Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire will let us become fearsome pirates when it walks the slightly delayed plank in May. In the meantime, the fantasy RPG now has a 'features' trailer that teases its companion and ship customisation options and—oh dear lord what is that flame-infused, skeletal dragon-bird-monster thing?
You tell me:
Character profiles from the first Pillars of Eternity can be transferred to Deadfire, explains Andy here, but players can craft new ones from scratch should they wish. Opting for the latter lets you take advantage of the sequel's new multiclass system—which allows you to combine strengths across classes. New party member Xoti, a monk and priest who's also a refugee, typifies this crossover.
Here's Andy on that:
This should make character creation even deeper than before. Expect to spend a good 40 minutes creating your Watcher if you start fresh. There’s also Maia Rua, an aumaua ranger who travels with a bird of prey companion called Ishiza. She’s an experienced ship captain, a skill that’ll come in handy on the high seas. There will be other companions in the final game, but Obsidian is keeping the rest of the roster close to its chest. Rest assured, there’ll be plenty of oddballs to adventure with.
One my favourite things about fantasy role-players are their hulking superbosses. I'm looking forward to finding out more about that demon-dragon thing featured above—although I might send in an auxiliary character or two to scope it out before heading in myself.
Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire is due May 8, 2018.
