The best thing about Cyanide's first Blood Bowl was the Games Workshop ruleset that supported it. Clunky UI and some wobbly networking almost spoiled the appeal of violent, high-fantasy Gridiron. The latest Blood Bowl 2 trailer shows the new match engine, which certainly looks the part, but will those important underlying systems be fixed? Ponder that as you watch some big green fellas squashing some little pink fellas in the first moving pictures of a BB2 match.
This passed me by somehow, but it's still worth a mention. There's going to be a Mordheim game! Mordheim is one of Games Workshop's more obscure Warhammer Fantasy spin-off projects. It's a turn-based strategy game set in a city obliterated by a magic meteorite. Precious fragments of said meteorite, called Wyrdstone, have drawn bandits and adventurers from every corner of the world. Giant rat-men face off against heroes of the empire, Elves, pirates, mercenaries, Witch Hunters and chaos demons. It's like the end of the Hobbit, except the armies are 1000 times smaller, and prone to incurring terrible injuries and mounting psychological damage from battle to battle.
Giving power to the people can be a dangerous prospect - especially when those people are a game's community. There's always a chance they'll be completely unhinged. Luckily for Eugen Systems, when they turned to their fans to get feedback on Wargame: Airland Battle, they instead received a collection of features that could drastically improve the already top real-time strategy. Those features have now been implemented, and released for free in the Vox Populi DLC pack.
How To Trailer, Lesson #38: If you're attempting to explain an interesting, tactically satisfying, but visually dry strategy system, be sure to liven things up with an exciting non-sequitur to rock music-backed cuts of explosions and military hardware.
