Mordheim: City of the Damned brings turn-based strategy to a doomed city

Tom Senior at

This passed me by somehow, but it's still worth a mention. There's going to be a Mordheim game! Mordheim is one of Games Workshop's more obscure Warhammer Fantasy spin-off projects. It's a turn-based strategy game set in a city obliterated by a magic meteorite. Precious fragments of said meteorite, called Wyrdstone, have drawn bandits and adventurers from every corner of the world. Giant rat-men face off against heroes of the empire, Elves, pirates, mercenaries, Witch Hunters and chaos demons. It's like the end of the Hobbit, except the armies are 1000 times smaller, and prone to incurring terrible injuries and mounting psychological damage from battle to battle.

Warhammer 40,000: Storm of Vengeance beta hits Steam

Emanuel Maiberg at

In the year 40,000, our universe is ravaged by war. Bloody battles between humans and xenos rage on endlessly, entire planets are annihilated regularly, and Space Marines, more machine than human, know only death and war. Games Workshop’s Warhammer 40,000 has just about the most epic, metal-album-cover fiction that ever existed, and it’s a great source material for video games.

Warhammer 40K MOBA Storm of Vengeance announced

Emanuel Maiberg at

British developer Eutechnyx  today announced that it’s currently working on Storm of Vengeance, a MOBA set in Games Workshop’s Warhammer 40,000 universe. Slated for a 2014 release on PC and mobile devices, Eutechnyx describes Storm of Vengeance as a “lane strategy game” set in the dark, gothic, but not-at-all emo universe of Warhammer 40,000.

Blood Bowl 2 screenshots introduce humanity's Reikland Reavers

Phil Savage at

There is only war. Except, sometimes there's sport. But when it comes to Games Workshop's single-minded Warhammer franchise, even that is basically just war. Cyanide Studios are working on a follow up to Blood Bowl, their turn-based fantasy football game. Now they've released the first screenshots Blood Bowl 2, confirming that it will take place in a rudimentary bowl and that, if the number of spikes on that ball are anything to go by, there will soon be blood.

Warhammer Online to shut down this December

Phil Savage at

I'm pretty surprised by the news that Warhammer Online is scheduled for closure. Mostly that's because I'd largely forgotten about it. Er, whoops, that can't have helped matters. Mythic's fantasy MMO had been quietly existing in the background, after a promising 2008 launch, and a subsequent and continual decline in subscribers. Now, it's due to end this December, with its creators citing the end of their licensing deal with Games Workshop.

Space Hulk: Deathwing announced; is a first-person shooter

Phil Savage at

The floodgates have opened, and Warhammer licences are swarming through the industry like Tyranids. We've already breached one Space Hulk, but now another has been sighted on the long-range scanners. Space Hulk: Deathwing has just just been announced; turning the tactical board game experience into an Unreal Engine 4-based first-person shooter from the makers of the bizarre and impenetrable E.Y.E: Divine Cybermancy. Weird, right? Maybe the announcement teaser vid can clarify a few things.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Wolf announced, is a turn-based collectible card game

Phil Savage at

There was a time when getting a license out of Games Workshop was harder then getting a Chaos Marine out of his armour. Now they're distributing them more liberally; and plenty of chapters are being given the chance to prove their devotion to the Emperor. Space Wolf is the latest Warhammer 40K game to be announced: a PC and iOS collectible card game from mobile developer Herocraft.

Space Hulk secures August 15th release date

Tom Sykes at

Space Hulk - not to be confused with the time Bruce Banner visited the International Space Station - is coming. It's coming real soon, as in August 15th. We were rather impressed by Full Control's board game adaption when we saw it a few months ago, not least because it's shaping up to be one of the most authentic Warhammer 40K tie-ins yet. Stick around for a very short new trailer, which mainly involves things exploding into chunks.

What we want to see from the Creative Assembly Warhammer game

Tom Senior at

We learned recently that the creators of Total War, The Creative Assembly, have scooped Games Workshop's Warhammer fantasy license. This is tip-top news. Warhammer is all about massive battles, Creative Assembly are really, really good at massive battles. It's a great match.

CA have set up a new develop team to produce games for the "multi-title" deal, but what would such a series look like? We're rather fond of Games Workshop's game of little fantasy men doing dice-war on tabletops, so we've rounded up a few features we'd love to see from an proper, epic Warhammer fantasy videogame.

New Space Hulk game announced - trailer within

Marsh Davies at

Games Workshop have announced a new Space Hulk game. Built by developer Full Control, it'll be a turnbased strategy game designed to closely mimic the action of the boardgame itself, in which a team of heavily armoured Space Marines stomp through the infested carcass of an immense spaceship, ripping its chitinous inhabitants to shreds with mighty bolters or otherwise meeting a grisly fate themselves.

There's a teaser trailer within, but it's about as disappointingly scant on detail as any teaser trailer has ever been. However, a bullet-point list on the game's site reveals a few more exciting tidbits: there's cross-platform multiplayer with the Mac and iOS versions, a new co-op campaign against the Genestealer AI and a level editor.

Warhammer Online: Wrath of Heroes showcases two heroes in new spotlights

Gavin Townsley at

I love a good three way, especially when there are Goblins and Orcs involved. Warhammer Online: Wrath of Heroes has just released trailers detailing two of our favorite heroes found in this three-team based, action orgy. I tend to lean more towards the support roll of the little goblin, Glowgob. If introducing someone's face to an axe sounds more your style, check out the orc warrior, Bax. Those who need a break from Grandma's cheek pinching should look into the Thanksgiving beta event starting November 23th. Want more info? Visit their website and read on to see our impressions of Glowgob and Bax.

Dawn of War 2: Retribution's multiplayer generals profiled

The new general units for each race in Dawn of War 2: Retribution's single player campaigns will also feature in multiplayer mode. Relic have revealed some of the special abilities that will be available to the Tyranid Swarmlord and the Eldar Autarch.

Ogres and Elves line up for Blood Bowl

Jaz McDougall at

Two new races are confirmed for Blood Bowl: Legendary Edition, the updated version of the fantasy american football game by Cyanide, based on the game designed by Games Workshop. The first, the Elves, are like Wood Elves who aren't too fussed about wood. The second race, the Ogres, are presumably less interested in the ball and more interested in murder.

Blood Bowl: Legendary Edition is pencilled in for a release at the end of this year. It'll include twelve new races - that's more than the original game came with - and lots of rule tweaking. We'll have more info closer to release.
