Devil May Cry 5 release date, demo, trailers, and everything else we know

We quite liked DMC: Devil May Cry back in 2013, but that didn't stop many longtime fans from having a few gripes with New Dante and his brunette makeover. So much so that its upcoming sequel, Devil May Cry 5, brings back the white-haired devil man, and a humble apology of sorts from Capcom, who have promised repeatedly to work to make hardcore series fans happy. And everything we've seen does look like DMC5 is shaping up to be a heck of a faithful action sequel.

Here’s when Devil May Cry 5 releases on PC, who's back for the sequel, and everything else we know.

Devil May Cry 5 release date

Devil May Cry 5's release date is March 8, 2019. It's already available to pre-order on Steam for $59.99.

Devil May Cry 5 won't have DLC after launch

Capcom has confirmed that Devil May Cry 5 won't have any DLC after launch: that is, beyond the Deluxe Edition content that's available on Steam on day one of release. If you were wondering about season passes, then, everything you'll be able to get in DMC5 will be available right away. 

Devil May Cry 5 collector's editions

There’s a couple Devil May Cry 5 collector’s editions available. First up is the $70 Deluxe Edition, which will get you a Steam copy of Devil May Cry 5, alternate costumes for Dante, Nero, Nico, Lady, and Trish and 100,000 red orbs right out of the gate that you’ll use to upgrade your characters’ powers.

It also includes four new Devil Breaker prosthetic arms that unlock some ridiculous attacks, like a Mega Man cannon that shoots, and one that lets Nero eat pasta more efficiently. Yeah, I don’t know either.

The Deluxe Edition also comes with some songs from the soundtrack for download, alternate style rank announcers, an alternate bike for Dante to ride, and strangely enough, the ability to watch live action versions of certain cutscenes. Oh, and a lovely little wallpaper, but you can get that if you pre-order the regular version.

Here’s a really weird clip from the DMC Twitter account that shows the live action stuff bordering between awesome dumb and regular dumb.

The $149.99 Devil May Cry 5 Collector’s Edition comes with everything in the Deluxe Edition, as well as an 8-inch Devil May Cry motor home replica. There's also an art book and notes from Nico’s workbench (with some weapon designs), a pin, bumper sticker, and a cloth print of some art featuring the main cast. But nuts to all that. You want that $8,000 Ultra Limited Edition. It comes with a real genuine, floor-length leather coat that looks just like Dante’s, or Nero’s blue coat with one arm missing (authenticity!) for $6,500, or V’s sleeveless goth band outfit for $5,300. According to everything we’ve seen, those coats are only being sold in Japan, so getting a PC code alongside them is pretty unlikely. Also set aside enough for import fees (as if that would be the breaking point).

Devil May Cry 5 demo

We’ve already had one demo for Xbox One users, but there will be another demo coming February 7. Unfortunately, it’s only for PS4 and Xbox One players. We’ll update this page if a PC demo appears, though.

Devil May Cry 5 trailers

It’s been about seven months since Devil May Cry 5 was announced at E3 2018, and there have been plenty of trailers in the meantime. First off was the E3 trailer, featuring Nero and Nico busting some demon ass and showing off Nero's fancy new prosthetic arm.

The GamesCom trailer came a little later, and showed off several huge bosses Nero will fight, including a shadowy figure with a giant pair of scissors, a spiky venus fly trap, a huge mech-beetle thing, and a demon that really hates hoverboards.

The TGS 2018 trailer finally gave us some gameplay of Dante cleaving dudes apart with the two halves of his motorcycle transformed into blades, as well as our first taste of the character V. We also see Trish and Lady helping Dante out.

The 2018 Game Awards trailer gave us a lengthy look at how V will play. Seems like he’ll use his cane and book to summon demonic entities to do his dirty work for him, like a dark condor and a panther, all while taking things at a much slower, more deliberate pace. Also, Dante kills things with a cowboy hat now.

Devil May Cry 5 gameplay and characters

The Devil May Cry gameplay you know and love is still here, but with some interesting flourishes thanks to modern hardware. What’s obvious is that you’re here to kick demon tail, all with an assortment of guns and swords. Landing greater and greater combos will up your ranking, earning you red orbs to power up Nero and company’s various skills and to buy new weapons.

