League of Legends was one of the first games to bring the Defence of the Ancients formula to a mass audience, with great success. LoL riffs closely on the Dota formula, presenting players with a friendly and unfriendly base separated by three lanes guarded by towers. Each base spawns waves of creatures that meet in the middle, where it's up to each team of five players to push back the enemy line and obliterate their base. LoL works on a free to play model that offers a collection of heroes for free on a rotating basis. New legends, announcer packs and costumes can be purchased as microtransactions.

League of Legends is infamous for having an aggressive, noob-unfriendly community - a problem that Riot have been keen to combat with a tribunal system that encourages players to judge offenders. This hasn't especially put people off. Late in October 2012, Riot revealed that 32 million players logged into LoL every month. League of Legends has become a regular staple in the esports scene and is still thriving in the face of growing competition from Valve's Dota 2.
