The Talos Principle writer promises it won't be a "horrible edutainment borefest"

The Talos Principle's developer bills the game as a "philosophical first-person puzzle game," and it's being co-written, along with Penumbra writer Tom Jubert, by Jonas Kyratzes, the creator of The Infinite Ocean, "a sci-fi adventure about sentience, freedom and the search for truth." It sounds like a sure-fire recipe for an intellectually heavy journey of introspection and self-discovery, but Kyratzes says players won't have to wander down that garden path if they don't want to.

As a fan of Jonas Kyratzes' work, I did a double-take when I saw his name at E3, during the trailer for Croteam's The Talos Principle. The Lands of Dream co-creator, along with talented fellow writer Tom Jubert (The Swapper, FTL, Penumbra), and of course developers Croteam, are making a philosophical first-person puzzler and "metaphysical parable about intelligence and meaning in an inevitably doomed world". As this hour-and-a-bit Let's Play of the beta version reveals, it's a metaphysical parable about intelligence and meaning in an inevitably doomed world involving droney robots, security cameras, QR codes and jamming devices. Also a beautiful Mediterranean ruined world.


Ithaka of the Clouds: the latest adventure from the team behind The Sea Will Claim Everything

Jonas Kyratzes has spent the last few years peeking into the Lands of Dream - a realm where "everything once imagined is real, as are many things no mortal has yet conceived of", brought to life by his own writing, the art of Verena Kyratzes, and more recently the exquisite music of Chris Christodoulou. After several free games set in the Lands, Kyratzes released The Sea Will Claim Everything, a sort of picture-book adventure game with a focus on storytelling and exploration. Now, he's taken to Indiegogo to fund Ithaka of the Clouds, a point-and-click adventure with a "funny, moving, bittersweet story", crafting, philosophy and bad puns, among other things - all in the biggest Lands of Dream game yet.


Terry Cavanagh abandons development on RPG project Nexus City

Terry Cavanagh, the man behind the indie hits VVVVVV and Super Hexagon (and, as such, the man whose name I've cursed thousands of times) has announced he's no longer to develop Nexus City, or its spin-off game Selma's Story. Nexus City was to be an RPG collaboration between Cavanagh and writer/developer Jonas Kyratzes, whose previous games include The Sea Will Claim Everything and the free Twine game Moonlight.

Happy End of the World! At least, that's what I assume happened today - the Mayans have never steered me wrong before. If you're wondering, I'm typing this from a lead-lined vault deep underground, which I escaped to last night; one of the other Vault-Dwellers has been stealing water, but apart from that everything is fine. *Sobs*. Assuming there's still an Earth left, I'm guessing you've been transformed into some sort of hideous mutant, so I hope you have enough fingers to play a selection of the week's best webgames. Most of them aren't particularly Christmassy, so I suggest you Xmas them up a bit by wearing a santa hat and drinking a glass of mulled wine seasoned with a couple of sprouts. Oh and make these games last - I won't be leaving the vault until next year. Merry everyone!
