Blizzard's long-awaited follow-up to Diablo II made a number of controversial design decisions, including the removal of offline play and the addition of an online auction house that allows you to buy (and sell) powerful in-game weaponry with real money, negating the need to discover it for yourself. Annoyingly it's also a phenomenally good, immediately fun action-RPG, honed by years of refinement.

As you'd expect whenever the letters D, R and M are mentioned in close proximity, there was a bit of a fan backlash to Diablo 3's ridiculous always-online requirement, which will hopefully cause Blizzard to reconsider their stance for future games in the series.

It's a changed game, but it's never been such spectacular fun to play, or so creative to tinker with.
