Lord of the Rings Online: Helm's Deep expansion release delayed

Patrick Carlson at

Sometimes even the perfect siege gets a false start. Lord of the Rings Online: Helm's Deep, a new expansion to the Tolkienesque MMORPG, was supposed to go live today. But thanks to a power outage at the game's data center, the release has been delayed until Wednesday, according to an update to developer Turbine's Facebook page.

The Lord of the Rings Online giving players double XP in advance of Helm's Deep launch

Tom Sykes at

Lord of the Rings Online's Helm's Deep expansion was announced back in April, but it still hasn't seen the light of day, something I'm going to blame on Boromir, the treacherous git. However, it seems to be on track now for a November release, with the month (that's this month) leading up to it bestowing all players with a very special gift. No, not a single lock of Galadriel's hair: double XP.

Cause tourist town havoc in Infinite Crisis' new map

Katie Williams at

There's just something about seaside resort hotels, gently swaying palm trees, and fruity cocktails in coconut-shell vessels that draws gamers in for a bit of escapism and relaxation. Oh, and also causing a ruckus and inciting panic amongst the few remaining tourists in town. Infinite Crisis is the latest to join the tropical madness conga line, with DC Comics superheroes flooding its new two-lane map Coast City.

Major League Gaming and Infinite Crisis join forces

Perry Vandell at

For a game that’s still in closed beta, Infinite Crisis is doing quite well for itself. The free-to-play MOBA has partnered with eSports behemoth, Major League Gaming, and will be among League of Legends and Black Ops II as a featured title in future competitions.

The Lord of the Rings Online: Helm's Deep announced

T.J. Hafer at

The Lord of the Rings Online has led us through Moria and Mirkwood, past Isengard, and across the plains of Eastern Rohan. But the question has remained throughout it all: "When do we get to see Helm's Deep?" Turbine has finally given us an answer: Fall 2013. Along with the famed fortress, we're also getting 10 new levels and a continuation of the game's storyline to include one of the most famous battles in Tolkien's legendarium.

MOBA Madness: Five new games on the horizon, and how they measure up

T.J. Hafer at

The MOBA/ARPG genre is exploding. From indie devs to mid-sized studios in international markets, the subgenre that began as a WarCraft III custom map is gaining traction and diversity. Over the last few weeks, we've taken a look at a fair few upcoming challengers in the arena. From a modern military MOBA/top-down shooter hybrid to a licensed effort with steampunk Batman, we've broken down where each one fits in, and what makes it different from what's already out there.

Turbine revives Asheron's Call 2, opens beta server

Omri Petitte at

Asheron Call 2's run lasted from 2002 to 2005 as the sequel to Turbine's original Asheron's Call, which is still active to this day. Yeah, MMOs are weird like that sometimes. In a forum post yesterday (via Rock, Paper, Shotgun), Turbine abruptly announced it's bringing back Asheron's Call 2 via the new Dawnsong server.

Behind the music of Lord of the Rings Online's Riders of Rohan expansion

T.J. Hafer at

Earlier in the week, we gave you a look at the mounted combat system coming in Lord of the Rings Online's Riders of Rohan expansion. But if horses are the most important thing to portraying the Riddermark of Tolkien's world, the second most important things has got to be fiddles. Preferably ancient Norwegian fiddles, of the sort composer Chance Thomas used in crafting the expansion's score. Check out the video inside to hear more about how the music of Rohan was created.

Lord of the Rings Online: Riders of Rohan trailer shows mounted combat

Hobbits are a proud but diminutive race, so plonking one on an eight foot tall battle steed is probably a good idea if you're planning to do some serious fighting. The upcoming Riders of Rohan update for Lord of the Rings Online will let us do just that. Whether mage or ranger, elf or Hobbit, everyone will get to do some war from beastback. Rich doesn't trust horses. He thinks of them as secret lizards coated in hair, so a trailer showing hobbits and wizards riding them into battle on their backs is likely to freak him out. That is one of many reasons to post this very video, spotted on VG247.

Listen to beautiful player-made music at LOTRO's Weatherstock music event today

Josh Augustine at

Once a year, Lord of the Rings Online players gather for a day of music and dancing at the player-run Weatherstock event, and it's happening right now on the Landroval server.

LOTRO has a full musical system that let you "play" the wide variety of instruments in the game live by using the buttons on your keyboard, composing music on the fly. You can also pre-record or script music to play, and there will be a mix of pre-recorded music and live playing at today's Weatherstock event.

It starts at 1 PM PST, but bands are already warming up. You can watch it live on MMOReporter's stream all day long.

Lord of the Rings Online makes it way to Steam

Josh Augustine at

One does not simply walk into the Steam free-to-play catalog—or at least that's what Turbine seems to think. Better late than never, they've brought their free-to-play epic fantasy MMO Lord of the Rings Online to the Steam store this morning.

LotRO: Riders of Rohan release date is September 5, new trailer shows mounted combat

Would Gandalf unhorse to fight a goblin? No. He'd fling his beard over one shoulder and wang them with his staff from on high. In the Riders of Rohan expansion for free-to-play MMO Lord of the Rings Online, you'll no longer have to dismount like a peasant to do battle with your foes. Roaming Warg bands will dominate the eastern regions of Rohan, and you'll be able to pluck them off their saddles by riding right at them and activating one of a series of new combat skills from horseback. If you miss, you can bring your steed around for another go while your cooldowns recharge.

Dungeons & Dragons Online druid trailer is beastly

Tom Senior at

Dungeons and Dragons Online will get the first full expansion of its six year history late next month, which will add new lands and new foes to thwart. You could do this with one of the existing DDO classes of course, but where are the rabid animals in that? The druid's mastery of nature will let them have pets, summon additional companions and charm creatures in the wild to trample the invading dark elf forces using the deadly power of MAMMALS. Their spellbooks are full of more showy elemental magic and some healing tricks if you prefer a more varied approach. Find out more in our D&D Online: Menace of the Underdark preview. It's out on June 25.

Lord of the Rings Online turns five, celebrates with Gandalf firework festival

D&D Online: Menace of the Underdark gets trailer, will include shapeshifting tree huggers

Tom Hatfield at

Dungeons and Dragons Online was one of the first wave of western MMOs to experiment with free to play (along with Lord of the Rings Online and Age of Conan) revitalising the game's playerbase. Nowadays of course everyone and his hat is going FTP, but back then Dungeons and Dragons was a trailblazer, so it's with a whiff of nostalgia that we hear news of the game's newest expansion, Menace of the Underdark.

DC Universe Online adds perks to its subscription option, lockboxes for everyone

Josh Augustine at

Like 'em or not, lockboxes are the latest craze in free-to-play games. These little chests of mystery show up on your fallen foes sealed alarmingly well, and often require a special key purchased from the cash shop to open them. DC Universe Online will be the latest to jump on this trend with next week's patch, but it will at least allow subscribers to open all of them for free. In addition, subscribers will be getting a few other nice perks starting next Tuesday.

Druid class revealed for Dungeons & Dragons Online

Gavin Townsley at

I rolled a druid the very first time I ever played the pen-and-paper classic Dungeons & Dragons. I didn't get to shapeshift like these fancypants druids you see in games nowadays, but I did manage to save my group by streaking through a bug bear camp to divert the enemy's attention. The druid class is finally coming to Dungeons & Dragons Online in the Menace of the Underdark expansion, releasing on June 25th. I'm already taking my clothes off in preparation for any dangers my group may encounter.
