Banished photo essay: 25 years of farming and surviving harsh winters

The town of Dolothia was established when five families were unceremoniously banished from a nearby nation. The exact circumstances of this banishment were never explained to me, and I didn’t press the issue.

After The PCG Herald heard about the town’s struggle to survive in the wilderness, I was dispatched as a field reporter to document its early years. What I found was a harsh reality where 10-year-olds work fields in driving rain and snow, a bad harvest kills families, and a single misstep leaves the town frozen during winter. In the end I was embedded in Dolothia for 25 years, chronicling its struggles and triumphs in photos and timelapse gifographs. This is the life of a Banished town.


Steam will allow you to report a product for malware, pornography, other reasons

It seems like Steam will soon allow you to report a product on its store page. According to a picture of a new feature posted by Steam Database, you’ll be able to report products for legal violation (using your content without permission), pornography, malware, and other reasons.


Campo Santo announces its first game: Firewatch

Campo Santo, a small San Francisco game studio composed of former Telltale, 2K Marin, and Double Fine developers, announced its first project: a first-person, single-player game called Firewatch. According to Camp Santo’s announcement, you’ll play as a man named Henry and explore the Wyoming wilderness after taking a summer job as a fire lookout.

We dream of futuristic graphics cards with chrome Hot Rod piping and names as cool as The Pixelator. In reality, future graphics cards won't be human-sized or be styled after 1950s automobiles, but they will be faster than what we're running today. More importantly, APIs like AMD's Mantle will let our computers talk directly to our graphics cards, delivering better performance through more efficient coding. And we're going to need that performance, since 4K monitors are already on the horizon. Here's our look at the 2014 GPU landscape and the future of (entirely too expensive) 4K displays.

As an old C&C fan, I do sympathise with Pocketwatch Games's micro frustration. Whatever happened to the days when speed and skill were less important than the ability to build 50 Mammoth tanks? I'm only slightly joking. It does increasingly seem that the economic-based macro game is taking a back seat, in favour of the very different excitement and strategy that is high-level soldier manipulation. As an alternative, the Monaco makers are designing [ARMADA], a game so opposed to APM that it's being designed primarily for the controller.

No, not naked people - you really have been watching too much HBO - but elephants! For a glorious few seconds you can watch them bash up soldiers like the armoured meat-sacks they are.

It used to be that wars were only fought on land, and that made everybody very sad. A full 70% of the Earth's surface is water, meaning that we just weren't making full use of the space provided to us. Luckily, boats were invented, meaning wars could spill out onto the sea. Now Eugen Systems, makers of the Cold War RTS series Wargame, have caught up to this amazingly buoyant technology. The upcoming Wargame: Red Dragon will be the first game in the series to feature naval combat. A new trailer gives a brief glimpse of how it will look.


Papers, Please and Gone Home take BAFTA Awards, Houser brothers make rare appearance for Rockstar's Fellowship

I'm not going to sugar-coat this for you: last night's BAFTA Game Awards didn't end with the PC hunched under an unbearable weight of face gold. The platform struggled against heavy hitting console match-three games, like The Last of Us, and Grand Theft Auto 5. Even so, there were awards for indie gems Papers, Please and Gone Home, and multi-platform titles like Bioshock Infinite. In addition, the reclusive Rockstar heads showed up in person to accept their BAFTA fellowship. You can find that video, and a full list of winners, inside.

Also, before the big list, be sure to check out the BAFTA Steam sale that's running until later today. There are some particularly great deals in there, like the excellent XCOM: Enemy Within for a ridiculously low £5/$7.50.


Install an Xbox One controller on PC with this driver

Four months after the launch of the console, Microsoft still hasn't released a PC driver for the Xbox One controller. Someone else has finally done it for them. With a few caveats, YouTube user Lucas Assis has uploaded video instructions and a driver that will make your Xbox One controller work with your PC. The video is 11 minutes long, so it’s not exactly a plug and play solution, but if you really like the Xbox One controller this will get it talking to your PC.

The Natural Selection 2 World Championship tournament played out in Cologne, Germany a couple of weeks ago, and the whole event was broadcast live over Twitch complete with lights, commentators, and prize money. The Elder Scrolls Online's three-way tiff over whose posterior claims the Imperial City's throne perfectly befits the franchise's massive lore background. To join in, though, players will need to pay a subscription fee on top of purchasing the disc or downloading the upcoming MMO. Producer Bethesda and developer ZeniMax have both come out in defense of that debatable decision. They argue they can provide heavier content thanks to a bigger budget, but it's still an interesting choice given the rise of free-to-play gaming. Speaking to GameSpot, Bethesda Vice President of PR Pete Hines claims a monthly fee exists to help bolster ESO with richer, "significant" content updates.

Much like Tortchlight, The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing was an enjoyable and affordable action role-playing game, which found an audience with players looking for something similar to Diablo. That’s how I found it (and loved it), so I’m pretty excited that Neocore announced that The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing II will hit Steam on April 17 for $15. If you just can’t wait another minute, you can pre-purchase the game on Neocore's site to gain access to the closed beta, which, now that we’re so close to release, must be pretty close to the final product.

By now, we're completely familiar with the basics of crafting games. You hit a tree until it becomes tree parts, then use the tree parts to build wooden things. You smash a rock until it becomes ore, then smelt the ore to build metal things. You meet a half-naked guy named Batman, and he follows you around for ten minutes eerily moaning, "Take me to your house. Show me your house. Show me your houuuuuse." Actually, that last part might not be common to crafting games. But Batman's weirdness is not that unusual in Rust, the early-access crafting survival game from Facepunch Studios.

Blizzard announced you can now purchase a level 90 character boost in World of Warcraft for $60, confirming the price that leaked out last month. It’s the same boost you’ll get with a purchase of the latest World of Warcraft expansion, Warlords of Draenor, which Blizzard will sell for $50 (Standard Edition) or $70 (Digital Deluxe Edition).

With Titanfall jettisoning the idea of a traditional single-player mode and Battlefield 4’s campaign inducing widespread sighs, this has become a disposable bolt on to most of today’s big shooters. Titanfall is able to create much of the drama of a single-player game in the midst of its impressive systems, but it’s worth remembering that the old Infinity Ward were really good at making campaigns, too.