Since Devil May Cry 5 is a direct sequel to Devil May Cry 4, Nero has lost his demon arm and replaced it with the robotic “Devil Breaker” prosthetic. There will be eight types of arms Nero can use in combat. Before you start a mission you equip a set of four arms you can burn through as quickly as you like. You can restock your loadout at Nico's van, which you can summon at payphones in the middle of some missions. Nico can also suggest loadouts that fit the upcoming mission. 

You can play through the game successfully with any arms, but some will be more useful against particular enemies. A drill arm specialises in breaking the guard of some defensive monsters, like ghostly reapers that block with giant scissors. Other arms, like a rocket fist that zooms around the area, are good at taking on clusters of weak enemies.

At GamesCom, Tom played a demo and had plenty of thoughts, particularly about the frustrating camera issues, but he found these much improved in a recent six-hour play session

Other arms include a blue variety that gives Nero an electrical thrust attack, and a green arm gives Nero a spiraling uppercut that sends enemies into the air. You can switch arms out by exploding them to bits in a big area-of-effect attack, creating a risk/reward mechanic. Run out of arms and you’ve only got one good hand to wield Nero’s sword and gun. Tom noticed that you’re never forced to throw away an arm, but that combat definitely encourages it in the right moment.

Other arm abilities we’ve noticed come from the above trailers, where you can see Nero firing a giant laser into a crowd of aerial enemies. There’s even one that looks just like Mega Man’s cannon. Check out this hilarious clip.

Dante is doing his classic DMC thing, save for the addition of his motorcycle blades and the Faust hat. He can switch guns and melee weapons instantly, and use the D-pad to shift combat styles between his classic Trickster, Swordmaster, Gunslinger, and Royal Guard abilities. This flexibility will allow for creative combos that incorporate weapons and attacks from throughout the Devil May Cry series. 

Playing as V is where combat gets really different.

The goth-looking young man is clearly taking combat at a much more methodical pace than anything Nero or Dante have to offer. You have to manage the battlefield with an assortment of powers, like summoning shadowy beasts, or possessing building-sized creatures for a Godzilla-like fistfight.

V has three specific buddies to help out with this, including Shadow the panther and Griffon the condor. Shadow will keep busy damaging enemies at close range by changing his form into blades and needles, while Griffon will ferry V around the city and shoot lightning bolts from afar. I’m pretty sure that giant creature punching an identically giant creature is Nightmare, V’s third friend, who can also shoot beams of light at approaching enemies.

That doesn’t mean V won’t get his own hands dirty. In some footage from IGN, we see V quite rudely gut-stabbing a demon with his cane, and walking a tightrope made of dark energy. V uses the cane to finish enemies off. When an enemy enters a near-death state V can teleport forward and execute them with the cane for lots of style points.

The Bloody Palace also makes a return, and will let players use a single life to defeat as many enemies and bosses as possible as they climb the structure. The first game had 101 floors, but DMC 2 and 3 had an incredible 9,999 floors, so it’s anyone’s guess how far DMC 5 will go. The Bloody Palace will come after release day as a free update.

DMC 5 will also feature a photo mode and, finally, a training mode, something that fans have been requesting for years. In a PAX West 2018 panel, producer Michiteru Okabe said “[a training mode] is something people have been asking for for a long time, and so we've tried our best. There were certain titles where we weren't able to get that done correctly, but this time we made sure to make the effort and there's going to be a training mode."

Devil May Cry 5 multiplayer

"Multiplayer" may be a strong word for the cameo system. Devil May Cry 5 is a singleplayer game to be sure, but evidently there will be some portions where you can witness other players as V, Dante, or Nero duking it out with demons. Even better, you can join forces and then later rank your new friends on their stylishness. Do well enough and Capcom says you can earn some gold orbs. 

Devil May Cry 5 microtransactions

It won’t be the first time it’s happened in the series, but DMC 5 will have microtransactions. Players can use real money to purchase red orbs, which can be traded for skill upgrades and weapons. 

"With giving people the ability to purchase Red Orbs, it’s something we want to give people as an option,” DMC 5 director Hideaki Itsuno told GameSpot. “If they want to save time and just want to get all the stuff at once, those people can do that. But on the other hand I don’t feel you have to get all the moves, " he said. "You should be able to play it the way you want to play it."

This will be the first DMC game to have microtransactions built into the game from the start, whereas Devil May Cry 4 had them implemented after the game released.

There’s still plenty of time left to upgrade your PC if you need to, but these requirements don’t strike us as particularly demanding.
