Dark Souls 2: Crown of the Old Iron King DLC review

Cory Banks at

The first add-on for Dark Souls 2 restored some of the original Dark Souls’ legendary difficulty, but The Crown of the Old Iron King, part two of From Software’s trilogy of DLC, doesn’t follow suit. Instead, it evokes the sad, forgotten, wistful feeling I got in the first game’s world. It’s built to be explored, with lots of optional areas that branch off the DLC’s main path, and that comes at the cost of difficulty.

Andy Chalk at

The upcoming Watch Dogs DLC Bad Blood will put players in the shoes of T-Bone Grady, the legendary hacker and trusted companion of Aiden Pearce, who risks his safety to help out an old friend but soon realizes that there's more to his story than meets the eye.

Wargame: Red Dragon gets free DLC, adds "full-length story campaign" set in the early 90s

Tom Sykes at

Wargame: Red Dragon is set in an alternate 1980s where everyone's a bit more warry and Twin Peaks was probably never invented. It sounds, obviously, like a bit of a horrible place, but one ripe for real-time strategy gaming. Eugen Systems clearly agree, as they've just expanded their wargame with a new, free chunk of downloadable content. The Second Korean War updates the action to 1992, adding "12 new units and an additional full-length story campaign".

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel season pass and preorder bonus revealed

Andy Chalk at

Gearbox has announced, to nobody's great surprise, that it plans to release four DLC packs for its upcoming shooter Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. You will no doubt be just as shocked, which is to say not shocked at all, to learn that all four packs will be available collectively in a discounted Season Pass, and further, that if you preorder the game, you'll get some free bonus content.

Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor includes "exclusive" Orc Warband mission

Andy Chalk at

Like many triple-A games these days, Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor will offer fans a "season pass," providing access to a future DLC releases at a discounted price. Among the coming content is a mission that will let players step into the ghostly boots of Cerebrimbor and an "exclusive" face-off against Sauron's best troops.

CoD: Ghosts trailer details Nemesis map pack, includes mine carts and smallest-ever CoD map

Tom Sykes at

It's strange to hear developers boast about how small the maps in their newest map pack are, but I hear just that in this trailer for CoD: Ghosts' final piece of DLC, Nemesis. This adds some "small-to-medium"-sized maps based around the themes 'mine cart level', 'wintry submarine base' and 'please desecrate this lovely Chinese village', along with a remake of the "smallest map ever made for Call of Duty": Shipment (now called Showtime). This one's a futuristic, Smash TV-style game show, replete with a cheesy announcer commentating on the killy goings-on. The DLC also adds the final bit to the game's full-on sci-fi Extinction mode. Exodus will see you coming face-to-elongated-face with the Ancestors, ie XCOM-ish psionic aliens. The trailer is below.

Ubisoft teases a new city for Watch Dogs DLC, says it's coming this fall

Andy Chalk at

It looks like Watch Dogs may leave the Windy City behind when its first DLC release comes out this fall. The official Twitter account recently teased a move to the green fields and blue skies of Camden, New Jersey, and then confirmed that new content is on the way.

Red Hood joins Batman: Arkham Knight as GameStop-exclusive preorder bonus DLC

Andy Chalk at

GameStop has confirmed that the Red Hood will be offered as exclusive pre-order DLC for the upcoming Batman: Arkham Knight. This in itself is not surprising—GameStop teased the announcement yesterday with a pixelated but clearly red-capped image on Twitter—but it might just offer a hint about the true identity of the mysterious Arkham Knight.

Dark Souls 2: Crown of the Sunken King DLC review

Cory Banks at

The biggest criticism leveled at Dark Souls 2 was that it was too easy. Players who had spent hundreds of hours in the first game found that many of the same tactics worked in the sequel. Maybe you had to dodge left instead of right to get past the Pursuer’s sweeping arc, but generally speaking, the old tricks still worked.

I thought about this as I died—again—while playing Crown of the Sunken King, the first part of From Software’s three-piece downloadable content set. My old tricks failed time and time again, forcing me to relearn enemy patterns and try new tactics. For Dark Souls diehards, that’s a good thing, though you’ll have to slog through some drab environments.

