By now, we're completely familiar with the basics of crafting games. You hit a tree until it becomes tree parts, then use the tree parts to build wooden things. You smash a rock until it becomes ore, then smelt the ore to build metal things. You meet a half-naked guy named Batman, and he follows you around for ten minutes eerily moaning, "Take me to your house. Show me your house. Show me your houuuuuse." Actually, that last part might not be common to crafting games. But Batman's weirdness is not that unusual in Rust, the early-access crafting survival game from Facepunch Studios.


World of Warcraft level 90 boost now available for $60

Blizzard announced you can now purchase a level 90 character boost in World of Warcraft for $60, confirming the price that leaked out last month. It’s the same boost you’ll get with a purchase of the latest World of Warcraft expansion, Warlords of Draenor, which Blizzard will sell for $50 (Standard Edition) or $70 (Digital Deluxe Edition).

With Titanfall jettisoning the idea of a traditional single-player mode and Battlefield 4’s campaign inducing widespread sighs, this has become a disposable bolt on to most of today’s big shooters. Titanfall is able to create much of the drama of a single-player game in the midst of its impressive systems, but it’s worth remembering that the old Infinity Ward were really good at making campaigns, too.

Two robots. Two planets. Can't the robots just have one planet each? NO. This is Planetary Annihilation, an RTS from some of the brains behind Supreme Commander's large-scale robotic RTS battles. The plot is simple: once upon a time someone set all the robots to "kill", and the robots have been killing everything ever since, pausing only to build smaller robots that can kill more effectively. Unlike Supreme Commander, Planetary Annihilation has robots fighting for orbital supremacy as well as on land, air and sea.

Planetary Annihilation has recently entered the ominous "gamma" phase of its pre-release program. What does that mean, exactly? Let's find out, by making huge robot armies fight each other to death.

FRACT arrives this April on Steam, GOG and the Humble Store

FRACT is so laser targeted to my tastes that I'm breaking all my natural instincts and respecting its desire for all-caps naming. It's a musical exploration game, which is a description that, had it been available to buy right now, would have me already entering my purchase details. I've been scuppered by the fact that it's not available to buy right now, but - as was recently announced by its developers - it will be soon, with the game planned for an April release. You can get a small slice of its moody abstract atmosphere through the game's new bass-heavy teaser.


Star Citizen tops $40 million in funding, opens up two new star systems

Star Citizen—the in-progress space sim and dream generator—has surpassed $40 million in funding, according to the latest update from game lead Chris Roberts. While the new monies are set to boost the scale of its universe with the addition of two new star systems, the new update also reveals the level of fresh support Star Citizen has achieved in terms of its community population. Roberts writes that more than 10,000 people have joined its community since the end of February.

A HD rendition of a classic game can introduce new audiences to missing links in gaming's evolutionary chain. Resident Evil 4 is one such link, a brave rethink of Resident Evil's original formula that retained the horror, the bosses, and Umbrella's carefully alphabetised viruses, but moved the series in a livelier, gorier direction. Resident Evil 4 HD finally has finally given us a worthy PC edition, as you'll discover in our review, but we wanted to talk a bit about why it's so good, and why it matters. Godus receives a "substantial" update; now features less clicking, more dragging

I haven't played Godus, but its early alpha reviews gave the impression of a title that was more carpal tunnel roulette than game. Today, the 22 Cans team are hoping to address those criticisms with a new "Beta V2.0" update that, they say, "substantially" changes the feel of the game. Peter Molyneux runs people through the update in a new video, explaining big added features like mouse-drag.


Nvidia 800M series steals world's fastest notebook GPU crown from Nvidia, says Nvidia

Good news from Nvidia for fans of warm thighs on long trips. From today the graphics card behemoth is planning a renewed assault on the gaming notebook market with its forthcoming range of GeForce GTX 800M GPUs, with extended battery life billed as a key feature alongside the (expected) annual performance improvements. PC Gamer recently attended a launch briefing for the 800M series, of which the most powerful variant is the 880M (pictured) which Nvidia claims is the world’s fastest notebook GPU. You can expect the chips to begin appearing in notebooks immediately, and among those to include the 880M at launch are the Alienware 17, Asus G750JZ and MSI GT 70.

