Lord of the Rings: War in the North

Lord of the Rings: War in the North trailer battles the Barrow Wight Lord

Barrow Wights, those bastards. Always possessing Rangers and turning them against their former brothers. When investigating the barrows, be on the look out for the telltale signs that your friends aren't entirely of their own mind. Are their eyes glowing green? Is there a monstrous apparition lurking just over their shoulder? Have they suddenly started arguing that Return of the King is the best of the trilogy when it's clearly Fellowship of the Ring? If the answer to any of these is yes, stab first and ask questions later.

The trailer up there for co-op action RPG Lord of the Rings: War in the North shows us exactly how those undead cretins should be dealt with. Ie. a stern telling off followed by a firm ass kicking using one or all of the ranger, melee and magical variants that make up War in the North's mini-fellowship. All three are playable in co-op, too, so you'll be able to lunge into every combat shouting "YOU HAVE MY AXE" with every slash until your friends disown you forever. War in the North is out on November 1 in the US, November 25 in Europe and sometime towards the end of The Third Age in Middle Earth.

E3 2011: Lord of the Rings: War in the North trailer pits Great Eagle vs. an ogre

The new Lord of the Rings: War in the North trailer gives us a good look at the fourth member of the co-op fellowship. It's a great eagle called Beleram. He's not directly playable, but can be called upon at key moments to strike your enemies from above, and by strike, I mean eat.

The best part of the trailer shows a fight between Beleram and an Ogre. I use the word 'fight' generously. Fighting suggests some semblance of competition. Beleram has just surpassed the Colossal Otter to take the top spot on my list of Brilliant Animals That Should Exist But Don't. The game's out August 24.

Funny story: PC Gamer's boss is obsessed with zombies. Completely, totally, enthralled by them. He demands, occasionally, that we stay up late and play Left 4 Dead with him, on the overclocked and overpowered rig we got for him as a 'present'. We going to leave this video on the front page of the site for a little while, just because he'll come bouncing into the office on Monday morning, demanding to know how he can play this. James - to answer your questions: it's an ArmA II mod. And yes, we do have a copy of ArmA II waiting for you. But no, we don't have a spare TrackIR hanging around. You'd look silly using one, anyway.

Kinect hacks are pretty cool. Mixing Kinect with the Source engine is a completely different deal. Check out coder John Boiles as he kicks many Dr. Kleiners across a map with DOG in Gary's Mod. There's also much box hurling, and a whole lot of ragdoll creepiness going on.

A new video has appeared for Lord of the Rings: War in the North, the upcoming co-op hack and slash adventure from Snowblind. A new developer diary has been released, showing off some of the new locations from Tolkien's writing that went unexplored in the films, including the huge steel sanctuary of Carn Dum, home of the Witch King.

When it comes to Tolkien, there are two types of people. There are people who saw the films, maybe read one or two of his books, and thought "Well, that was a ripping fantasy-type yarn." Then there are people who care. They care that Gandalf and Sauron were both Maiar, ancient and immortal beings of great power; that Orcs used to be Elves, horribly tortured by Melkor in an age before the sun was created. That stuff is part of the fun for them, just like there are WoW veterans who know and care about who Neltharion is.

Watch this ripping fantasy-type Lord of the Rings: War in the North trailer, and feel sorry for those people.
