CS:GO’s competitive mode is where serious, hardcore Counter-Strike players congregate to test their aim and strategic smarts in a best-of-30, five-on-five format. There’s a lot on the line: your pride, your matchmaking rank, your kill-death ratio. One does not simply agree to put down their guns and agree to 45 minutes of playful knife-fighting: it’s hard enough to wrangle the tactics of your own team, let alone negotiate a no-guns treaty with five other online strangers who want to kill you.

The ESL One Cologne 2014 CS:GO championship went down as the most-watched Counter-Strike event in history, with over 400,000 combined viewers watching live in-game or through the ESL stream over the weekend. There were plenty of memorable frags, clutches, and comebacks during the 16-team, four-day event, the best of which I’ve collected here.

Ubisoft showed some new footage of Far Cry 4 at Gamescom 2014, highlighting the world of Kyrat that players will explore. The new trailer looks at three distinctly different areas from the game, from jungle wildlands to snowy mountaintops and a spiritual retreat.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare's multiplayer mode was revealed at Gamescom today, with developer Sledgehammer showing how the focus on future technology will change traditional CoD multiplayer with increased verticality, dynamic map elements, and intricate soldier customization.


Unreal Tournament's CTF mode tweaked for better e-sports presentation

Changes to Unreal Tournament's CTF mode have so far proved "quite controversial," according to Senior Gameplay Programmer Joe Wilcox, who says in the latest Unreal Tournament Project Update video that the implementation of halftime, overtime and sudden death are just "the very beginning" of an effort intended to make the game "more friendly to a viewing audience."


Lovely Planet gets global leaderboards, publisher defends low price

In my review of Lovely Planet, I criticized it for not including global leaderboards outside of one nameless world record per level. It just makes sense that a game built for speedrunning would show off the best speedrunners—and with today's update, it now does. And now that I can etch my name on a bragging wall, I have to replay every level 100 times to make sure my name is in the top 15.

I feel like someone’s expendable RTS unit as I dart through a muddy maze of trenches. My only goal right now is pathfinding: trudge from cover to cover on my way to the French line as they pelt the no man’s land between us. Trying to pick off entrenched riflemen might help a little, but I have to get into the trench to take it. I get into the trench, and get shot in the face.


Metrocide interview: "there's so much fun to be had in a dystopia"

Metrocide is a forthcoming top-down stealth shooter developed by Sydney studio Flat Earth Games. The team, made up of brothers Leigh and Rohan Harris, is best known for the whimsical survival game Towncraft. Metrocide is entirely different: lush greens have been replaced with cyberpunk chromes, while instead of chopping down trees you'll be murdering in cold blood.


Lovely Planet review

I’ve criticized games for making me memorize every level. I rarely find it more fun than solving problems on the fly, or with premeditated strategy. There are a few special games, though, that loop past that criticism, wind through furious delirium, and land among my favorites. Super Meat Boy is one, Hotline Miami is another, and Lovely Planet now joins them. It’s not quite of the same caliber, but it’s fantastic.


Interview: Cliff Bleszinski on Project BlueStreak, PC gaming, FPS design, moddability

Earlier this month Cliff Bleszinski revealed his next project: a free-to-play, PC-focused arena shooter called Project BlueStreak created by Boss Key Productions, his new studio. Following a Reddit AMA that answered some surface-level questions about the game, I spoke with Bleszinski about what sort of shooter he’s hoping to create.


Warframe update 14.0 adds new class, quests, modes and new pets

It is not unreasonable to want pets in violent third-person shooter video games. The team at Digital Extremes doesn't think so, as the new (and rather major) Warframe update includes pets, as well as other substantial additions. These include a better opening tutorial and user interface, a whole new Warframe class, new modes and quests galore.


Rainbow Six Siege live gameplay stream set for Thursday on Twitch, E3 trailer out now

Rainbow Six Siege was a surprise hit for Ubisoft at E3—perhaps the biggest surprise of the show. For those who missed the excitement the first time around, an "E3 Awards" trailer filled with all sorts of nice quotes and a few bits of unfamiliar footage is now out on YouTube, and Ubisoft Montreal will be hosting a live gameplay session Thursday on Twitch.

Battlefield Hardline "Community's Most Wanted" lists ten more changes in the works

It's not often that "fewer explosions" tops a game studio's to-do list, especially when the game in question is something like Battlefield Hardline. But it's number one on the latest edition of the "Community's Most Wanted" list of changes Electronic Arts and Visceral is making to the game.


Firefall finally leaving beta this month, adding open world PvP in its "biggest update ever"

Firefall was first shown to the public way back in 2010, but nearly four years later, it still hasn't officially released. The free-to-play MMO shooter has been in open beta for the past year—almost to the day—which in many cases is the same as being 'released' in all but name, but not in this case, according to Red 5 Studios CEO James Macauley. This month's launch won't just pull down the 'open beta' label, it's also Firefall's "biggest update ever."


Super Time Force Ultra headed to Steam this season

Super Time Force will throw off the shackles of Xbox exclusivity soon and make its way to Steam. The sidescrolling shooter will release for PC this "summer" (or winter in Australia) in an Ultra edition, which developers Capybara Games says will add "some very cool (but presently very secret) stuff".


Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare review

Sprawling battlescapes, the clatter of small arms, thunderous mortar fire—all things we expect from our Call of Dutys and Battlefields, not so much from developer PopCap, creators of Bejeweled and Peggle. Not only does Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare deliver the grandiose spectacle of combat endemic to its blockbuster cousins, it manages to take the same game modes, upgrade tracks, and classes we’re familiar with and do something truly novel for the genre—make them feel fresh.


Punkbuster false positives leading to Battlefield 3 bans; EA is investigating

Punkbuster, for those just joining the eternal online fray, is software that detects cheaters—punks—and then deals with them appropriately via "busting." It's widely used, although its popularity has waned in recent years. It's also automated, which means things can occasionally go wrong. And it appears that things have gone very wrong recently for some Battlefield 3 players, who have been locked out of the game they love through no fault of their own.

I keep seeing Battlefield Hardline derided as a "reskin," and though I'm not fond of the direction we've seen so far, I wonder if that's fair. If not a new theme and new weapons, gadgets, vehicles, modes, and maps, what is it to be a proper sequel? Does a sequel necessarily include significant graphical improvements? Is that a reasonable expectation today?

Team Fortress 2 'Love and War' day two brings new weapons and bread-themed attacks

This week’s mysterious Team Fortress 2 ‘Love & War’ campaign has so far spawned a fifteen minute movie and a handful of new emotes, but Valve has gone further today with the announcement of a huge drop of new weapons and items. Among the lucre is a new level 1 Scattergun called The Back Scatter, a level 1 Shield dubbed The Tide Turner and a new parachute called The B.A.S.E. Jumper which slows your descent when falling.

Rainbow Six Siege was our favorite game at E3. The promise of a Rainbow reboot centered around competitive multiplayer and high-fidelity destruction captured our tactical imaginations, but Ubisoft’s narrow, one-level demo left us with a ton of unanswered questions. How does destruction work? Would it be moddable? Can hostages move on their own? What form will co-op take?
