Lord of the Rings Online's Riders of Rohan expansion has arrived. Rage at Theoden! Cry for Boromir! Laugh at Hobbits trying to ride horses! The update renders the sweeping plains of the horse lords in Lotro's biggest zones yet. If you're levelled enough, you can earn yourself a noble war horse, customise it, level it up and ride it into battle against roaming Warg bands. Or any unmounted pest that gets in your way. It doesn't matter as long as you scream "FOR ROHAN" while you're doing it.
Lord of the Rings Online: Riders of Rohan
Earlier in the week, we gave you a look at the mounted combat system coming in Lord of the Rings Online's Riders of Rohan expansion. But if horses are the most important thing to portraying the Riddermark of Tolkien's world, the second most important things has got to be fiddles. Preferably ancient Norwegian fiddles, of the sort composer Chance Thomas used in crafting the expansion's score. Check out the video inside to hear more about how the music of Rohan was created.
Hobbits are a proud but diminutive race, so plonking one on an eight foot tall battle steed is probably a good idea if you're planning to do some serious fighting. The upcoming Riders of Rohan update for Lord of the Rings Online will let us do just that. Whether mage or ranger, elf or Hobbit, everyone will get to do some war from beastback. Rich doesn't trust horses. He thinks of them as secret lizards coated in hair, so a trailer showing hobbits and wizards riding them into battle on their backs is likely to freak him out. That is one of many reasons to post this very video, spotted on VG247.
When looking over the feature list for Lord of the Rings Online's upcoming Rohan expansion, one thing in particular caught my eye. Mounted combat. An image jumped into my head. I saw a warrior riding charging towards a band of Orcs on a gleaming war steed, dismounting with mighty blows as he passed. Later, I spoke to executive producer Kate Paiz about the upcoming expansion, and discovered that this vision of jousting warriors wasn't too far from the truth.
"My sense of it is, you'll be riding across the plains, and you'll look off into the distance and you see this column of smoke and you're like "huh, I wonder what that is" and you realise that the smoke is coming closer to you, and is in fact a mounted band of Orcs sent out by Saruman to harry the villagers of Rohan," she said, "You have decide whether you're going to ride in the opposite direction, call a few friends or heedlessly charge into battle."
