DICE announced today that it will finally begin rolling out Battlefield 4’s Platoons feature on February 27. Similar to the feature in Battlefield 3, BF4's platoons will allow you to create (if you have a high enough rank) or join clans of up to 100 members, and coordinate battles for you and your teammates.
Last year, Blizzard announced that World of Warcraft players who buy the Warlords of Draenor expansion could boost one character to level 90 for free, and that it would sell further boosts for an undisclosed amount. Last week, as patch 5.4.7 went live in North America, players saw the service in the in-game store for $60. Blizzard hasn't confirmed that this is the final price, but today said it doesn't want to “devalue the accomplishment of leveling.”
If you plan on playing Titanfall on a laptop or want to install it on a solid state hard drive, you might need to prepare in advance for the game’s March 11 release date. Responding to a question from a fan, Respawn Entertainment’s Vince Zampella said on Twitter that the PC version of Titanfall’s will be a 21 gigabyte download, and will take up a whopping 48 gigabyte when installed.
New indie shooter Tower of Guns looks like it's custom made for the time-crunched, over-scheduled gamer. The FPS releases March 4 and offers randomized mayhem and challenges the developer Terrible Posture Games says can be accomplished in a single, lunch break-sized sitting. It also has a wonderful and vicious-sounding shotgun rocket launcher which sounds like a perfectly natural way to relax.
Looking out over the vast and metaphorical landscape of 2014, vast craters have scarred the Earth. These all-consuming acres of destruction represent the RPGs that will be unleashed upon our spare time. Whether it's Pillars of Eternity, Dragon Age: Inquisition, Wasteland 2 or The Witcher 3, there are long, winding and morally flexible roads expanding out in every direction. Before you try to unravel this sprawling adventure, pay heed to another RPG that's soon to emerge from the depths of PC development. Piranha Bytes have officially unveiled Risen 3: Titan Lords.
Here's a strangely refreshing consequence of Kickstarter's success. If Wasteland 2 had been a publisher-led project, its trailer would likely be a showy affair full of isometric drama, tension and violence. Here, though, that isn't the case. While the trailer InXile have produced does contain some violence, it also features an extended sequence in which someone picks their team's skills. And if that's got your heart racing, you'd better prepare yourself for the unedited inventory management.
We've managed to sneak into the £200 Elite: Dangerous alpha, which supports flight sticks and the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset, both of which we have in our office. We took it in turns to stick our heads into the virtual reality cockpit, ooh-ing and ah-ing and occasionally swearing as we collided with a space rock and span off into the void. Lion's Arch has had a hard week. Since its destruction as part of Guild Wars 2's Escape from Lion's Arch update, the game's capital city has been beset by baddies, filled with a toxic miasma, and periodically populated by players on a map-wide hunt for civilian survivors. The next update, Battle for Lion's Arch, will encourage those players to take the offensive. A teaser trailer released by ArenaNet sets up the assault, and hints at what they're calling "the final battle".
Square Enix have announced that mobile game Deus Ex: The Fall is being re-released on Steam in a new and reworked PC edition, to be released on March 25th. Did anyone ask for this? Probably, because The Fall was supposedly a competent if somewhat unremarkable extension of the atmosphere and ideas of Human Revolution. As you'd hope from a PC port, the game has been augmented to support keyboard, mouse and controller. The mobile version's in-app purchase options have also been removed.
It's not quite Reaper of Souls - the Diablo 3 expansion that's bringing Act V and Adventure Mode - but the unassumingly named patch 2.0.1 will still significantly change the game. There's a revamped Paragon system, clan and community features, and the big Loot 2.0 - which paves the way for the Auction House's destruction. And while the expansion is still a month away, Blizzard plan to equip patch 2.0.1 later today.
My favourite thing about the big Games for Windows Live shutdown is that it was never officially confirmed. While originally announced via a message on the Age of Empires Online support page, that update was quickly removed. Since then, the Age of Empires Online support page has also been removed, as part of Microsoft's apparent attempt to hide all evidence that PC gaming even exists. As far as I can see, this is all that remains of Microsoft's non-Windows 8 support.
At least that feeling is mutual, with PC games trying to hide all existence of Games for Windows Live. A further official confirmation of the July 1st switch off date seems almost unnecessary, especially given that many GfWL games are switching over to Steamworks. The latest to do so is Ace Combat: Assault Horizon. Its developers recently announced that owners can manually activate a patch to remove the unwanted client.

At the outset of this sequel I awake from a thousand-year slumber in a future-Gothic London, stripped of most of my powers – but within a couple of hours of play I’m back up to full strength. I’m the prince of darkness, so why am I spending so much of my time cowering in it, disguised as a rat?
The game’s setup gives its Spanish developers MercurySteam a level of creative freedom unprecedented in Castlevania, a series which has spent 25 years casting players as the guy hunting Dracula, not playing him. It has been set in Gothic fantasy worlds, not grounded in reality. As a concept, Lords of Shadow 2 is full of potential. MercurySteam spend most of its 20-hour runtime squandering the lot.

Board game publisher Cryptozoic announced that it is making a board game based on Portal. The tentatively titled Portal: Uncooperative Cake Acquisition Game is set for a release in the third quarter of 2014. Its suggested retail price is currently set around $50. A portal gun that defies the laws of physics is not included.
To celebrate three decades of improbable hilarity, the BBC is re-releasing the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy text adventure game. The thirtieth anniversary edition will be playable in-browser and will feature improved HD visuals and some social media integration. The game will relaunch on the same day that the BBC will rebroadcast the original radio plays written by Douglas Adams, which turn 36 years old that same day. I'll wait just a moment while you reflect on how extremely old you are.
Davis is becoming a problem. The sandy-haired survivor has been whining at me to finish building the chain-link fence around our stronghold, an abandoned elementary school. To me, the fence is old-hat, low priority. “Relax,” I think, “The fence can wait for another day. The four of us are about to finish rebuilding the old well out back, and then we can ride out this whole zombie apocalypse business with fresh, clean water on tap.”
Grim Fandango is one of the best adventure games ever made—an epic journey through a world that meshes Casablanca with Día de Muertos, as brilliantly imagined by Tim Schafer. First released in 1998, it was just about the peak of storytelling in the genre, but it always had one huge problem: the controls. But a new mod may solve those problems, changing the game's controls from keyboard-based "tank" movements to a point-and-click interface.
Diablo 3 historians will probably mark the time after patch 2.0.1's sweeping changes as "post 2.0.1." The upcoming update's major systems revamp—such as the removal of the real-money and gold auction houses, scaling difficulty, and the implementation of clans—marks a divide between the old (and dubiously designed) Diablo and a new Diablo far more in tune with what players want. Its end-game Paragon system will get a complete rework as well, and in an official blog post, Blizzard explains how the new system will work in Reaper of Souls.
Earlier this month, Double Fine kicked off Amnesia Fortnight 2014, an event in which you can vote on what prototypes the developer will work on and eventually release as a full game. Fans voted Mnemonic into the prototype phase as well as two of our picks: Steed and Dear Leader. Tragically, Patrick Hackett’s pitch for Bad Golf 2 didn’t make the cut, but that won't stop Double Fine fans, who decided to develop the game themselves.
Action RPG series Sacred's third installment will hit PCs this summer, according to a recent announcement from publisher Deep Silver. A suitably cinematic trailer has also surfaced, giving us a glimpse of the hero characters we'll be seeing in the new game. There's also a crumbly bridge, magic wings, and a slobbering armored troll-monster.
