This is the first time I can remember that PC gaming was mentioned at the Intel Developer Forum (IDF) without me having to remind an exec that we existed. Unprompted, Intel's Kirk Skaugen took to the stage in the main keynote proclaiming “desktop is alive and well. It's innovating, whether it's small form factors, all-in-ones, portable all-in-ones or extreme gaming.”

"There are 711 million PC gamers in the world today, that's one in ten people on the planet,” he enthused.

Is it a bird, is it a laptop, is it a desktop? No, it's MSI's GS30...er...entertainment system? At the moment it's just a pre-production sample but the bundled laptop and dock ought to allow bona fide desktop performance via a laptop. On the road, you've got a thin and light notebook and plugged in, at home you've effectively got a full desktop running from the same system.

I'm going to require a few more words, because, not only have Rockstar given us the game's PC release date, they've also revealed the new features and improvements we'll be getting over the existing PS3 and Xbox 360 edition.

The next few months are set to be dominated by RPGs—both big, and big but with a smaller, crowdfunded budget. But whatever the future holds, the genre has already had one great success this year. Divinity: Original Sin was uncompromising in its old-school design, and in being so, provided exactly what many PC RPG fans were looking for. In a new blog post, Swen Vincke, the founder of developer Larian Studios, writes about the game's success, and hints at what will come next.


The Crew trailer shows what you can do with your crew

The most striking thing about The Crew is its miniature recreation of the United States. Also, it's called The Crew, which would suggest that crews will be involved in some capacity—likely rolling around the aforementioned recreation. A new trailer confirms that they are, and shows some of the ways that your crew can operate. It also shows that Ubisoft missed a trick by not calling their trailers "Crew Cuts". Come on Ubi, this is basic stuff.


Garry's Mod has sold 6 million copies

It could only happen on PC: Garry's Mod, a seemingly pointless sandbox allowing all manner of ridiculous and perverse experimentation, has managed to sell 6 million copies. The news comes via Garry Newman himself, who managed to drag himself away from mountains of cold hard cash for long enough to Tweet the news.


Minimum exits Early Access to become feature complete game; new update detailed

At a time when disenchantment with the Steam Early Access model appears to be ramping up, it's nice to hear that blocky third-person shooter Minimum has finally been consecrated a full, feature complete game. The news comes via Human Head's Norm Nazaroff, who made the assurance that the game will still undergo "polish and improvement".

In a move already being greeted with an almighty collective sigh of relief by most Hearthstone players, Blizzard has finally swung the nerf hammer on Leeroy Jenkins. The card’s cheap cost, relative to its high damage and Charge ability, has seen it deployed as a ‘finisher’ in a multitude of decks.

If you consult horror master Clive Barker on a video game story, it turns out you get something very, very Lovecraft—but with first-person shooting and spellcasting. Clive Barker's Undying hit the PC in 2001 with a weird mix of occult psychological horror (reminiscent of the GameCube's Eternal Darkness, released the next year) and first-person combat. Barker cited Lovecraft and Poe as inspirations for the game, and that macabre fantasy atmosphere is apparent within the first five minutes of the game. Like Resident Evil, Undying begins in a mansion, but it mixes in spellcasting and an involved occult story. It still feels fresh nearly 15 years later, and you can run it on modern Windows at a high resolution thanks to GOG.

Arma 3 celebrates one-year anniversary with Zeus livestream and free stuff

Bohemia Interactive is celebrating the one-year anniversary of Arma 3 tomorrow with a livestream featuring an Arma 3 Zeus multiplayer session. As is only appropriate for any proper birthday celebration, there will also be cake, and a few gifts, too.


Microsoft buying Minecraft: Won't somebody think of the children?

The rumor that Microsoft may acquire Minecraft creator Mojang (now upgraded to a maybe), is an uncomfortable possibility. If the deal materializes, it would put a game whose spirit and mechanics are rooted in openness and tinkering in the hands of a closed, proprietary platform holder. It will put the best-selling individual PC game ever in the hands of PC gaming’s most obstructive opponent—a company responsible for timed exclusives, the closure of studios like Ensemble, and the mutant DRM known as Games For Windows Live (which continues to be purged).


Dying Light launch is going to happen sooner than expected

In an unusual and unexpected development, Techland's zombie parkour game Dying Light has been slightly un-delayed. The game was expected to come out in February 2015 but the studio announced today that it will actually be here a month earlier.

Styx: Master of Shadows trailer reveals devilish "attack of the clone"

I'll be honest: I like what I've seen so far of Styx: Master of Shadows, but my expectations aren't super-high. Its predecessor, Of Orcs and Men, didn't exactly set the world on fire, and developer Cyanide is probably best known for the Pro Cycling Manager series, a far cry from the stealth-action genre. But even if I'm not particularly optimistic, I do remain hopeful. I mean, how do you not like a goblin who can spawn a gooey clone of himself and use it to turn a chest into a wicked, murderous jack-in-the-box?

It's just that the current development kits are filled with the promise of exciting escapism—even if it is to some deeply strange places. Luckily for everyone not yet prepared to deal with the DK2's current issues, news has emerged of the planned release window of the long-awaited consumer edition.
