Early Access Report: Infinite Space 3: Sea of Stars, Glitchspace and Tabletop Simulator

I'm in the strange position of absolutely loving two of the games in this round-up, but not recommending them. There's either not enough content or there's a few issues that I can see past into the game behind, but right now are in the way of the enjoyment. It helps that with one—Infinite Space III: Sea of Stars—I've played the previous games and know they're capable of incredible, delightful things. Glitchspace works very well, but couldn't be more empty. The surprise to me is how well Tabletop Simulator works.

This week's report represents a spread of the type of games you find on Early Access: NomNom Galaxy is mechanically promising, but needing polish; Running With Rifles is already a good game and will just expand on the service; and Carmageddon: Reincarnation is on there despite needing more bodywork. It would't pass its MOT.

Major sports are juggernauts and tend to not change all that much. That's probably why rugby hasn't replaced the ball with an angry goose, and why darts haven't instigated see-saws, despite my many emails. We need /real/ games for that (nor real real games - there's a difference), and this time on Early Access I've played alternative takes on American Football, Golf, and Running* in Frozen Endzone, Vertiginous Golf, and Melody's Escape.

Early Access was always going to have a large number of games 'inspired' by classics. Developers everywhere are thinking: "A lone-man - probably in his pants - made the PC's fourth biggest game? So can I..." And then trousers are discarded and coding starts. Two Early Access games clearly have origin stories entwined with Minecraft: FortressCraft Evolved is the most obvious 're-interpretation' of the game I've ever played, while Signs of Life at least has the confidence to strike out on its own, in a 2D block-built world. Finally, there's Arcane Worlds, which wants you all to remember Magic Carpet. Are you remembering?

This week Early Access brought me to the shores of Divinity: Original Sin, an RPG that's so promising that it pains me that I've walked its sandy beaches before it's complete. I left those shores on the good ship Pixel Piracy, which is a fine example of a cute Early Access title. Wrapping up, I crashed my boat into the half-formed island of Final Rush, and found unfriendly robots in a game that needs a few more updates to justify itself. Sails up. Onwards!

The Early Access report: DayZ, Rust and 7 Days to Die

This week Craig goes full Bear Grylls, and throws himself into three different sandbox survival games, DayZ, Rust and 7 Days to Die.

DayZ's arrival on Steam Early Access was the most prominent and most talked about of the people-vs-people-vs-environment releases, but it wasn't the first. Just a week before it came out, Facepunch (of Garry's Mod fame and fortune) released Rust, a DayZish game focusing on crafting yourself up from a sort of pre-industrial spawnee to a land-camping hermit. And just a few days before that, 7 Days To Die landed, bringing with it all the technical panache of an animated gif of a PS1 game. I've spent lots of time scrounging for survival in all three, but are any worth supporting on Early Access?
