    Default Shadow Priest Talents Preview

    Cataclysm Changes

    Shadow Priest - "Uses sinister Shadow magic, especially damage-over-time spells, to eradicate enemies."

    New Abilities

    Mind Spike - Level 81

    Blasts the target for 1082.81 to 1144.05 Shadowfrost damage, and causes 30% of the damage to be frozen in the target's mind for 12 sec. Mind Blast on the target will instantly trigger any frozen damage up to a maximum of 2382.182 to 2516.91. Triggering this frozen damage causes a high amount of threat.

    17% of base mana, 30 yd range, 1.5 sec cast

    Deals Shadowfrost damage and puts a debuff on the target that improves subsequent Mind Spike damage. The intent of Mind Spike is to fill a niche missing in Shadow DPS, though it may be occasionally useful for healers as well. Mind Spike provides a quick nuke to use in situations where the priest doesn't have time to set up the normal rotation, such as when adds are dying too fast or you have to swap targets a lot. Spamming Mind Spike will do about as much damage as casting Mind Flay on a target afflicted with Shadow Word: Pain. The idea behind the debuff is that when you cast Mind Spike, we expect you to cast a lot of them; we don't intend you to fit it into an already full Shadow rotation. It also provides Shadow with a spell to cast when locked out of the Shadow school. (School lockouts will no longer affect both schools for multi-school spells.)

    A fight where a boss suddenly spawns an add that you're supposed to quickly burn down and then go back to the main boss. Mind Spike is what you do to that add. As a rule of thumb, if it.s going to die in under 15 seconds, then go with Mind Spike. Otherwise get your DoTs up and go into your longer rotation.

    Inner Will - Level 83

    Inner Will increases movement speed by 12% and reduces the mana cost of instant-cast spells by 10% (duration might be 30 minutes, similar to Inner Fire). This buff will be exclusive with Inner Fire, meaning you can't have both up at once. Inner Fire provides a spell power and armour buff; Inner Will should be useful on a more situational basis.


    Changes to Current Abilities

    All HoTs and DoTs will benefit from Haste and Crit innately. Hasted HoTs and DoTs will not have a shorter duration, just a shorter period in between ticks (meaning they will gain extra ticks to fill in the duration as appropriate).

    Bring back Shadow Word: Death as an "execute" -- something you do when the target is at 25% health.

    Divine Spirit and Prayer of Spirit will be removed from the game. As Spirit will be the primary mana-regeneration stat, we don't want it to vary as much between solo, small group, and raid play. Blessing of Kings and Mark of the Wild will not boost Spirit either.

    Since the Shadow tree has a lot of passive damage-boosting abilities -- something we're trying to avoid in Cataclysm -- we will need to replace several of the tree's talents. One idea is to play off of the new Shadow Orbs mechanic (see Mastery section below), possibly allowing you to consume an orb to increase damage from Mind Blast or reduce Mind Spike's cast time.

    Misery will no longer affect spell Hit chance. We want players to be able to gear themselves around a Hit cap that isn't variable depending on group composition.

    Neither Inner Fire nor Inner Will has charges. The decision is on which armor you want up at the time.

    Shadow Orbs: Casting spells grants a chance for Shadow Orbs to be created that fly around you and increase your shadow damage. This will help lower-level characters feel more like "Shadow priests" before they obtain Shadowform.

    Dispersion
    Rank 1 You disperse into pure Shadow energy, reducing all damage taken by 90%. You are unable to attack or cast spells, but you regenerate 6% mana every 1 sec for 6 sec. Dispersion can be cast while stunned, feared or silenced and clears all snare and movement impairing effects when cast, and makes you immune to them while dispersed. Instant, 2 min cooldown

    Psychic Horror
    Rank 1 You terrify the target, causing them to tremble in horror for 3 sec and drop their main hand and ranged weapons for 10 sec. 30 yd range, Instant cast, 2 min cooldown.

    Twisted Faith
    Rank 1-3 Your damage done by your Mind Flay and Mind Blast is increased by [2%/4%/6%] if your target is afflicted by your Shadow Word: Pain, and increases your spell hit rating by an additional amount equal to [4%/8%/12%] of your Spirit.

    Pain and Suffering
    Rank 1-3 Your Mind Flay has a [33%/66%/100%] chance to refresh the duration of your Shadow Word: Pain on the target, and reduces the damage you take from your own Shadow Word: Death by [10%/20%/30%].

    Empowered Shadow Orbs
    Rank 1-2 Increases the chance for you to gain a Shadow Orb when dealing damage with your Mind Flay and Shadow Word: Pain by [3%/6%], and you have a [33%/66%] chance to gain a Shadow Orb when critically hit by any attack.