Dark Souls 2 patch 1.08 removes health items during PvP

Shaun Prescott at

A massive Dark Souls 2 patch has just gone live, and along with a long list of changes and refinements comes the news that “Health Recovery Items can no longer be used during any PvP”. What this basically means is that you can’t chug Estus mid duel, which is a change the Dark Souls 2 community has been requesting for a long time. After all, a duel should be an honorable fight to the death, right? Right.

How to access Dark Souls 2's new DLC in-game

PC Gamer at

If we’ve learned anything from our time in Dark Souls 2, it’s that the game doesn’t hold your hand for anything. Its first DLC, Crown of the Sunken King, is no exception. Unlike Borderlands 2 or Fallout: New Vegas, where installing new addons immediately give you a new quest and a map marker, Crown of the Sunken King simply puts a mysterious item in your inventory and leaves you with a cryptic clue. If you're stumped on what the new item means, or how to get into your newest challenge, we can help.

Titanfall 'Dig Site' map to feature in Frontier's Edge pack; screenshots and details released

Shaun Prescott at

In much the same way they did with the Expedition DLC pack, Respawn is drip feeding details on the second Titanfall map add-on. Entitled Frontier's Edge, the three maps will feature 'Dig Site' among them, which Respawn has detailed in a new blogpost.

Battlefield 4 Dragon's Teeth trailer is 30 seconds of compressed explosive action

Tom Sykes at

This trailer for Battlefield 4's forthcoming Dragon's Teeth DLC might only be 30 seconds long, but only around 10 of those seconds have been wasted showing logos or release dates—the rest is riddled with gunfire and explosions and a bit where a train carriage is knocked clean off a track. (Yes, there is a small explosion resulting from that.) Also pictured: the ballistic shields that will be added in the content pack, along with liberal use of speedboats and quad bikes.

Alien: Isolation pre-order bonuses include DLC levels based on original film

Tom Sykes at

Alien: Isolation was always essentially Alien: The Video Game in my mind, with its slavish reproduction of that film's technology, its sets, and the pre-Cameronised alien that hadn't yet been robbed of its near-indestructibility in the 1986 sequel. The news that Creative Assembly and Sega have gone full Alien and announced two bonus missions based on the original movie, and featuring the original cast, should make me very happy indeed—but it's been handled in just about the worst possible way. Those two missions—Crew Expendable and Last Survivor, detailed below—have been earmarked as pre-order DLC. You'll get the first one along with some other stuff simply by pre-ordering the game, but to get both you'll need to pre-order from "select retailers", which haven't been announced yet.

Ubisoft VP Chris Early says resistance to DLC is in decline

Andy Chalk at

The Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag "Time Saver" packs aren't expensive—$1 for the Collectibles Pack and $2 for the Resources Pack—but it's the principle of the thing that's so outrageous, at least among those who remember that cheat codes used to be free. Yet according to Ubisoft Vice President of Digital Publishing Chris Early, there was no outrage. "There was no resistance," he told GamesIndustry. "Maybe there were 12 guys somewhere who said something, but whatever. As a whole, there wasn't a problem."

Soviet off-road vehicle sim Spintires sells 100,000 copies

Shaun Prescott at

Here's a heartwarming tale: as of now, 100,000 people have enjoyed the unique pleasures of driving Soviet trucks through inhospitable terrain. That's because Spintires, the Kickstarter-funded truck driving simulator, has managed to sell an impressive 100,000 copies. Never before has getting bogged in Siberia been more popular, with the Kickstarter-funded title managing to retain a Steam Top 10 position since its release last month.

Arma 3 karting DLC has raised a lot of money for the Czech Red Cross

Shaun Prescott at

You thought it was funny that Arma 3 now has kart racing, didn’t you? Well pull yourself together, because the April Fools gag-cum-actual feature has managed to raise a million Czech koruna for the country’s Red Cross. That’s nearly US$50 grand.
