Ultra Street Fighter IV beta update available, opt-in to help Capcom fix their game

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about Super/Ultra/Mega Hyper Duper Street Fighter IV, and how the online situation is a bit of a mess since Capcom ditched Games for Windows Live for Steamworks. Capcom said they were working on fixes, and now they've applied some in a new beta version of Ultra SFIV available on Steam. This forum post has details on how to opt-in.

There have been three versions of Street Fighter IV on Steam: vanilla SFIV, Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition, and now Ultra Street Fighter IV, which is a $15 / £12 upgrade from SSFIV:AE. Capcom’s business model is obviously outdated. Being outdated is sort of Street Fighter’s thing.

Games for Windows Live is the gift that keeps on giving. First it was dead, then it was not dead, and now it's causing trouble from beyond the hypothetical grave in Capcom's Super/Ultra Street Fighter IV. Capcom announced that they were making the transition from GfWL to Steamworks a couple of months ago, and now that's it's happened all sorts of connection and lag problems are occurring. Ultra SFIV's Steam forums page is awash with posts detailing a cornucopia of issues, which mostly appear to be related to the game's netcode.

With Ultra Street Fighter 4 smashing its way onto the PC sometime early next year, key changes to the next iteration of the venerable fighting game series are starting to be surface. Capcom is altering the game’s battle system with some tweaks to combos as well as working to eliminate the chance of landing a so-called unblockable attack on an opponent.

Ultra-kill! The ultra in question being Ultra Street Fighter 4, Capcom's most superlatively titled version of the game to date. The kill? Games for Windows Live, which has again been sent flying from a series in a slow motion KO arc. The removal of the unpopular service was confirmed, via Twitter, by Neidel “Haunts” Crisan, an employee at Capcom.

At last weekend's EVO 2013 event, Capcom announced the next stage of their endlessly iterative fighting series, Ultra Street Fighter IV; planned as a DLC upgrade to the existing word jumble that is Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition. It will add the returning characters Elena, Rolento, Hugo, and Poison - who to my untrained eyes are possibly the line up of an '80s New Wave band - along with a fifth mystery pugilist.