    Vampiric Touch
    Rank 1 Causes 543.48 Shadow damage over 15 sec to your target and causes up to 10 party or raid members to gain 1% of their maximum mana per 5 sec when you deal damage from Mind Blast. In addition, if the Vampiric Touch is dispelled it will cause 869.57 damage to the afflicted target. 30 yd range, 1.5 sec cast.

    Shadowy Apparition
    Rank 1-3 When you deal periodic damage with your Shadow Word: Pain, you have an [2%/6%/4%] chance to summon a shadow version of yourself which will slowly move towards a target which is afflicted by your Shadow Word: Pain. Once reaching the target, it will instantly deal damage equal to 15% of your Mind Blasts damage.

    While moving, the chance to summon the shadowy apparition is increased to [20%/40%/60%].

    Silence
    Rank 1 Silences the target, preventing them from casting spells for 5 sec. Non-player victim spellcasting is also interrupted for 3 sec. 30 yd range, Instant cast, 45 sec cooldown

    Vampiric Embrace
    Rank 1 Fills you with the embrace of Shadow energy, causing you to be healed for 15% and other party members to be healed for 3% of any single-target Shadow spell damage you deal for 30 min.

    Shadow Power
    Rank 1-2 Increases the critical strike damage bonus of your Mind Blast, Mind Spike, Mind Flay, and Shadow Word: Death spells by [20%/40%].

    Mind Melt
    Rank 1-2 Increases the damage done with your Shadow Word: Death by [15%/30%] on targets at or below 25% health, and and when you deal damage with Mind Spike, the cast time of your next Mind Blast is reduced by [25%/50%] lasting 6 sec. Mind Melt can stack up to [3/2] times.

    Shadowform
    Rank 1 Assume a Shadowform, increasing your Shadow damage by 15%, reducing all damage done to you by 15%. However, you may not cast Holy spells while in this form. Instant cast, 1.5 sec cooldown

    Improved Shadowform
    Rank 1-2 Your Fade ability now has a [50%/100%] chance to remove all movement impairing effects when used while in Shadowform, and increases the spell critical effect chance to all nearby party and raid members by [3%/5%] within 100 yards.

    Improved Devouring Plague
    Rank 1-3 Increases the periodic damage done by your Devouring Plague by [5%/10%/15%], and when you cast Devouring Plague you instantly deal damage equal to [10%/20%/30%] of its total periodic effect.

    Improved Psychic Scream
    Rank 1-2 Reduces the cooldown of your Psychic Scream spell by [2/4] sec.

    Improved Mind Blast
    Rank 1-3 Reduces the cooldown of your Mind Blast spell by [0.5/1/1.5] sec., and while in Shadowform your Mind Blast also has a [20%/40%/60%] chance to reduce all healing done to the target by 25% for 10 sec.

    Veiled Shadows
    Rank 1-2 Decreases the cooldown of your Fade ability by [3/6] sec, and reduces the cooldown of your Shadowfiend ability by [1/2] minutes.

    Darkness
    Rank 1-3 Increases your Shadow spell damage by [2%/4%/6%].

    Improved Shadow Word: Pain
    Rank 1-2 Increases the damage of your Shadow Word: Pain spell by [3%/6%].

    Spirit Tap
    Rank 1-3 When you kill a target that yields experience or honor, you instantly gain [5%/10%/15%] of your total mana and your mana regeneration rate will be increased by [20%/25%/30%] for 15 sec.

    Shadow Talent Tree

    Tier 1 (Left to Right)

    Dark Thoughts (2 ranks available) - Must Have
    Reduces the pushback suffered from damaging attacks while casting any Shadow spell by 35/70%.

    Improved Spirit Tap (2 ranks available) - Must Have
    Your Mind Blast and Shadow Word: Death critical strikes have a 100% chance, and your Mind Flay critical strikes have a 50/100% chance to increase your total spirit by 5/10%. For the duration, your mana will regenerate at a 17/33% rate while casting. Lasts 8 seconds.

    Darkness (5 ranks available) - Must Have
    Increases your Shadow spell damage by 2/4/6/8/10%.

    Tier 2 (Left to Right)

    Shadow Affinity (3 ranks available) - Optional depending on threat in Cata
    Reduces the threat generated by your Shadow spells by 8/16/25%, and you receive 5/10/15% of your base mana when your Shadow Word: Pain or Vampiric Touch spells are dispelled.

    Improved Shadow Word: Pain (2 ranks available) - Must Have
    Increased the damage of your Shadow Word: Pain spell by 3/6%.

    Shadow Weaving (3 ranks available) - Must Have
    Your Shadow damage spells have a 33/66/100% chance to increase the Shadow damage you deal by 2% for 15 seconds. Stacks up to 5 times.

    Tier 3 (Left to Right)

    Improved Psychic Scream (2 ranks available) - Optional - PvP
    Reduces the cooldown of your Psychic Scream spell by 2/4 seconds.

