Gamescom 2012

Gamescom 2012 day three round-up

Owen Hill at

Gamescom 2012 is over. And I'm tired. My day has been packed with presentations, interviews, and lots of coffee. Scroll down to read the results of those things, and keep checking the site for more stories in the near future.

For the final time, James from CVG gathered Justin ‘two shoes’ Towell and to talk about our favourite moments. Click through to watch.

League of Legends dev on LoL vs. Dota 2: "we wanted to find ways to evolve that genre"

Tom Senior at

Owen's had an interesting chat with League of Legends lead champion designer Ryann Scott about Riot's character design philosophy, the reason their entire hero roster isn't free, and the differences between League of Legends and Dota 2. "Dota 2 is really true to Dota 1, that’s a lot of the appeal. But we started from day one to say that’s not what we want to be, he said "we don’t want to be just like our predecessors, we wanted to find ways to evolve that genre."

Castlevania: Lords Of Shadow 2 PC release confirmed

Rob Edwards at

Speaking at Gamescom, Konami have confirmed that Castlevania: Lords Of Shadow 2 will be coming to PC. It's being developed by the same folks building the console game, Mercury Steam.

"This new game tells a much broader tale and one that spans centuries," said producer, David Cox. "It is a game that pushes whatever format it is on to the absolute limit, and we are delighted that Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2's rich blend of first-class fighting, deep exploration and rich storytelling are set to delight and enthrall PC users, too.

Gamescom 2012 day two round-up

Owen Hill at

Day two of Gamescom is over. And a fine day it was too. I got to sample the delights of the Oculus Rift, and play the outstanding free-to-play mech shooter Hawken. We'll have footage of my Oculus Rift experience, along with an exclusive interview, on the site tomorrow.

James from CVG gathered Justin 'two shoes' Towell and I for a quick rundown of our highlights as day two drew to an end. The resulting footage is embedded below. Enjoy!

Gamescom: Dev offers $5,000 bounty for retrieval of stolen PCs

Rob Edwards at

Two thieves have pinched a pair of PCs belonging to developer Larian at Gamescom. The PCs contained early versions of Divinity: Dragon Commander and Divinity: Original Sin. Larian is offering a $5,000 reward  for anyone who comes forward to help recover the PCs and find those responsible.

This is an unfortunate development. Larian will be greatly concerned about a possible leak of their unreleased titles. Hopefully the PCs will be returned swiftly so their theft doesn't cast a shadow over this year's event - check out our roundup of day one of Gamescom 2012 here.

Planetary Annihilation interview

Rob Zacny at

Uber Entertainment’s Jon Mavor spoke with us for two hours about RTS games, his history with Total Annihilation and Supreme Commander, and his plans for Planetary Annihilation. We’ve edited that interview to highlight some of the most distinctive elements of Planetary Annihilation, and bore into greater detail about exactly how the game's ridiculous technology, scale, and design will work.

Looking for the Kickstarter? Look no further!

T.J. Hafer at

A new trailer for Planetside 2 has come thundering across the battlefield at Gamescom. And this one is all in-engine goodness, showing off everything from infantry combat to tanks to flyers to jetpacks. Strap in and check it out after the jump.

Arma 3 screenshots show massive artillery and soldier training

Tom Senior at

Look at that military man, there, with his meticulously detailed gun and authentic modern combat helmet. He's ready to shoot that tree the moment it makes any sudden moves. Evan went hands-on with Arma 3 at E3, and noted the scale and detail in the environments as one of the most apparent visual leaps between Arma 2 and the sequel. The latest screenshots from Gamescom give us a closer look at the men who'll be doing the fighting, and offers a glimpse at some menacing artillery pieces to boot.

Total War: Rome 2 screenshots show close combat on the streets of Carthage

Tom Senior at

Shakespeare knew what he was doing, which is why, when he penned the first lines of Mark Antony's most famous speech from Julius Ceaser, he didn't write "friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your eyeballs," which leaves it to me to make that demand. Come on now, your eyeballs, please. All of them.

I'll use them well, I promise. Let me just gather them all up in arms, like so, and saunter into the depths of this post, where four new screenshots for the tremendously enticing Total War: Rome 2 await.

Hitman: Absolution gets Steamworks and DX11 support: "Hitman's suit looks ten times more awesome on PC"

Tom Senior at

Owen has clubbed a guard, nabbed his clothes and wandered casually out of an IO Interactive Gamescom meeting with details of some of the PC-only features we can look forward to from Agent 47's October outing. If you have a DirectX 10 card you'll be able to enjoy increased texture and gesture resolution, better shadows, sharper visuals and more. If you have a DirectX 11 card, Absolution will look even better thanks to the integration of top level visual tricks like bokeh filtering and tessellation into IO's Glacier 2 engine. Steamworks support means we'll be able to upload our saves to the cloud and resume your campaign on any PC. Nice.

IO Interactive's Jonas Meyer headed up the presentation. He says that IO "want the game to look as awesome as possible" and promises that "Hitman's suit looks ten times more awesome on PC."

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 MP to have Diablo 3 style unlock system, guns and perks revealed

Tom Senior at

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 details have been oozing out of Gamescom. VG247 have details of an updated "build a class" mode that will let us occupy ten gear slots with any combination of weapons, perks and killstreak rewards. Levelling up will mean choosing one of seven new pieces of kit to unlock. If you want to grab the six you missed, you'll have to prestige and reset your character.

You're not restricted to having to occupy certain slots with weapons, and other slots with perks. You can forgo your primary gun in favour of an extra perk, or a "wild card" ability that changes the way your weapon behaves, adding an alternative fire mode or letting you slot an extra attachment onto your weapon. Treyarch refer to the system as "pick 10."

Half-Life 3 and Dragon Age 3 Gamescom listings "a mistake" say organisers

Tom Senior at

Everyone's been getting pretty excited this morning about the possibility of a big Half-Life 3 reveal at Gamescom. That's thanks to a pdf on the Gamescom site listing Half-Life 3 as one of the exhibits. A translation of the text at the top of the document asks readers to "Please take note of the sources: exhibitors, media, intenet forums, blogs."

Remember Me announced: memory theft and acrobatic punching in Neo-Paris

Tom Senior at

Gamescom is set to start tomorrow, but there are already new announcements, trailers, screenshots flowing out of Cologne. Capcom have taken the opportunity to announce Remember Me, a third person action adventure in which you star as spec ops martial arts expert, Nilin, a lithe fighter with the power to warp and delete memories. The old "do as you would be done by" addage has come back to bite, however, and now she's running around in the future shouting "WHO TOOK MY MEMORIES" and beating the stuffing out of everyone.

The announcement trailer shows Nilin demonstrating her running, jumping and burly-guard-battering skills in a demonstration of acrobatics that's giving me flashbacks to Bungie's Oni. Check out those skills and absorb some lovely neon futurescapes in the debut video and screenshots below. This one's due out May next year.
