Unreal Tournament interview: on transparent development, the best UT guns and "pure, fast action"

Epic recently announced that they're making a new free Unreal Tournament game in collaboration with the UT community. This is good news. We like Unreal Tournament. Titanfall Expedition trailer shows new maps in action

New Titanfall maps are a good thing. We've read a lot about the design decisions behind each of the three maps in Expedition, the game's first DLC pack, but we haven't had a glimpse of the levels until action. Titanfall's newest trailer finally gives us that, as well as a reminder of why the mechtastic competitive shooter was so fun in the first place.


Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare dev almost made a third-person Vietnam spinoff

Sledgehammer Games' upcoming Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is pretty ambitious. It imagines what the realistic future of military combat will be—exoskeletons, private military, and even bigger explosions all seem likely. We also know that the future of military warfare will involve Kevin Spacey, which is nice. It's a logical leap for Sledgehammer, since a lot of its team previously worked on the Dead Space sci-fi horror series. But according to Game Informer, the team's first CoD game was quite different than what's been revealed: it was almost a third-person shooter in Vietnam.


Battlefield 4 gets superservers to fight latency issues

"High-performance servers" are the latest weapon DICE are throwing at Battlefield 4 to knock it into shape. They hope that it'll reduce instances of rubber banding—when players appear to be running in
one direction, but are teleported back a few steps thanks to a high-latency server hiccup. It's a very frustrating phenomenon in a reflex shooter when every player hop can ruin a perfectly good shot.


Minimum rescued from limbo by Atari and Human Head, heading for Steam Early Access soon

Blocky multiplayer shooter Minimum was announced this time last year, and now it's been re-announced under new development and publishing teams. The reason for this is that original developers TimeGate (infamous for co-developing the execrable Aliens: Colonial Marines) filed for bankruptcy shortly after the game's announcement, leaving it stranded in a sort of cubey limbo. Now it's back, and it's heading for Steam Early Access, under former Prey 2 developers Human Head.


Titanfall director details roadmap for post-launch updates

In his Titanfall review, Chris questioned how much staying power the mech-tastic shooter would have. It's a legitimate concern—online shooters can be heavily populated the first week, but if your fellow players move on, there won't be anyone left to shoot but bots. Luckily, we're not the only ones worried about the game's lasting appeal. Respawn Game Director Steve Fukuda today published a roadmap of further changes and content to keep Titanfall stomping through the coming months.


Titanfall's first DLC pack, Expedition, due in May, along with free burn cards and modes

Prepare for (more) Titanfall, as Respawn have just announced at PAX East that the game's first DLC map pack will land in May. Expedition comprises three new maps: Swampland, a bunch of marshy alien ruins with trees you can wallrun on, Runoff, which swaps swamps for water and trees for giant pipes, and War Games, which takes place in Titanfall's training simulator and NOT within a classic Matthew Broderick film. Expedition will set you back $10, unless you bought the season pass, in which case you've already paid in advance. Respawn also announced some free mini-updates, including new modes and Titan-flavoured burn cards.


Call of Duty: Ghosts Devastation pack includes alien kraken and The Predator

The Devastation map pack for Call of Duty: Ghosts will include four multiplayer maps and part two of the increasingly mad Extinction mode. The co-op players vs. NPC aliens aside is set on a "high-tech ghost ship" besieged by a "skyscraper-sized" sea monster and infested with dog-like alien creatures. The trailer also teases the inclusion of the Predator. The actual Predator, from the films. I haven't paid attention to Call of Duty in a while, so it feels like returning to a familiar old house I thought I knew, to find it full of dinosaurs.


Titanfall's future game modes will be free, Zampella confirms

With Titanfall now out (and good), the Respawn team are working on the next updates for their pilot-'n-robot buddy war game. Some of those updates will form DLC, but not all of the planned future content will be hiding behind a paid mini-pack. Last night, Respawn co-founder Vince Zampella confirmed that future multiplayer modes will be released for free, and not tied up as part of expansions.

With Titanfall jettisoning the idea of a traditional single-player mode and Battlefield 4’s campaign inducing widespread sighs, this has become a disposable bolt on to most of today’s big shooters. Titanfall is able to create much of the drama of a single-player game in the midst of its impressive systems, but it’s worth remembering that the old Infinity Ward were really good at making campaigns, too.

But it might be that Titanfall’s lack of a true single-player mode is a sign of the times: COD’s rigid campaign formula has been exhausted. Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was its peak

Battlefield 4 Platoons roll out on February 27

DICE announced today that it will finally begin rolling out Battlefield 4’s Platoons feature on February 27. Similar to the feature in Battlefield 3, BF4's platoons will allow you to create (if you have a high enough rank) or join clans of up to 100 members, and coordinate battles for you and your teammates.


Titanfall may feature NPC monsters, according to official art book

A look inside the new Art of Titanfall book, received today by PC Gamer, reveals that the finished game may include NPC animals that add to the chaos of the battlefield. Some animals “will walk or fly around levels harmlessly until people interfere. Others will attack when you just stare at them.” Our own Cory Banks snapped a few photos of the creature concept art.


Titanfall beta signups are now live

EA and Respawn have opened up registration for Titanfall's beta. The robotic multiplayer shooter, out on March 11, is the first game from Respawn Entertainment, and its beta will be your first chance to try one of our most anticipated games of the year.


Call of Duty switches to 3-year development cycle, next game from Sledgehammer

Activision's quarterly earnings call was yesterday and—to no one's surprise—the company made a lot of money. $1.5 billion in net revenues to be exact. A lot of that money was made with the Call of Duty games, which, according the Activision's calculations and the NPD, was the number one franchise in retail in North America in 2013. As you may have noticed, there's a new Call of Duty game every year, which may be part of the reason why we've grown weary of it. Activision announced that while it will keep to that relentless schedule, it will give the games' developers three years to work on each title as opposed to two.


Latest Call of Duty: Ghosts patch focuses on eSports

Just because we weren't the biggest fans of Call of Duty: Ghosts doesn't mean it isn't still immensely popular. It has a huge, highly competitive following, big enough to serve as a primary attraction to Major League Gaming's eSports streaming service, MLG.TV. Those players care passionately about details in the game the average player won't even notice, which would explain why Infinity Ward's latest update focuses on eSports and balancing.


What we want from Borderlands 3

Borderlands was one of the best games to come out of 2012, and you might recall that we'd picked it as an Editor's Choice at the time. But even the best games can be improved. The last we heard of a third Borderlands was Randy Pitchford's downer of a tweet back in October 2012, when he claimed that the series' third entry wasn't in development. Sixteen months is plenty of time to start developing a new game, however, and with that in mind, here's our list of what we'd like to see if Borderlands 3 shows its face soon.


Battlefield 4 getting tweaks to infantry weapons, including shotguns and DMRs

Funny fact: Battlefield 4 has a lot of guns. You wouldn't think that were the case in multiplayer, as the majority of BF4 players have tended to prefer a few all-around beastly weapons—the Assault's M4A1 or the Engineer's MTAR-21, as examples—that sadly diminishes the chances of seeing more specialized firepower during a match. In a Battlefield Blog post today, DICE outlines some of the upcoming changes to footsoldier weapons as an effort to boost the variance of gun popularity and choice for players.


Duke Nukem 3D adds multiplayer, co-op modes on Steam

Grab your 56 kbps modems and triple-barreled machine guns. Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition has just been updated with multiplayer and cooperative modes. The Megaton Edition, which includes the original game and three expansion packs, is also discounted by 60 percent on Steam until Friday, down to $4.
