Samsung produces more than a few excellent ultra-ultra-wide monitors, like the fantastic Odyssey G9 and the Odyssey G7 (opens in new tab), and one of the best is currently on sale. The 49-inch Samsung CRG9 is now discounted to $999.99 on Amazon, a generous saving from the RRP of $1,499.99. Despite the hefty discount, you're still getting a monitor that boasts a sweet 120Hz refresh rate, 5K horizontal resolution, and HDR support.

By most metrics, there's virtually nothing in it between these monitor powerhouses. Both the CRG9 and the G9 are VESA DisplayHDR 1000 certified, and top out at a retina-searing 1000 nits peak brightness. Both use huge 49-inch Samsung VA panels with 95% coverage of the DCI-P3 color space and 5,120 by 1,440 pixels.

Indeed, this cheaper panel is actually superior in some ways. It packs a 3,000 to one static contrast to the G9's 2,500 to one. On the other hand, the G9 is rated at 1ms for pixel response to the CRG9's 4ms.

But the biggest differences are in refresh rate and curvature. This is a 120Hz panel. The G9 is a 240Hz beast. Moreover, where the G9 gets a crazy-tight 1000R bend, the CRG9 has a more gentle 1800R sweep—something you may actually prefer, as tight curves can be a little claustrophobic.

49-inch beast

Samsung CRG9 | 49-inch | 120Hz | $1,499.99 $999.99 on Amazon (save $500) (opens in new tab)
This 49-inch beast is comparable with the megabuck Samsung Odyssey G9 by most metrics, including DisplayHDR 1000 capability. It's not quite as tightly curved or as fast at 4ms rather than 1ms. But with 120Hz refresh and 1000 nits of brightness, it's still an absolute beauty.

Samsung CHG90 | 49-inch | 144Hz | $1,099.99 $749.99 on Amazon (save $350) (opens in new tab)
Another 49-inch beast, but with a slightly lower 3,840 x 1,080 resolution and without the retina-roasting HDR1000 capabilities. Still, it's a huge panel with 144Hz refresh support. What's more, the lower res will give you a better chance of actually hitting those buttery smooth refresh highs.

If these screens are a little rich for your wallet, there's also the Samsung CHG90. It's yet another high-refresh 49-inch Samsung gaming panel. At 144Hz, it's still a pretty nippy panel, but can only hit 350 nits brightness. It's also significantly lower resolution at 3,840 by 1,080 pixels. But the main event—those huge 49-inch proportions—remain, and all for $749, again its lowest-ever price on Amazon. (opens in new tab)
