Minecraft Spotlight: the month's best mods, maps and texture packs

PC Gamer at

We've previously brought you our picks for Minecraft's 25 best mods and maps, but the game's passionate and talented community of creators are a fast moving bunch. Thanks to the rapid flow of new content, it's easy to miss some real gems. Hence this, the Minecraft Spotlight, highlighting some of the best recent releases that might have otherwise slipped into the Nether.

This month: biff, bash and bosh your way through mobs, find a use for those 46,656 spare strips of rotting zombie flesh, escape a giant block of flats in the sky, explore a gorgeous land for bits of wool, and coat the game in a fresh lick of RPG-inspired paint.

Minecraft mod adds beautiful lighting and water

External visualiser programs do a wonderful job of turning Minecraft's worlds into beautifully lit landscapes, as these images from the Westeros Game of Thrones project demonstrate, but wouldn't it be nice to get some of that sparkle into the game in real time? Allow Cody Darr aka Sonic Ether to help with that. IGN spotted a video of the latest version of his mod, Sonic Ether's Unbelievable Shaders, which brings lovely lighting and water effects to Minecraft. Take a closer look at the sunsets, sun beams, morning and evening lighting and rippling, reflective water in the video and screenshots below. You can download the latest version from the Sonic Ether Facebook page.

Minecraft mod API to be developed by new team at Mojang

Mojang announce that they've hired the Minecraft community members behind Bukkit to work on their server software and "offer better official support for larger servers and server modifications." Bukkit was a free, open source community-made server mod designed to make it easy for server admins to create and maintain heavily modded Minecraft servers. The tweaks they'll make to Minecraft's back end should lay the groundwork for future mod support, meaning more scope for mad mods like that one that adds a portal gun, and that glorious TNT mod, and the one that adds dinosaurs, and the millions of other Minecraft mods out there. This can only be a good thing.