We’ve seen Microsoft teasing the GDC announcement of the latest installment in their popular DirectX series — subtitled "A Storm of Low-Level Hardware Interaction" — and now it seems the open source brigade are countering this new Microsoft offensive. Valve have freely released a software layer, ToGL, which will translate Direct3D calls to OpenGL.


Wildstar release date announced, will go live this Summer

Barbecues? Picnics? Eating your own body weight in ice cream? You may want to clear it all from your Summer schedule. If Wildstar turns out to be the next big MMO, the warmest months will instead be spent sitting in a dark room, illuminated by the colourful glow of its cartoon world. Developers Carbine Studios have today announced that the game will release all around the world on June 3rd. Well, it's not like anyone really needs vitamin D.


Titanfall's PC servers experiencing "unexpected downtime" [Updated]

Update: According to EA, the Titanfall downtime is now resolved.

Original: Titanfall hasn't finished its worldwide roll-out yet - although there are ways to get around that issue. Even with a staggered launch in place, it's popularity is seemingly too much for the game's servers. EA have released a service update, stating that users may experience connection problems that would prevent them from playing the multiplayer mech shooter.

Dark Souls 2 launch trailer appears well ahead of the PC release

Oh Dark Souls, you perpetual tease. Namco Bandai have unleashed the Dark Souls 2 launch trailer, which makes sense, because the console release is this week. For those of us wanting to play the game on PC, its brutal delights will be hidden away until the end of next month. Hopefully we can make it through those extra weeks without devolving into maddened undead husks.

As for the trailer itself, it's also a bit of a tease. It's entirely CGI, which, on the one hand, is a bit of a strange move for a launch trailer; but on the other, means that you'll be relatively safe from spoilers.


Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls trailer shows the might of the Crusader

I'm going to do an impression of the first minute of this Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls trailer. "Lore lore lore lore, Zakarum faith, lore lore." After the somewhat underwhelming opener, though, we finally get to the good stuff: an ability round-up of the expansion's new Crusader class. He's a tanking kind of character, with a taunt ability that will draw enemies' ire. That doesn't mean there's not plenty of power behind his mace-swinging arm.


Crytek to show off CryEngine Linux support at GDC

Can it run Crysis? If you’re using Linux, the answer will eventually be “yes.” The German developer behind the first Far Cry and the Crysis games announced that it will show off its impressive CryEngine running natively on Linux for the first time during GDC.


Hearthstone leaves open beta, full release now available

Just a few days after Blizzard prophesized the impending end of Hearthstone's beta, it's decided to surprise everyone by releasing the Warcraft-ified online card battler after three months of testing. We don’t usually report on industry hires, but Binstock was one of the lead engineers at Valve behind the “VR room” we heard so much about during the company’s Steam Dev Days event.


Hawken on Steam: examining the state of the game after two years of new mechs and balance changes

Ever since its open beta began in December 2012, Hawken's basics have been easy to pick up. Big, stompy robots shoot and scoot with agile dodges. The modes are a slice from the same shooter pie everyone's familiar with, and it's a snap to load up and jump into a team deathmatch in less than a minute. Maps paint worlds of well-worn neon-lit cityscapes and desolate badlands. Hawken is like the mohawked, studded-jacket-wearing punk brother of MechWarrior Online: a youngster with a brash streak, but definitely its own brand of cool.

Hawken's also growing up. It transitioned to Steam last month, moving away from a dedicated launcher and enticing new recruits with an Early Access initiative and a couple purchasable bonus packages. Now it's once again fully Free to Play. Two years of patches and adjustments have streamlined Hawken and stripped away unused features, making it easier to get into than ever. After two weeks of playing Hawken on Steam, I'm still skeptical of its F2P monetization, but faster-paced combat reminiscent of Quake and new mech classes kept me coming back for more.