    Improved Mind Blast (5 ranks available) - Must Have
    Reduces the cooldown of your Mind Blast spell by 0.5/1/1.5/2/2.5 seconds, and while in Shadowform your Mind Blast also has a 20/40/60/80/100% chance to reduce all healing done to the target by 25% for 10 seconds.

    Mind Flay (1 rank available) - Must Have
    1853 Mana 30 yd range
    Channeled
    Assault the target's mind with Shadow energy, causing 501 Shadow damage over 3 seconds and slowing their movement speed by 50%.

    Tier 4 (Left to Right)

    Veiled Shadows (2 ranks available) - Must Have
    Decreases the cooldown of your Fade ability by 3/6 seconds and reduces the cooldown of your Shadowfiend ability by 1/2 minutes.

    Shadow Reach (2 ranks available) - Must Have
    Increase the range of your offensive Shadow spells by 10/20%.

    Empowered Shadow Orbs [PH] [NYI] (3 ranks available) - Must Have
    Increases the damage done by your Shadow Orbs by 2/4/6%, and you have a h/h/h% chance to gain a Shadow Orb when critically hit by any attack.

    Tier 5 (Left to Right)

    Silence (1 rank available) - Optional - PvP
    225 Mana 33 yd range
    Instant cast 45 sec cooldown
    Silences the target, preventing them from casting spells for 5 seconds. Non-player victim spellcasting is also interrupted for 3 seconds.

    Vampiric Embrace (1 rank available) - Optional
    Instant
    Fills you with the embrace of Shadow energy, causing you to be healed for 15% and other party members to be healed for 3% for any single-target Shadow spell damage you deal for 30 minutes.

    Improved Vampiric Embrace (2 ranks available) - Requires 1 point in Vampiric Embrace - Optional
    Increase the healing received from Vampiric Embrace by 33/67%.

    Focused Mind (3 ranks available) - Must Have
    Reduces the mana cost of your Mind Blast, Mind Control, Mind Flay and Mind Sear spells by 5/10/15%.

    Tier 6 (Left to Right)

    Mind Melt (2 ranks available) - Must Have
    Increases the additional damage done with your Shadow Word: Death by 5/10% on targets at or below 25% health, and and when you deal damage with Mind Spike, the cast time of your next Mind Blast is reduced by 11/33% lasting 6 seconds. Mind Melt can stack up to 3 times.

    Improved Devouring Plague (3 ranks available) - Must Have
    Increase the periodic damage done by your Devouring Plague by 5/10/15%, and when you cast Devouring Plague you instantly deal damage equal to 10/20/30% of its total periodic effect.

    Tier 8 (Left to Right)

    Shadowy Apparition [PH] [NYI] (3 ranks available) - Must Have
    While moving or dealing damage with your Shadow Word: Pain, you will sometimes summon a Shadow version of yourself which will slowly move towards a target which is afflicted by your Shadow Word: Pain. Once reaching that target, it will instantly deal damage equal to 15/30/45% of your Mind Blast’s damage.

    Tier 9 (Left to Right)

    Causes 1000 Shadow damage over 15 seconds to your target and causes up to 10 party or raid members to gain 1% of their maximum mana per 5 seconds when you deal damage from Mind Blast. In addition, if the Vampiric Touch is dispelled it will cause 1600 damage to the afflicted target.

    Pain and Suffering (3 ranks available) - Must Have
    Your Mind Flay has a 33/66/100% chance to refresh the duration of your Shadow Word: Pain on the target, and reduces the damage you take from your own Shadow Word: Death by 10/20/30%.

    Tier 10

    Tier 2

    Improved Inner Fire (3 ranks available) - Take (77/80)
    Increases the effect of your Inner Fire spell by 15/30/45%.

    Focused Power (2 ranks avaialble) - Take (79/80)
    Reduces the cast time of your Mind Control spell by 0.3/0.5 seconds, and your Mass Dispel cast time is reduced by 0.5/1 second.

    Tier 3

    Inner Focus (1 rank available) - Take (80/80)
    Instant 1.5 min cooldown
    When activated, reduces the mana cost of your next spell by 100% and increases its critical effect chance by 25% if it is capable of a critical effect.

    Much like resto and elemental shamen will have lots of crossover gear, so it seems that a hybrid shadow/healy priest will be able to use much the same gear for both their roles. Gems and enchants will still vary, obviously.

    Yeah its definitely good news for healers with a shadow off spec. Will have to wait and see if shadow main spec should roll on spirit gear at all - I think not.

    We've hit beta testing so I've updated the OP with a summary of all the current changes.

    I've also moved the OP to the second post just for reference.

    The changes look really good, can't wait to try them out.

    hmm Shadowy Apparition proc increased to 60% when moving

    Why do i think part of the rotation now will be the SWP two step

    I can just see people trying to time it to move just at the right point in the rotation before a SWP tick to get a shadow to spawn

    Lets do the timewarp again...............
