    Default Steam - how long does it take to DL a full game?

    How long does it typically take to download a full game on Steam? I've only used Steam for validating games and buying DLC. Obviously it depends on your connection speed. My connection is 7-8mbps average. Can someone with a similar connection speed give me an example? Having not downloaded a full game, I'm thinking it would take quite a while vs. driving and buying a boxed copy.

    7 - 8 mb (~900 - 1024 MB) is decently fast. It really depends on which game, but most games are a couple of GB. It'll take a few small hours, but it's much more convenient than driving to the store.

    What game are you considering buying?

    How long is a piece of string?

    It depends how big the game is and how popular it is at the time you try to download it.

    It's a how-long-is-a-piece-of-string question, and not just from connection speed. Eufloria from memory is about 100mb, downloaded in under 15 minutes. On the other hand, Civ 4 complete collection runs to about 18 gig, and took *hours*. I tend to leave my games to download overnight, or during times I'm not using the connection for anything else. I'd argue that unless you're living within walking distance of a store, you'll be better off with steam tho:

    Cost of leccy to power your computer overnight: £Some low figure, especially if you download two or three games at once so the cost is divided across them.
    Cost of driving to the store: £Something sick for petrol, parking, etc

    Also, steam's prices (if you're not buying stuff as-soon-as-its-released) are sickly cheap. If I'd bought my steam library in store (ignoring the stuff thats indie and not published anywhere) I'd have easily spent 3 times as much... or only gotten a third of the games I actually want to play...

    You already have all you need to work out how long it takes to download games.
    Your connection is either 7-8MB/s or 7-8Mb/s, one's eight times faster than the other. I'm gonna assume it's the latter, since I'm on a fairly fat fibre optic pipe and I only get 2-3MB/s from Steam's servers.
    Time to download:
    7-8Mb/s = ~1MB/s
    1GB = 1024MB
    Therefore, 1GB will download in 1024s, or 17 minutes roughly
    10GB will download in 170 minutes, or 2 hours 50 minutes
    This is, of course, if you stay at 8Mb/s throughout the download, experience suggests you will not, so I usually add on 10% to those kinda times.

    Thanks for the replies. I was just curious because it seems like a newer game would take hours to download. I don't really see any benefit to buying through Steam unless the game is cheaper. I still prefer to have the disc. If the game ended up being $5-10 cheaper then I would go for it.
