Far Cry 4 was "inches away" from including playable female characters

In my mind's eye, every hero in every Far Cry game from now until the end of time will be a meathead in a Hawaiian shirt. You might envision him differently. You might even envision him as a her, and if so you'll be probably less than thrilled to find out that you came tantalizingly close to actually playing Far Cry 4 that way, before "workload issues" brought it all to a halt.

Alienware's Steam Machine is "Steam ready" but will ship without SteamOS or controller

Alienware Alpha is a $550 Steam Machine we looked at earlier this week, during which we noted that SteamOS, the backbone of the system, isn't quite ready. That, and the inclusion of Windows 8.1 in the system specs, understandably led to some existential questions about whether a Steam Machine without SteamOS is really a Steam Machine at all; and the answer, according to Alienware, is "yes."

GTA 5 trailer analysis: cats, dogs, smog, and more new features spotted

Rockstar say the long-awaited PC version of Grand Theft Auto V will “take full advantage of the power of PC” and feature “across-the-board graphical and technical improvements” including “increased draw distances, finer texture details, new wildlife, and upgraded weather.” So I thought I’d take a closer look at the E3 trailer to see if I could find any evidence of this. It’s also worth noting that Rockstar captured this footage on a PlayStation 4, so it might look even better on PC.

The bouncy castle that is the E3 show floor is starting to deflate as we draw ever closer to the event's end. In a few days time, it'll fully collapse, trapping any lingering developers in its enormous flapping bulk. For now, there's still time to share a few loose trailers. Like this, a dramatic trailer for the startlingly pretty Project CARS.

Dead Rising 3 hands-on: improvised zombie massacre is still fun at 30FPS

Today I spent about half an hour playing the PC version of Dead Rising 3, the release of which on PC this summer came as a real surprise given how high-profile it was on the Xbox One's launch roster last year. The big news is that the framerate is locked at 30fps like on Xbox, though Capcom said during my demo that they support any community attempt to unlock it—there just won't be support for it in this released version.

Microsoft supports the release of the game on PC, despite publishing it on Xbox One, which is actually a bit of a surprise given it's only been seven months since the console's launch. The good part is, even without the framerate that players deserve, it's easy to make it look better than the Xbox One version with the deluge of advanced options available.

E3 dips into the surreal for me at least once a day. Usually it's because I see someone I recognize in a meeting or walking down the halls, but then I realize I don't actually know them, I just feel like I do because I follow them on Twitter. Today E3 was surreal because I played Shroud of the Avatar with Richard Garriott and Starr Long, the father of Ultima and the director of Ultima Online. We played online, from the E3 show floor, and when Garriott said hi in-game to a Kickstarter backer, I got a glimpse at the cult of Lord British that still exists to this day.

The Oculus Rift was one of our favorite things about last year's E3, so we were even more excited to see it at E3 2014. While both Evan and Wes got to try the new Rift DK2 unit and a trio of demos, they also spoke with Oculus vice president Nate Mitchell about the company's big hires—such as Naughty Dog co-founder Jason Rubin—and big plans for first-party content.

Razer expands into PC cases with custom-designed NZXT H440

First Razer built mice and headsets and PC accessories. Then Razer built its own computers—the Razer Blade laptop and the modular Project Christine. Now the inevitable has happened: Razer's built a PC case. The company's big product reveal for E3 2014 is a custom Razer-designed NZXT H440 case, a sleek black obelisk with the usual neon green highlighting.

The NZXT H440 is part of Razer's "Designed by Razer" initiative, which means they didn't actually manufacture the case. Instead, they took a mid-tower case design from NZXT and ran it through Razer's design team in San Francisco, tweaking the materials and aesthetics to meet Razer's specifications.

Shroud of the Avatar E3 interview: Lord British speaks to his people

E3 2014 is the first time that many in the press have been able to see Shroud of the Avatar, the new crowdfunded role-playing game from Ultima creator Richard Garriott. But that doesn't mean its backers are in the dark. Garriott, aka Lord British, says the people who have backed his game are included in every step of the process—some have even created art or music that will be used in the game.

PC Gamer spoke with Garriott and executive producer Starr Long on the E3 floor about the game, and how transparency—and the Unity engine—has changed the game development process for the better.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt unleashes new screens for E3

CD Projekt released a pile of new screens from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt today, serving up some very fine-looking action and cinematic stills taken from the game. The conclusion of Geralt's trilogy comes at a dark time for the Northern Kingdoms, as they struggle to fend off the Nilfgaardian invasion while the Wild Hunt rampages across the land. The studio claims The Witcher 3 will be even bigger than Bethesda's sprawling, open-world Skyrim, and going by these screens it'll be prettier, too.

H1Z1 designer claims engine supports "more zombies than you can kill in a lifetime"

H1Z1 is SOE’s next game, and the confluence of the Planetside 2 engine and the zombie survival setting has a shot of adding an interesting amount of depth to the walking-dead genre. Jimmy Whisenhunt, senior designer on H1Z1, came by the live Twitch stream show at E3 to talk more about the game’s goals and SOE’s devotion to involving the community in the development process.

Homefront: The Revolution drops ten minutes of E3 gameplay

I still have a little trouble with the idea of North Korea successfully invading the U.S., but I'm willing to concede that if it happened, the result probably wouldn't be pretty. Such is the case in this ten minute Homefront: The Revolution gameplay video, which depicts a small slice of life in an ugly, broken world, where the resistance must move fast, strike hard, and fight dirty against an overwhelming KPA presence.

Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris producer talks engine improvements, new scope

Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris was one of the most unexpected announcements of this week’s E3, but already we’ve gotten to see a lot of gameplay. Scot Amos, executive producer for the new game, brought a four-player gameplay video with him to the Twitch E3 livestream on Wednesday and talked for a bit about the follow-up to the well-regarded Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light.

Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime unveiled a new trailer at E3 today, joining Twitch during the second day of its E3 streaming coverage. Jamie Tucker, co-founder of Asteroid Base, came on the show to show off a game devoted to relationships, multitasking, and the power of love.

Civilization: Beyond Earth E3 interview: diplomacy, quests, and putting the pieces together

E3 isn't the easiest place to demo a sprawling, intricate strategy game like Civilization: Beyond Earth, but it is a great place to give the talented developers at Firaxis a chance to talk about the sci-fi future of Civ. Following this week’s huge news that Double Fine is releasing a remastered version of the classic adventure game Grim Fandango—and the rage-inducing news that it’s coming first to PS4—Double Fine has released a great retrospective video looking back at the game. In it, developer Tim Schafer and others talk about their roles in development, the game’s reception, and how the team started to bicker during crunch time.

Civilization: Beyond Earth devs want to play with "both science and science-fiction"

One of the most exciting games we’re getting a look at during E3 is Sid Meyer’s Civilization: Beyond Earth, the newest entry to the venerable strategy franchise. The game is set after a colonial exodus from Earth—for the first time, this Civ won’t be about going to war with Gandhi and forming an alliance with Cleopatra. The new planet comes with its own challenges and goals, according to an interview the game's co-lead designers gave to GameTrailers at E3.

Dragon Age: Inquisition dev claims 40 possible endings, nearly unlimited character options

Dragon Age: Inquisition is going to be a big game—50 hours in the main quest line alone. And what you do in those hours will have a real impact on how it concludes, according to producer Cameron Lee, who said it will have 40 "major" endings, each of them subject to additional variations.
