A free to play team shooter that lets everyone be a tank - a simple formula with global appeal. World of Tanks was a stark change of direction for Wargaming.net, who spent a decade making strategy games before deciding to embrace the free to play model and build an online shooter instead. The beta version ran for years and gained hundreds of thousands of players as it spread from from Russia to Europe, China and beyond.
It's extremely moreish. The accessible point-and-shoot control scheme masks a complex ballistics system that models the mass and trajectory of projectiles against different tanks' armour thickness and slope. Tanks have historically accurate weak points and vary enormously in their application depending on technical factors, like ground clearance, range and turret turning speed. Different tank classes let you flank speedily, snipe from ridges or launch long-range artillery, and every kill earns in-game currency that can be used to upgrade your tanks with new barrels, turrets, engines and crew members.
Wargaming.net plan to follow up on WoT with World of Warplanes in 2013 and World of Battleships sometime further down the line.
