Magic: The Gathering - The tale of The Beanstalk Giant

Welcome to Eldraine—a storybook land of castles and cauldrons, of chivalrous knights and trickster faeries. But like the devious creatures and beguiling magic that lurk among the shadows, this world is not all that it seems. Join the five courts of the Realm on an epic adventure for honor and glory, or venture a darker path into the mysterious Wilds. Which path will you choose?

Once upon a time there was a boy called Jack. One day, Jack decided to sell the family cow for a handful of magic beans. His family was livid. Oh Jack! How could you do something so silly!

But he knew the magic beans were special.

So he planted a couple and the next day a beanstalk as tall as his cottage had appeared! He planted a few more and the beanstalk grew even higher.

Then, for some reason, Jack decided to plant them all...

The next morning he awoke to find a beanstalk spiralling high up into the sky. He was convinced untold riches awaited him at the top, so he began to climb. I’ll be a hero, thought Jack.

But no. Just three feet up the beanstalk Jack stopped.

‘I’m not going up there,’ he said. ‘I hate heights.’

Suddenly he heard a booming voice from above. It shook the clouds and hurt Jack’s ears.

Fee-fi-fo-fum!
I smell the blood of an Englishman:
Be he alive, or be he dead,
I'll grind his bones to make my bread.’

The beanstalk began to shudder and shake. Rather than Jack climbing up the beanstalk, a giant was climbing down it!

Eventually he reached the bottom and glared down at the pathetic tiny human cowering in front of him. Jack looked up at the towering giant. Maybe if I had just planted a couple magic beans then perhaps the giant wouldn’t be so blummin’ big, he thought.

‘Please, good giant, show mercy.’ Jack’s bottom lip quivered.

Perhaps the giant didn’t hear the boy. Perhaps he did. Either way, it didn’t matter. In one thunderous movement the giant turned around and sat down squarely on Jack. There was a little crunch of bone and a squeaky whimper. ‘Ooops,’ said the giant.

The beanstalk quivered again. More and more giants were climbing down from the clouds. Down, down, down they came. Dozens, hundreds, thousands.

They ran off in all directions, crushing everything – and everyone - in their path. They flattened every magical castle, squashed every beautiful palace (including the Charming Prince’s) and trampled every enchanted forest.

So it was that giants took over the land of Eldraine because of Jack’s fear of heights.

And no one lived happily ever after.

Nighty night. Sleep well.
