Rainbow 6 Patriots lead devs get replaced. "We're evolving the vision," says Ubisoft

As reported on Game Informer, Ubisoft have made dramatic changes to the Rainbow 6: Patriots development team. Lead designer, David Sears, has been replaced by Jean-Sebastien Decant, who was previously lead on Driver: San Francisco. Ubisoft Montreal have moved David on to another "major project for a major brand."

"Another opportunity arose that was a really good fit, and I am more than delighted to contribute to that," Sears said.

Narrative director Richard Rouse III, lead designer Philippe Therien, and animation director Brent George have also been removed from Ubisoft’s game. The restructuring hints that the series is going in a different direction, but Ubisoft Montreal CEO Yannis Mallat says that’s not the case: "We're definitely going on with Rainbow, evolving the vision that came from David's initial input," he said.

Rainbow Six Patriots trailer talks bailouts, shows bombs

With a vaguely zeitgeisty spiel about home foreclosures and bailouts, domestic terrorist organisation, The Patriots, vigorously wave the "we're evil" flag by throwing a bomb-laden man out of a window to be detonated among the civilians far below. Judging from this bit of CGI and the previous trailer, throwing innocent people from a great height and then exploding them is going to be a recurring theme in Rainbow Six: Patriots. Edgy!

Though there's still no in-game footage, few solid details, and it's due out in 2013, Rainbow 6: Patriots is already available to Pre-order on the Ubisoft shop.

Rainbow 6 Patriots to use Assassin's Creed Anvil engine, new concept art rappels in

The "proof of concept" video above introduced us to the newly announced Rainbow 6 Patriots a few weeks ago. Now, there's some concept art and new info to go with it. Ubisoft say that the story of the battle against the domestic terrorist group, The Patriots, will be told from multiple perspectives. Team Rainbow will "wrestle with difficult ethical decisions" and employ a "doing whatever it takes mentality" to take the ultranationalist group down.

Luckily, "whatever it takes" should involve attaching yourself to a rappel cord and jumping off bridge struts shouting "wheeee!" a lot. That's according to the concept art, at least. See the new images below.

Rainbow 6: Patriots trailer casts player as victim and soldier, features awesome rappelling

Trailers have evolved, and so has the the new Rainbow 6: Patriots trailer. It's made up of "proof of concept" footage designed to give us an idea of the final product the devs are aiming for. First person story sections with quicktime prompts make up the bulk of it, containing strong overtones of PS3 detective drama, Heavy Rain.

The moments in which you rappel down the side of the building and stalk from cover to cover to reach the endangered civilian feels the most like Rainbow 6: Vegas and Vegas 2, but it looks as though Rainbow 6: Patriots (Heavy Rainbow?) will take a more story-driven approach. What do you think?

Rainbow 6 Patriots announced: "Terrorism has evolved, and so has Rainbow 6"

Ubisoft have just announced Rainbow 6 Patriots - the next game in the successful tactical FPS series. It's being developed by Ubisoft Montreal with the support of Ubisoft Toronto and Ubisoft Red Storm, and will arrive on PC in 2013. The single player campaign will pit Team Rainbow (goodies) against the True Patriots (baddies). The latter are a revolutionist group who claim the American government is irrevocably corrupted by greedy politicians. So far, so Clancy.
