Kratos and son are PC-bound.

In 2020, Horizon Zero Dawn became the first big, first-party Sony exclusive to launch on PC. It was a big moment for PC gaming, a sign that there might come a time when other beloved Sony exclusives, like Bloodborne and The Last of Us 2, are available outside the PlayStation, with all the perks PC gaming has to offer. Behind Bloodborne, God of War may be the most sought-after PC port from Sony's lineup, and now it's happening: Sony confirmed a PC port is in the works for early 2022.

Sony announced the port with some welcome features and enhancements, including 21:9 and Nvidia DLSS support. Here's what we know about God of War on PC.

When is God of War's PC launch?

God of War will be available on Steam on January 14, 2022. Now that's a proper welcome for the new year! It's launching at $49.99.

Here's the trailer for God of War on PC

God of War's PC port sounds promising

God of War looked amazing for a PlayStation 4 game when it released, and still made for an impressive showpiece when its PS5 upgrade added 4K 60 fps support. Naturally, that'll be an option on PC, too.

Here are the specs Sony has quoted so far:

  • Unlocked framerate
  • "Enhanced" high fidelity graphics: higher resolution shadows, improved screen space reflections, the addition of GTAO and SSDO, and "much more"
  • Nvidia DLSS and Nvidia Reflex
  • Built-in support for DualShock 4 and DualSense controllers
  • Ultrawide 21:9 support

Seems like a good time to catch up on those older God of War games now, huh?

If you count Sony's PlayStation Now streaming service, you can actually play the entire God of War series (except a couple mobile/web tie-ins) on PC right now. Here's the selection of God of War games available on PlayStation Now:

  • God of War HD
  • God of War II HD
  • God of War Remastered
  • God of War: Ascension
  • God of War: Chains of Olympus
  • God of War: Ghosts of Sparta

Not familiar with PlayStation Now? It's a cloud-based streaming subscription service, a bit like GeForce Now or Google Stadia, that lets you stream PlayStation games to a console or PC. PlayStation Now costs $10 per month (or $60 for a year). When we tried the PC client for PlayStation Now back in 2016, we found its performance good enough, even without a fast internet connection. Latency wasn't much of an issue, but video quality wasn't exactly great, either.

But that was in 2016. Our colleagues at Techradar say PSNow has "vastly improved since launch," but without a rock solid internet connection, you might run into some issues. Some God of War PC ports sure could solve that problem.

Wes has been covering games and hardware for more than 10 years, first at tech sites like The Wirecutter and Tested before joining the PC Gamer team in 2014. Wes plays a little bit of everything, but he'll always jump at the chance to cover emulation and Japanese games. When he's not obsessively optimizing and re-optimizing a tangle of conveyor belts in Satisfactory (it's really becoming a problem), he's probably playing a 20-year-old RPG or some opaque ASCII roguelike. With a focus on writing and editing features, he seeks out personal stories and in-depth histories from the corners of PC gaming and its niche communities. 50% pizza by volume (deep dish, to be specific).
