It's not quite ready for prime time yet, but The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth now has a launch date that's not too far down the road. A "release date trailer" has also made its way to the tubes, and I'm not exaggerating when I say that it can generously be described as quite possibly the weirdest thing you'll see all day.
Team Meat, the two-man studio behind the indie hit Super Meat Boy, is apparently working on something entirely new called A Voyeur For September. You can ask me what it is, but I will tell you only this: It is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside a trailer.
Binding of Isaac creator Edmund McMillen has answered a huge selection of questions surrounding his and Nicalis's remake project Binding of Isaac: Rebirth. Taking the form of a Q&A between McMillen and a (hopefully fictional) foul-mouthed and belligerent question-asker, he reveals how the game will contain double the content of the original, how the developers are planning to add shared seeds, and how - typically - it will be "done when it's done".
Following its official announcement in a Gamasutra post-mortem, Binding of Isaac creator Edmund McMillen has provided details of the upcoming remake in an FAQ posted to his blog. Titled Rebirth, it's billed as a "totally remade game based on the flash version of the Binding of Isaac + Wrath of the Lamb."
In an announcement that seems to have broken their site, Team Meat have revealed their next project: a randomly generated game about cats called, brilliantly/awfully, Mew-Genics. Random generation + cats - why did no one think of this before?
"Who would have thought a game about an abused child fighting off his mother with his tears could ever sell 700k copies in less than a year? Not me, that's for ****ing sure."
So begins an e-mail that Binding of Isaac co-creator Edmund McMillen sent us this morning. The popularity of the Wrath of the Lamb DLC has helped his weeping foetus roguelike rack up an incredible number of sales - but its launch, McMillen says, could have gone better.
Boys in their bedrooms, drop-out dreamers, shut-in gore fetishists - if ever a film were to quash the red-top stereotypes of game developers than this would surely be it. Indie Game: The Movie follows four of the most thoughtful, hard-working and sensitive young fellows you could probably find in this business or any other, and is both a clarion call for the thrilling creative freedom of independent development and a grim warning of its near-lethal stakes.
The first, and according to creator Edmund McMillen, only DLC for Binding of Issac will release May 28th on Steam for $3. The expansion was first mentioned in January, but Team Meat made the official announcement on Twitter last month, claiming that Wrath of the Lamb will feature "50% more content," or as the new trailer puts it, "tons more cool stuff." Cool stuff is good, $3 is cheap (and that's good), and Binding of Isaac is good -- good stuff all around!
Or at least, it's as officially "announced" as an indie game can get. Brilliant madman Edmund McMillen's been gradually revealing gore-spattered bits and pieces via Twitter, allowing a few particularly interesting tidbits to slip out. Foremost, the expansion will increase the total item count to 205 (up from 131) - thanks in part to a new "trinket" item category that grants passive bonuses. Also, it'll go for a mere $3 when it's ready for primetime. Sadly, there's no release date beyond "when it's done" at the moment, but there are worse fates. For instance, being chased into a monster-packed death dungeon by your crazed mother. So that's... comforting? Well, I tried, anyway.
You are Isaac, a naked little boy cast into the network of cellars under his house after God commands his mother to kill him. Unlike in the Bible, no stay of execution awaits you: only level after level of top-down, randomly generated dungeon, populated by Isaac’s monstrous former siblings.
You move and shoot in four directions, like a weeping, terrified Robotron, and at the end of each level is a boss. Along the way, if you’re lucky, you’ll find upgrades that make the going a little easier. Die, however, and it’s all lost: this is a roguelike of a traditional sort, the kind that’s far more about failure than it is about success.
The Binding of Isaac was already quite evil. You play as a naked child fleeing for his life through a monster-infested basement to escape his mother, who has been commanded by god to slay Isaac as proof of her faith. Indiegames note that after the free Halloween update, you will be able to fight three new bosses, four new enemies and collect more than 20 new items if you successfully slay your mother ten times. The update also adds a new playable character, another ending, more achievements, more music, tarot cards and MORE EVIL.
