Quake Live is a seriously beautiful game. The fluidity, the colours, the mindboggling levels of skill it can accommodate... it's easy to forget its appeal until you see the game in action. There's also a certain '90s nostalgia attached to the series as a whole, which is compounded by the Moby-esque music playing over this launch trailer. Take a look below.
The Great Steamworks Migration continues. This time, it's Borderlands. The shoot-'n-loot FPS's co-op multiplayer has been unavailable since Gamespy's demise. Now it's back, thanks to the introduction of the Steamworks multiplayer infrastructure.
The last thing I played at PAX earlier this month was Due Process, a tactical FPS in development by Seattle-based Giant Enemy Crab. Though it's very much in a primordial state (pre-alpha, by the dev team's description), Due Process ended up as one of my highlights from the show simply because it's exciting to see an indie team explore a genre that's typically reserved for big studios.

The final piece of Battlefield 4 DLC has been revealed. It's called Final Stand, a trip to the blustery north of Russia packed with futuristic weaponry including a powerful rail gun and a prototype hovertank.
Playing a competitive online game means being subjected to a certain amount of unsolicited criticism. I think you receive a bit more of it in CS:GO, though, because your dead teammates form a kind of peanut gallery who can talk to you from beyond the grave. Being the last one alive as four other players hover over your digital shoulder is a quintessential CS experience.
I’ve been that digital shoulder hundreds of times, struggling to clutch while a person I’ve never met tells me which gun I should grab to retake Nuke’s A bombsite, or chastises me for using a grenade in a one-on-one situation. It’s annoying, but I’m actually grateful for a lot of the harsh feedback that’s been handed to me in these moments because it’s shaken me out of some bad habits.
Robbing banks can be a delicate process. As anyone familiar with PayDay 2 will know, it's often wiser (and more satisfying) to lay careful plans and quietly infiltrate. Of course, quietly infiltrating can get annoying after a while. Sometimes you just want to shoot something in the face with a huge rifle. Overkill Software knows this, so they've just announced a new PayDay 2 DLC pack themed around making as much noise, and inflicting as much pain, as possible.
What do you call a game of Titanfall without any titans? It's a question worthy of Bishop Berkeley, who was quite the fan of mech-based multiplayer shooters, as you may recall. Whatever you call it—'Fall', maybe?—Titanfall sans titans is now a thing, at least in the game's new Pilot Skirmish mode, added today. Wonderfully, Update 6 also adds colourblind options and new burn cards to Respawn's game, while removing the penalties for joining a match late.
We've had a few opportunities to play Evolve this year, but not since the game's delay from its original October release date. I caught up with Chris Ashton and Phil Robb from Turtle Rock to ask them what the delay's allowing them to do, what modes or monsters we might see added to the game next, and whether moddability on PC is out of the question.

Metro 2033 Redux hit Steam on Tuesday, and developer 4A Games is still improving how it looks. A 1.2GB day-one patch added volumetric lighting to a few specific scenes in the game. This isn't a dramatic overhaul of Metro 2033 Redux’s entire lighting engine: we compared the patched version of Redux to footage we’d previously captured, and noted that most scenes in the game and most light sources looked identical pre- and post-patch. The changes 4A Games have made, though, are striking.

In advance of Quake Live's debut on Steam, the game has undergone a major update that changes some fairly fundamental aspects of play. Players may now choose which primary and secondary weapons they spawn with, visual item timers have been added and an automated form of strafe-jumping has been implemented. The changes are all intended to make the game more welcoming to newcomers, and as you might predict, not everyone is happy about them.
CS:GO’s competitive mode is where serious, hardcore Counter-Strike players congregate to test their aim and strategic smarts in a best-of-30, five-on-five format. There’s a lot on the line: your pride, your matchmaking rank, your kill-death ratio. One does not simply agree to put down their guns and agree to 45 minutes of playful knife-fighting: it’s hard enough to wrangle the tactics of your own team, let alone negotiate a no-guns treaty with five other online strangers who want to kill you.
Do you remember that bit in Call of Duty? You know the one I mean. You were a guy—a war guy—and you ran around a corner to find another war guy running in the opposite direction. Yes! This was your moment. Your raised your RDS and sprayed hot 5.56mm NATO into his exposed back, earning you a hundred points, a kill, and a little shot of dopamine. Then, disaster! Another war guy ran around the corner behind you; the screen turned red; you died. Do you remember that bit? You must do, because it happened to everybody, everywhere, every day for the last seven years.
Augmentations activated. We took a break from playing today's most graphically demanding games on the Large Pixel Collider to run one of our favorites: the original Deus Ex. This isn't Deus Ex as it looked in 2000, though—this is Deus Ex running at 1440p, running the latest version of the New Vision mod. The ESL One Cologne 2014 CS:GO championship went down as the most-watched Counter-Strike event in history, with over 400,000 combined viewers watching live in-game or through the ESL stream over the weekend. There were plenty of memorable frags, clutches, and comebacks during the 16-team, four-day event, the best of which I’ve collected here.
The group stage of the ESL One Cologne 2014 just wrapped up today, whittling down the beginning 16 teams to an elite eight. We've already had two incredible matches out of Group D, and both have featured American team Cloud9, which faced Titan (France) and Team Dignitas (Denmark) as an underdog.
Competitive Counter-Strike continues to draw a healthy amount of spectators as Valve’s FPS has grown significantly since the end of 2013. Following Katowice earlier this year, the ESL Championship begins 3 AM Eastern on Thursday, the first matches of ESL One Cologne 2014 will kick off in Germany, culminating in a final match on Sunday.
EA's Battlefield games, generally speaking, aren't known for the strength of their single-player campaigns, and Battlefield Hardline looked set to stick to that tradition when it was first revealed as a multiplayer cops-and-robbers blast-fest. But EA seems determined to make single-player a relevant part of the experience, and the 12 minutes gameplay trailer released today suggests that it might actually be able to pull it off.
After nearly five years spent developing social and mobile games with his studio Loot Drop, John Romero has let slip that he's working on a fully-fledged shooter. Speaking on the Super Joystiq Podcast, Romero said that he's working on "several" games at the moment, with one of them to release under the Romero Games handle, rather than Loot Drop.
