There's always been much to like about Age of Wonders, a fantastical fusion of strategy and tactics last seen back in 2002's Shadow Magic. But really, it doesn't get better than the penguins. Dire penguins, to be exact. Dedicated to evil, and summonable to join the armies of goblins and dragons and elves and magic. "These were no men," declares the in-game tome. "They were far more deadly. They were killer penguins." If this game had brought us nothing more than that quote, the wait would have been well worth it. Lucky for us, it did. A lot more.

Billed as an MMO for racing fans, The Crew lets you and friends get together for illegal street races and other such high-speed shenanigans across a photorealistic, open-world representation of the continental United States.

Spaghetti Western brawler Secret Ponchos coming to PC

Secret Ponchos is a spaghetti western fighting game set in some amazing alternate universe where Once Upon a Time in Mexico was a graphic novel by Frank Miller. It’s fast-paced and looks like a lot of fun, but up until recently it was presumed to be exclusive to the PS4. Not so, according to developer Switchblade Monkeys yesterday: Secret Ponchos is headed to Steam.

Watch Dogs will require Uplay, even on Steam

To no one’s surprise, Watch Dogs will require us to use Uplay even if we buy it through Steam. It’s one of Ubisoft’s biggest games of the year, and the company isn't about to set aside its Steam competitor, despite releasing it on Steam. If you want to play Watch Dogs on PC, there’s no way around it.


Logitech announces G502 gaming mouse with 12,000 DPI sensor

Logitech has a new gaming mouse, and that gaming mouse has an edgy name to go with its ridiculous new 12,000 DPI sensor: Proteus Core. Logitech's G502 Proteus Core is the successor to the G500s, which is just a year old. Logitech calls the 12,000 DPI sensor "the world's most powerful and accurate sensor" and say it's a brand new design that no other mouse on the market has.

The DPI race doesn't say much about sensor quality—most gamers use a DPI setting in the low thousands, and no one can realistically control a mouse at 1200 DPI—but Logitech claims the sensor has "zero acceleration, zero smoothing or filtering, and zero pixel rounding." Those are all magic words to hardcore gamers worried about mouse acceleration throwing off their aim. The Proteus Core's big new feature is the ability to calibrate the sensor on different surfaces to optimize tracking and lift-off distance


Battlefield 4 update adds loadout presets to Battlelog

Up until today, swapping out weapons and equipment in the thick of a Battlefield 4 match wasn't easy. Sifting through piles of unlocks lengthened spawn times and hampered momentum for players on a roll (well, that and occasional teleporting soldiers), but a fresh Battlelog update hopes to simplify inventory management with the addition of preset loadouts for the game's four kits.


The Wolf Among Us Episode Three review

This review references the events of episodes one and two. I've been careful not to reveal any major plot points from episode three, but some details may be inferred.

Most game characters are vessels for the player to pour input into, but Telltale is at its finest when it reaches out and pours its characters' dilemmas back into us. In my favorite moments of its branching stories, the protagonist's conflicting motives become my conflicting motives—I don't enter the correct input to decide what happens next, I struggle to do what's right and live with the fallout. After a disappointing second episode, The Wolf Among Us nails this design in the third.

We've been anxiously awaiting the PC port for Dark Souls 2 ever since the game was first announced, when developer From Software promised better graphics support and higher resolution textures. Now that the Facebook buyout story is yesterday’s chip paper, everyone has stopped talking about Oculus Rift. Not me, though. The headset is a permanent fixture on my desk, and I’m always keeping my eye on sites like RiftEnabled and Oculus VR Share for new demos to try. It’s a minefield, though. The open nature of the hardware means there’s a lot of crap out there in Rift land, but it’s amazing that most of the good ones I feature in The Rift Report are made by one person in their spare. Imagine what a team of 100 developers with a blockbuster budget could do.

Wolfenstein: The New Order trailer leaves you nowhere to run

In what must be the most incongruously violent use of Martha and the Vandellas since The Warriors, the latest Wolfenstein trailer is giving B.J. Blazkowicz "nowhere to run". (See also: "nowhere to hide"). That's because the entire world is now ruled by Nazis—something the game's non-Nazis are none too happy about. Cue explosions, violence, extreme refereeing, and a gun that disintegrates people into blood mist.

If you've closed the book—okay, technically browser—on your Card Hunter campaign, developers Blue Manchu hope to tempt you back with a new chapter. Attack of the Artifacts will be the first expansion for the free-to-play tactical-turn-based-card-battling-board-game. Due out later this month, it'll upgrade the game with new adventures, cards, weapons and monsters.

Ahhhh, the music! For all Hotline Miami's poking and prodding of its players' moral core, it was the first game's faux-80s Drive-a-like soundtrack that propelled me through wanton violence and gore. Graphics don't matter, right? It's all about design, singularity of vision, and the ability to craft a believable world from a consistent aesthetic. On the other hand, ew, look at all those angular models and aliased textures! Gross. While the design concepts and wild ideas can be paradoxically refreshing, it would be nice to have prettier worlds and more responsive controls.

Step forward Outcast Reboot HD, a Kickstarter project to high-def-ify Outcast. For $600,000, the game's original creative directors will lead 1999's excellent open-world action-adventure into the modern age.


Resident Evil 4 HD update fixes framerate drops, Capcom tackling other community issues

A new patch for classic action game Resident Evil 4 HD arrived late last week, bringing with it a handful of tweaks and bug fixes. It’s nothing groundbreaking, but what is encouraging is that this RE4's fifth update in as many weeks. Updates seem to be scheduled for every Friday for the foreseeable future, a schedule that shows Capcom is absolutely serious about supporting this PC port. As the grumpy survivors of too many terrible PC ports, this is a commitment we'd like to celebrate.
