the fan-made MMO under development using the StarCraft II engine, is now on Kickstarter with Blizzard's blessing. The team, Upheaval Arts, is asking for $80,000 to fund the free-to-play project, with stretch goals that can add playable zerg, new PvP content, and an extension of the original storyline being developed.
The annual festival celebrating all things Blizzard is set to kick of later today. We've flown Rich out to kill ten wordboars and level up his reporting skills till he finds us some news, and there's sure to be plenty. Blizzard are pretty guarded as to what's on the agenda, but there are some huge potential announcements. We'll be covering them all for you throughout the two day event.
After watching countless fan projects rapidly morph into lightning rods for litigation and stagnation, I do believe StarCraft Universe is the closest thing the modern world has to a bonafide miracle. It's a StarCraft sort-of-MMO that bloodily erupted from the fertile soils of StarCraft II's map creation tools. And the best part? After a quick nip-and-tuck to its name, it even got Blizzard's blessing.
Wait, no. That's not the best part. Not anymore. The real best part is that you can play it - or at least, its PVP arena - from now until October 30. After that, it's receding back into the fog of war and/or game development "since technically it isn't even ready for an open beta." And while beggars can't be choosers, every class kitted out with level 30 gear is hardly moldy table scraps.
So go check it out while you still have the chance. Just search "SC Universe PvP - Dev Preview" on Battle.net and you should be good to go. And maybe even a little jacked up. Maybe.
Starcraft Universe, formerly known as World of Starcraft, impressed us with its pre-alpha footage before. Now it's back with an even more impressive video, spotted by ChaosSmurf on twitter. The last we heard of the mod, the creators were involved in a minor legal scuffle with Activision and Blizzard over the mod's name. That's all resolved now, so the team has been able to get back to creating some impressive new levels, including what looks like a set piece in which players defend a flying platform from Zerg attack. The mod is created entirely using the free editing tools bundled with StarCraft 2. Find out more on the StarCraft Universe ModDB homepage.
